I mean holding cells at the station. From my understanding it is a civilian position.

Ham check your info. IE LAPD VNJ (Van Nuys jail) is run by non sworn jailers.

Check with LASD. They have Custody Assistants working in jails and other civilian positions for station jailers also.

Don't know if any are hiring but the big ones in OC would be Anaheim, Santa Ana and Huntington Beach at the city level. Other cities may have a few slots for jailers or police service officers but probably. OCSD has CSA's as well. Check the respective websites.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Custody Assistant is a great job and you can go all over the county. Lots of them also transition later to sworn positions.

San Bernardino County is hiring Sheriff custody assistants which is a civilian position in the jail.

They're called Sheriff's Custody Specialist. The last recruitment was for current County employees. Good paying gig if you live in the IE, tons of OT never a dull moment working West Valley. Still 3-12's. My current dept were hiring part time jailers, not sure if we have the funding for the positions.

True, but do not expect to get this schedule from the beginning. LA County Custody Assistants can, and will be sent wherever there is a need. Downtown, Lynwood (females:puke:) and Wayside.

Shhhhh........you're not supposed to tell them that. :rofl2:

Just as additional info. Anaheim Police Department Jailers are armed and I believe they are sworn. Not sure, but if I was going to be a jailer I'd work there or some other department where they trust you enough to give you a taser and gun even as a jailer and not Police Officer.

I wouldn't count on being armed. Even Deputy Sheriffs are not armed in the jails, let alone a jailer. Some departments do give their jailers CCW privileges, but not LASD.

There is word that LASD is going to make have a huge hiring push in the next 12 months. So if you are interested, right now is the time to apply. Deputy Sheriff, Custody assistant, Security Officer, Security Assistant will all be available and applications are open. Apply now and you may be working in a few short months. Here is the link:

+1 for the above. In addition to the sworn positions, the LASD civilian jobs are great too. A lot of people get their 'foot in the door' as a C/A or S/O and become deputies later.

Now if we will hire more DSG's and promote some more sergeants I can get out of CJ and back in radio car again! I didn't want to go back to jail!!!!! Oh wo is me...LOL

At the moment the county is not actively hiring Custody Assistants, however, they are always accepting applications. At some point, many of the CA's who are attempting to become deputies will get into the academy and switch those green shirts for tan ones. Then the county will began hiring civilian CA's from those applications already turned in. So many people ask "Can I still be a cop if...", but no one will ever be a cop, or CA, if they don't put in that application.

A buddy says LAPD is always accepting applications for Station Officer (jailer) and they hire them on a station by station need.

Well, Anaheim does arm their jailers. I know, I book there. They may not be armed inside the jails, but they do transport and warrant arrest and other stuff on their own. Unlike most county jails or even PD ones for that matter they've got tasers and batons and full duty gear. Its a good idea to arm the jailers in my opinion, just adds to the resources available if crap goes south outside the walls.

That's going to be the exception, not the norm. Like I said, it does happen, but it is very rare.

With the exception of a 3 month stint at Industry under a special program, I did 45 months at CJ from 76-80 and I did go back. I went back as a sgt. in 97 thinking it would stop the back surgeries. Little did I know.:eek:

You went in just before Prop 13, and I was in the first class after. I was supposed to go to Firestone but got bumped from the transfer list and ended up going to Lakewood, which was my 6th choice. Loved it there and wouldn't change it. When I made sergeant, I promoted out of Walnut/San Dimas and went back to Lakewood.

Prop 13 is what killed the 3 month program that allowed me to go to Industry. I was in the last group of deputies that were allowed to do this. The part that sucked was having to return to CJ until I got to leave for real.

We had an Inspector who briefed us at Idt. He told us if 13 passed, a lot of deputies would be laid off. I was worried as I only had 15 months on at the time. It was just a scare tactic to have us vote no, but no one was laid off when it passed.

Ron,

I've taken the attitude of "I will go out when it's my time." Mixed with a little "If the county wants to pay me a ton of money to sit around, and pass out burritos, so be it." ;)

Gnome, it will happen. Just make sure you have done everything you can to prepare yourself. Training is tough, as it should be. As an FTO I had a couple of trainees who did nothing to prepare themselves. The worst two, one almost got me killed and failed training twice. He left the Department the second time and the other quit while on training. Of the others, several became FTOs and have gone on to promising careers.

Ron,

I would like to think I have been preparing for patrol. 34 ride alongs (not done yet), 2 rides with Aero, numerous training courses (CNOA, LA HIDTA, LA CLEAR), and several live fire courses (Black Water, FTA, Gunfighting Inc). I've pumped so much personal time and money into my patrol preperation. It's ridiculous! I've been told it will pay off, and I'm sure it will. It will be all worth it when I'm signed off, and my FTO pins me.

In no way am I saying I am ready, but I am as ready as I will ever be. If that makes sense...

Thank you Retired. Not expecting to make the list, just hoping. In reference to "pinning", I was told that some of the stations will have your TO place the station pin on you, when you have successfully completed your 6 months of patrol training. Sort of a right of passage.

I heard a funny/great story of one of my coworkers who went out to a ghetto station in FOR II. He was in briefing, and all if a sudden, he was told to stand up. Other Deps began grilling him on policy, RD knowledge, and Case Law. He was answering the questons as best as he could, while wondering what he did wrong.

Next thing he knew, his TO stood up, walked over to him, and told him he was being signed off of patrol training. The FTO then placed the station pin on him. An amazing moment for him.

I'm just as guilty :threadjacked: my apologies. I will say my Lt told me he had a meeting with oe of the Asst. Sheriffs, and he said the dept wants to start running back to back academy classes in the new year. I'm not sure about Custody Assistants (Jailers) though. The rumour was, every C/A position in the County was full. If so, not for long. People are always retiring/quiting/being fired.

No at the time that you quoted my post they were hiring SCAs not SCSs, theres a difference. Most of the time you have to start as a SCA then promote to SCS. Theres very little OT at west valley and the rest of the department. The shifts are 12 hours 3days one week 4 days the next.

Same with LASD. Zero paid OT in Custody right now. It's rumoured to be coming back soon (within a month or two). I wish my unit had the 3/12 schedule. We used to, but messed it up for ourselves. Too many people calling in to get 4th or fifth day off. Idiots...

Check out City of South Gate. They have a very large jail of their own because they also have their own courthouse. I applied with them back when I was in the academy, but missed their oral by 3 points. Lots to do there, and they hook for misdemeanors because they have their own jail.

The city has nothing to do with the courthouse. LASD handles all of the court lockups in the county. A couple of years ago the Superior Court converted South Gate Court to civil cases only due to security and budget concerns.

Okay Gentlmen, this just in. Had a briefing yesterday at work. Apparently, LASD is gearing up agin to do some mass hiring. Asst. Sheriff said we are looking to hire 1,100 Deputies. 200 hired thus far. Most are waiting for academy to start. One academy class is about 2 months in.

Nothing specific on Custody Assistants, but we are supposedly going to be hiring for that position as well. No specific numbers though.

However, forget about being a Custody Assistant. Apply for the Deputy Sheriff position. Daddy needs to get to patrol!:D

That's not bad. We lost almost that many the first week. Started with 150, graduated 89. They recycled one guy a week before graduation.

Anyone who is looking for a LE job, custody assistant or deputy, needs to stay on top of this and get their application in ASAP. Who knows how long it will take to fill the list.
