Just wondering, do AK bolts lock to the rear when the mag is empty, something similar to what happens on the AR's?

Only if you have a yugo bolt hold open mag

You can easily modify whatever mags you have to include the bolt hold open feature, you just grind down the stops above the follower with a dremil.

You can buy a BHO on ebay. it gets added to the rifle itself. If you try to put a BHO on the mag itself you cant change mags until you hold the bolt back by hand. ( that is if you have the mag acting as the BHO.
The BHO is sold for 15-20$ Ive seen them on ebay and on forums

There is no bolt hold open feature on an AK receiver. There is the Yugo magazine which has a follower that has a more squared off edge compaired to the typical rounded AK magazine follower. I'd be very interested to learn exactly how well grinding off the little tabs inside the top of the magazine will work considering how the standard follower is rounded. The Tapco plastic magazine follower is squared off and does hold the bolt open after the last shot. http://www.tapco.com/proddesc.aspx?id=2f2755b4-b059-4bdd-adc2-861344c3f340 However, the bolt will close when the empty magazine is removed. This is one more US made part.
There are a few designs that will hold open the bolt, like here: http://www.saiga-12.com/Parts.htm.
There is a safety design like the one at Red Star: http://www.redstararms.com/index.htm?873.htm&1

Oh, almost forgot. The bolt can be held open by pulling the bolt all the way back and then gently letting the bolt hang up on the hammer.

Assuming you are using the Chinese 10 round mags that everyone here seems to be buying for their builds the followers that comes with them have the squared back. By grinding the stops off you allow the follower to come all the way to the top which will catch the bolt after the last round. Personally I dont have any use for the BHO feature since I dont go to public ranges.

Not recommended for the range. You risk the chance of it slamming when a vibration sets it loose while your downrange. The range master is gonna be pissed.
