I'm in the market for a .223 semi-auto rifle with detachable mag and without a pistol grip. The only guns that I know of that fit the bill are the Ruger Mini-14 and the Saiga .223. Are there any other rifles worth taking a look at that fit the bill? I know that I could get an AR15 or another .223 "AW" type rifle without a pistol grip, but that seems to be a little out of my price range.

The Kel-tec SU16-CA should be on your shopping list. It takes AR mags so that's a great plus, also a bit more accurate IMO than the Mini-14.

Of course a Su16-CA runs in the $500 range. My redently completed gripless build was $600 total and that includes all the parts to go fixed mag along with the appropriate PG and stock.

Robinson Arms M96 with no pistol grip. Pricy and clumsy, but it's another option.

Yeah too bad Robarms is making the 96 right now or I'd be all over that. Hopefully they whip up another batch soon.

Any news of Volquartson Evolution?

It takes standard M16/AR15 mags.
It does not have pistol grip, nor thumb hole stock.
It should be darn accurate.
It is expensive.

It should (start to) be shipped several months ago.

How come we've never seen one on the market/range?

Because its too stink'n much! You can build up an OLL for less then half the price and it will shoot just as well if not better. I guess if money was not an option it would be nice to have but I just can't see myself spending that amount. For the same price you can pick up a M1A and upgrade her to shoot sub MOA all day.

I had the EoTech and the Bushnell Holosight. Ended up selling the EoTech and keeping the Bushnell. For the money it's a darn good sight.

Not everybody who wants a .223 semi wants a "military" black rifle, which is why the Mini 14 has a market at all. I wish the VQ Evo was somewhat more reasonably priced, but it's basically a custom build. Gorgeous rifle, though...

I also got an SU-16CA, which I really dig. Good shooter, relatively inexpensive, and has some interesting features. Mine:

People, just a thought.

According to VQ, the EVO is an auto-loader. Anybody ever be interested in what kind of mechanism it is?

1) It does not look like AR's gas system, nor buffer system.
2) Maybe it's using the recoil system like M14. But how does it blow backward? Is it direct blow back like 10/22?
3) According to the location of mag, it's not bullpup.

Any input?
