If You were given a CCW here in CA, and You were asked to pick a handgun or two that You would ACTUALLY carry. What would You pick? And Why?

PS. When I travel to SHALL ISSUE states, I seldom see full size, police duty type pistols being used for CCW. I mostly see short barrel revolvers, compact 1911's, Kahr pistols, single stack Sig's . ETC.

I do have a CCW and carry a PT145. It's a little bulky so I've been looking at the Kahr PM9 or the P380 as a B.U.G. for the winter and E.D.C. for summer...

There's not a chance I would carry any of the blockier guns, or a fullsize of any steel.

I have a ccw and carry a J frame Airweight . Why? because is it the easiest to carry . The J frame fits in my front pocket along with a speed strip and is always with me. I haven't found a semi I like enough to switch out to, but the newer 380s seem really nice .

Glock 27. It will work every time, it is more than small enough to carry in comfort, it has a good magazine capacity for a CCW weapon, .40 S&W is a great defensive round, it was made for the role. Put a G27 in a blade-tech UCH and it can be worn all day long with no problem.

I have three on my CCW

But my choice is the CZ P01

Durable, reliable, 10+1 rounds,

I like the de-cocked double action for carry (no flaming please)

Lots of holster selection

I don't mind holster marks on it, and it would be easily and cheaply replaced

If I had to use it, and it was confiscated.

I also shoot it well, it's accurate, and feels great in my hand.

When in Arizona, I CCW a S&W 638 or a KelTec PF-9. I just wrote a review on both of them as they are new to me.

I used to CCW a Ruger LCP which was really easy, but I personally wasn't confident in the .380 round.

If we ever get CCW here in L.A. county (please don't laugh, I can dream, can't I?) I WILL buy a Smith M&P 9 or 45 compact (probably the 9mm to keep the weight down), and also use my 2" Colt Cobra in 32S&W. I don't think I want to carry a full size 45 or even my Smith 65, too heavy. If I get 3 choices, my Beretta Tomcat would also be a 'Summer carry' when wearing shorts and a tee shirt. I already have a wallet-holster for it, and a belly band that I can use with all the choices I mentioned. I'm a smallish woman and just don't think something like my XSE would be practical, and I refuse to carry in my purse. It must be on my body.

I alternate between a lightweight 1911 Commander in a good comfortable IWB holster (Sparks VMII) and a S&W 642 w/ Barami grips. It depends on how I am dressed, the weather, where I will be going, and how physically active I anticipate being on any given day. Either way I always have one of the two, and I always have a good knife.

The 642 definitely gets used more this time of year, it's easier to conceal when dressed for warm weather and less of a burden at the end of a long day. The Barami grips hook over my belt and the gun sits IWB @ my appendix and doesn't move at all throughout the day. The only time I ever question it is when I lift my right leg up to get in my truck and it shifts to point at my crotch for that brief instant. :p

It is very cool, also extremely safe and very accurate...but it is heavy...I would love a P7 with a titanium frame

As I'm getting older and my L3 & L4 become more bothersome, less weight is a good thing. The alloy frame of the EMP makes a lot of difference after a long day.

The Kahr is something I usually grab on the way out the door, the P7 or EMP is more for dressy occasions

What I have is

Smith 686 SSR .357 IWB behind hip
Sig 226 9mm OWB hip
Sig 232 .380 IWB in front of hip

I like the wheelgun it's actually the most comfortable. The 226 is to bulky and the little Sig just shoots like a .22 and I want a pocket pistol that's a little lighter without the boat anchor pocket print.

At my renewal I'm going to revise to

Smith 686 SSR .357
Kahr K40 elite, 40 cal
Kahr PM9 9mm

When I had a CCW back in 92, I started out with a S&W 357, but quicky transitioned to a G19, what I found was the nastogia of carrying kinda went away and laziness start setting it, originally, it was a G19 in a Galco concealable, then just the G19, eventually settled on a smith snubby with internal hammer (kinda like the 640) in 38spl +p, with these you just slip them in your pocket and you are good to go.

I already have the pistols, and have it in the back of my mind to put them to work for CCW if ever the opportunity came up... Maybe if I leave LA County...

Glock 29SF - my all around, general purpose pistol. This is what I would take if I needed one dependable, concealable pistol at my side, and could be anywhere from the backwoods, to Inglewood, and couldn't not be. I'd have mags loaded with different loads for different needs - 10mm is a jack of all trades caliber.

Glock 26 - I'd take this for most of my around town daily activities during hot weather, or when I need a slightly smaller gun.

Of course it does. But it is more likely to be questioned by TX LEOs in the unlikely event you have an encounter. The AZ CCW also doesn't cover the NICS check when you purchase a firearm. With a TX CHL (CCW) there is no federal background check when you make a purchase. As a CA resident I'd suggest the AZ or UT CCW over anything else; but as a TX resident, it behooves him to have a TX CHL.

Also, my CHL cost me $70 total, so I don't know how the AZ CCW could be $200 cheaper than that. :p

ETA: I just saw you're in TX too, so I guess I'm preaching to the choir. To each his own. ;)

2) ease to conceal
3) .40 S&W
4) if your in the thick of it and NEED to use it all you do is pull the trigger, no need to worry about having to deal with other safeties that you might forget about in the heat of things.

Glock -27 daily. If my "spidey sense" tingles I will carry an additional gun. Usually a 1911 in an IWB Super-tuck. Of course those are only there so I can fight my way back to my truck and either the KEL-TEC SU16 or mossberg 590A1.:73:

This is a bit of a puzzler for me. I like my G26, as I have plenty of high cap mags for it. I also like the M&P 40c, but I only have 10 round magazines for that. And it is a bit bulkier. But I also really, really like the reliability and compactness of many of my older revolvers. So I don't really know. I guess it would be the G26, as I already carry that one occasionally when I am in Free states, or out hunting. Or one of the oddball S&W or Colt revolvers if I felt like being different. A 200 grain chunk of lead isn't as sexy as the latest JHP radioactive exploding tip with cyanide and a 40 watt range. But it goes where I point it, so there is something to be said for it.

Like others here I have a ccw and carry either a Smith Airweight .38 or a Smith 1911sc. Commander length, scandium frame .45. Sometimes both depending on what I'm doing that day, but that's rare. The .38 goes into a pocket holster with speed strips and or a speed loader and the .45 goes on my right hip in a holster long with spare mags in the usual place.

I have a permit, and I carry my Glock 26 about 90% of the time in a Comtac Minotaur holster.

The other 10%, I pocket carry a Bersa Thunder in an Uncle Mike's. It's a shade to big to pocket carry regularly, and I have plans to replace it with a Kahr 380 or Ruger LCP.

ETC.

That is a difficult call. I have a non-resident CCW and when traveling to a state that recognizes it I just carry my full size gun. Whatever I have to have with me. So far when I've done this it has been winter time so I could use a nice loose jacket to conceal the gun so size was not an issue.

For a summer carry gun, I would want to buy something more concealable. T-shirts do a lousy job of hiding a gun. As do most my summer clothing. So I'd probably have to change my wardrobe to those ugly loose Hawaiian shirts everyone loves. The 511 shirts designed for concealment, always fit me too snugly to be useful and the size above fits me like a tent.

So that means a smaller gun is needed. I would love it if I could keep a Glock 19 from printing. Experience tells me otherwise. I'm worried about a Glock 26 printing as well. Its just too dark thick. So that means I would probably look into a Khar PM9. It is about half the width and a little easier to hide. Possibly even a Walther PPS, although the trigger is a little stiff and the reset a little long. Plus it is not on the roster so I have to jump through a hoop or two to get it. I might even consider dropping down in caliber, but that would not be my first choice.

If not for the expense of it, I would already have my California CCW. Sadly it has been a rough year. Every time I think I am getting ahead up pops another unexpected expense totally out of the blue. This month, it was fixing a messed up tooth. My dental care plan appartently sucks. Only paid a tiny part of the bill. I had to pay $2K.

I just got back from a trip to WA and I took my Kel-Tec PF9 up with me. I'm 100% pleased with it.

It works great in a shoulder holster under a Hawaiian shirt while walking all around downtown Seattle and Pike's Place Market.
It works great in a waistband holster on a 5 mile walk to my friend's house in Fremont, and when it gets too hot you can slip it in your pocket and take your shirt off for the 5 mile walk back.
It works great in the waistband holster while driving a car, in a pickup truck, in a tractor, and while hoeing weeds in the fields (yes I've tested all of these).

The ultimate test, however, was while visiting my grandparents in Moses Lake, WA. I was with my fiancé and I had some nice clothes on that she had bought for me (slim jeans and a tight fitting shirt). The firearm printed very prominently when I had it in the waistband holder with those clothes, so I tried just tucking the firearm in the waistband by itself a little deeper without any holster. It pretty much disappeared, and didn't move at all the whole time I walked around Moses Lake. My fiancé didn't even notice it even though she had been leaning against it in the car for several hours. "You had that thing the whole time?!?!" she exclaimed.

Due to my experience in WA, I almost think that the PF9 is overkill on the light/small factor. It's definitely the perfect summertime firearm for those who won't settle for any less than 9mm. I'm now looking into a Glock 30 or one of those snazzy little 1911 carry pistols so that I could upgrade to .45ACP whenever the weather and clothing permits me to do so.

I'm no expert, but I think you want to be pretty careful carrying a weapon like the PF-9, which lacks a safety, in the pants without a holster if you're carrying with a round chambered. Just seems like a chance for something like a fold of cloth to touch the trigger. There are lots of smarter and more experienced folks here who may chime in on this - I could be wrong.

I have in the past carried this one, remember the Quake of 89? That qualified as a SHTF night and I carried this one. W. German P220 .45acp I bought in 1987.

I would carry this because I shoot it accurately but also because of its superior aesthetics. There is just something about a gun made in 1945, made out of blued steel and real wood, that polymer can never compare to.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p13/AimSmllMssSmll/large_bpten2.jpg
I would carry my Kimber BP 10-II, polymer frame 1911 with its double stack magazine because it holds ten rounds of a good caliber--and I shoot it accurately.

http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p13/AimSmllMssSmll/SW342WITHCARTRIDGES141OZLEFTprofile.jpg

During the summer, I would have to put my Smith into a rucksack or man-purse. My niece carriers her sig in a "man-purse." It is very manly and quite rugged. It looks like a funky pack. She carries it on airliners all the time. Retrieving the sig from her purse is almost effortless.

If that's your idea of "real small" you must be a pretty big guy? Don't get me wrong, a Glock 27 is a perfectly fine carry gun, it's just not an "oh god I need something small" carry gun. :p

Or I could be wrong. But in my experience, the width of the gun is harder to conceal than the length & height; and the small Glocks are still wide guns.

Ruger SP101 .357 Magnum 3". Powerful, accurate, reliable. Handles like a full size gun, but isn't.
Colt Trooper .357 Magnum 4". Powerful, accurate, reliable. Gives me better sights, an extra round, and a longer barrel than my SP101. It is a little bulkier to carry though. Need to get a Simply Rugged holster for it.

Caveat before I list my choices. Honestly, I NEVER worry about weapon weight. The right holster fixes that problem. I carry full-size steel frames all day long in the Louisiana heat. If you can stand the extra weight, heavier guns are easier to shoot accurate multiples-on-target. Warm weather: I'd go for a .357 snubbie like Smith and Wesson, Dan Wesson, Ruger sp101, or a Security Six. Once again, I'm not very weight conscious, so I'm talking steel revolvers not air-weights. Next choice would be a CZ RAMI alloy frame. Long sleeve weather: Cz 75 compact models ( standard or PCR in alloy frame). Sport coats or heavier: CZ 75 B preferably with an Omega trigger or SAO.
--I'd carry any of these as long as I could conceal them effectively. The only one I'd probably not carry if I could get away with bigger would be the Rami. It's got really small grips for me. I'd carry any of the revolvers as a back up to the CZ 75's. Not for fear of malfunction, but just in case I ran out of ammo and spare mags! LOL. Or more seriously, in case I somehow became disarmed from my primary weapon.

S&W Revolver 38 ~3" revolver loaded with +P rounds
or 357mag 4" with average 357mag loads.

I don't subscribe to the bigger/faster caliber mantra is always better.

I've tried a lot of different combinatins over the years. I'm limited to 3 handguns in my county.

My current list is a Kahr P380 which I pocket carry religiously and which is especially nice for the hot summer t-shirts and shorts attire, a Colt Wiley Clapp LW Commander for cold weather carry, and a S&W 629 3" with moderate 44mag loads for back-woods carry.

We all have a permit. It's that dusty piece of parchment sitting in the National Archives. I had a PM9 but sold it. I'd say one of these but I don't like the company nor the 700 rounds you have to put through these to prove reliable so I'd say a Ruger LCP in either 380 or 9. But hate is not a word strong enough to describe my feelings for safeties on pistols. But yeah, something small and light.

I would carry my Glock 36...

For summer I would get something really small.. like a Ruger LCP or similar

Depends, I sold off almost all my compact guns as I don't get to use them here in CA much.

But if I were carrying daily because I had a permit, I'd probably buy an XD40SC because I really enjoy the way they shoot. Kicks a bit harder than the 9, but I shoot mostly .40 these days so it's just easier to consolidate on a single caliber.

Or on the other hand I might just carry my XD40. With my supertuck it really doesn't print unless I'm wearing very tight clothing.

Off duty , I carry a Glock 23 with 13 rd round magazine plus a 22rd spare magazine behind my hip. Works fine under a t-shirt.

My FAVORITE off duty guns are 2-3 inch Smith and and Wesson revolvers with Federal 147 +P+ JHP's. I own 4 of them . Love to carry them!!!!! The pack very well in a right holster.

As far as a CCW choices go, do You see a 10 round limit as a REAL issue?

no, 1911's have an 8+1 or less capacity, and generally I carry an extra mag, it's a non issue for me unless I'm traveling to Colombia, South East Asia, or Iraq

A S&W J Frame
I do carry when I can out of state.
A J Frame 1 and ˝ inch barrel will go with a suite or shorts at the camp ground. Or anything in between. Larger when weather and attire permits. Always can carry the J Frame.

m&p 40. my hand is to big for compacts and subcompacts. I do not feel comfortable holding them so in my case thats out. being a big guy the full size m&p would look small on me..... I would probably do a smallish revolver though. those are a bit more comfy to hold than the semi auto sub/compact

HK P2000 SK in .40S&W. Sadly, the 357SIG version isn't on the Roster, and my IA won't allow me to barrel swap.

As to the why asked by the OP: Outstanding HK quality, small sub compact size, relatively light recoil for it's size, and 100% will go bang every time the trigger is pulled.

My gun shop has a XD9sc for $429 (+3 mags) that I would buy tomorrow if I could easily concealed carry. Felt good in my hands, felt good in my pocket. The only thing holding me back was the $200 application fee and high odds of CCW rejection. Can't wait till I move out of California or until they change the laws.

You betcha. G19 for example. I like a normal capacity mag and two extras. I've also been known to carry two G 17 mags as extras. Never know how many assailants will show up where they shouldn't. If I could do it, there'd be a couple "happy sticks" in the truck at all times, too.

I do have a CA LTC.
Three guns listed
S&W 342Ti 2"
Ruger SP101 3"
Colt Trooper 4"

All get some carry time. The 342 is in my pocket almost all the time, even when I also have one of the others with me as well.
Of the other two, the SP101 gets the most carry.
Most likely the Trooper will be replaced on the LTC by a 1911 at some point in the not to distant future.

PS. When I travel to SHALL ISSUE states, I seldom see full size, police duty type pistols being used for CCW. I mostly see short barrel revolvers, compact 1911's, Kahr pistols, single stack Sig's . ETC.
