Ok folks, I'm giving thought about getting a new higher end 1911. What your opinions,,Les Bear, Wilson,Ed Brown???? Gun will be strictly a range, utility target gun. It will not be carried. Whats the best and why?

They are all splendid examples of firearms workmanship.

Les is going to be a better bang for the buck. Wilsons are priced a little steeper, but in my opinion have a little more attention to detail on fit and finish.

I have a Les, and wanting another 1911 in 9mm Iím looking at a Wilson next (otherwise Iíd get a LB in 9mm if they had it).

The bluing on a LB will wear VERY QUICKLY!!!!!!!!!!! So if finish is of a concern to you youíll need to keep that in mind, and pay a few bucks more and anti up for a Wilson.

A well worn LB is AWESOME looking. But if thatís not your thing you might be disappointed.

Get the one you like how it looks and feels. It wont really matter all else considering.

Get a solid used full size Colt and send it no one of the KNOWN 1911 custom shops.

I got the best results that way.

For ~2K, Bear will make you happy and proud . For low to mid to higher than mid 2K, check out Ed Brown's 1911, upper 2K to 3K into 4K, Wilson will do you right. Look at Bear/Brown price lists or call John 1911 Heaven for a better than MSRP deal.

When you're up there with the high end 1911, you can't do wrong with any of those 3. Good luck.

I would look at the Les Baer Premium II with the 1.5" guarantee at 50yrds MSRP around $2000, but you can probably find one cheaper on gunbroker.

or go for a Dan Wesson, and spend the extra on upgrades, which is what I am doing.

Dan Wesson Valor... tested better than the Les Baers in that Dave Severns video on 1911forum

I got a Les Baer TRS for $1850 from crazy John. I literally love this gun.

Love it so much that I will order a custom Les Baer TRS with a full dust cover Monolith frame in 9mm.

What upgrades?
I bought a PM7 when they were still under $1K. I left it bone stock and am very happy.

Please point me in the right direction to a Ed Brown, Wilson, or Springfield Professional for $2,000. Thank you. :)

I've own guns from all three companies and for the $ like the fact that Browns feel like a solid tool and keep that utilitarian heft of a Les Baer gun but are also in line with the attention to detail and fine finishing you get with a Wilson. The fit is a bit more in keeping with Wilson in regards to tightness: likely NO play but if any, it's just barely detectable. Everything moves smoothly and without drag while still fitting/meshing snug. I can't quite explain it but Baer and Brown guns somehow feel more substancial than the Wilson....BUT Wilson is definitey the nicest of the three in every sense (except that Baer guns tend to be the most accurate of the bunch by a hair). If you're trying to keep within a certain budget, while I feel Wison guns are superior to the other two makers (albeit by a FRACTION): I do not believe the price differential justifies a Wilson unless it's simply THE gun for you. My most shot gun is a Baer PII just because I like punching paper with it best but my go-to is a Brown SF. If I could only have one 1911 it would be a Brown.

I recommend a Springfield TRP Operator. Having a rail gives the gun a nice balance, plus the 5 inch bull barrel dampens the recoil. I shot an MC op and a TRP op side by side and the recoil is definitely tamer on the TRP.

If you can go beyond 2k, then you might want to consider the SA Professional with light rail. That's the 1911 that the FBI chose, so it must be really good. I recently bought one but haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet, so I cannot comment on how it shoots.

I have considered buying a Les Baer before, but a lot of the reviews/comments that I have read states that the finish does not last.

Anyone have experience with Nighthawk Customs? I'm taking a hard look at their predator III or T3 for a carry 1911.

+1 if he had mentioned 'competition'... and IF it was CA legal. :(

+1 surprise it took this long for someone to recommend NightHawk..

I've owned Wilsons (CQB, Protector, Tactical Elite), NightHawk (Predator, Predator II, Talon, Talon II, Talon IV), Les Baer (Premier II) as well as Yost Customs and others...

Of all, I ended up keeping the Nighthawk.. overall workmanship was excellent
and they pay attention to detail

Ed Brown suck in customer service .. had a kobra with issues and they pretty much said you have to pay them to get it fixed... last ed brown gun i bought, I even sold my Special forces because of that phone call and will never pick up another Ed Brown again

les baer is my other recommendation, but it's a gun meant to be shot and not babied.. tool gun and yes it will turn purple on you

Buy a beatup 1911 of any make. Send it to a custom gunsmith that specializes in the application you most likely identify with. Bullseye, IPSC/IDPA, etc... Swap out almost all the parts and have the gunsmith handfit everything.
You can specify everything from trigger pull weight, trigger pull type (roll vs clean), finish, and all the other stuff people tweak.
You save on sales tax, and you can get a custom pistol that doesn't need to be on the CA list.

Dan Wesson Stainless (about $1500) or Black Valor (about $1800) are the best value for your money. You would need to be roster exempt or use the single shot exemption to get one in CA.

Check out this in depth review and draw your own conclusions!

I have a Wilson CQB and would buy another. It gets thrown around alot but their cst service and support is top shelf I have been shooting it in matches for the past 3 or so years and am loving it. The only other thing I would confided would be to build up a nice older Colt by a good smith. Just to have one.

If I had up to $2k, it'd be a Dan Wesson Valor. Maybe with the custom work from Severn's Customs (target barrel, etc). I'd get a plain stainless one and have it Hard Hat coated.

I would say Dan wesson and some ammo, or a les Baer. I would say Springfield TRP if they cost $1100 like they did when I bought my SS one four years ago. But at the $1500-1800 they are going for now, a Dan wesson is the better buy. This is coming from a guy who owns 2 TRP guns. I say Dan wesson and ammo. Good luck.

Nice guns to own!

Not to hijack the thread, but how would you compare the predator and the talon? The predator is very intriguing but I've no experience with a barrel like that.

Thanks!

My personal choice for a high-end target 1911 was and is the S&W PC1911. Mine is Melonite (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_764972_-1_757766_757752_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y) over stainless but you can save money going with plain stainless (http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/15094). These are true hand built 1911s just like Baer and Wilson. It feels like the slide is on bearings and the trigger is ~ 3-1/4lbs out of the box. A bit light for self defense but great at the range. :D

This is my pride & joy S&W PC1911 with a set of Esmeralda's grips and a short trigger swap to better fit my hands.
