This is different then the one that would have came on the factory upper. I am not sure if it is a muzzle break (my thoughts) or a flash hider. I am thinking of replacing it with a YHM meat grinder muzzle break, just not sure if the one currently installed is a break or not.

Those are the only holes on the unit. The other side is solid.

Looks like a brake to me. But you have to show a pic of the front of the device for me to have an anwer.

What does the front of the piece look like?

If the bullet exit hole is really large then its most likely classified as a flash hider. If the bullet exit hole is only a little bigger than the bullet then you probably have a muzzle break

My battery is dead or I would take a picture. The opening starts out the size of the bullet and smoothly flares out to the size of the barrel.

Interesting, I think you should ask Iggy. He is supposedly and expert in AW identification.

Is this it? Does not look like a muzzle brake to me despite what the product description says. I guess that is why DA Hunt has a problem with SB23.

More info. DPMS just calls is a compensator and it is just designed to decrease muzzle flip. Since it is not designed to be a flash hider I guess the real answer is that if it decreases muzzle flash it is a flash hider.

Here's the general criteria in California on these things:

If it's fun, it's probably illegal.

So, is it fun?

Most certainly a flash hider. I'm glad to see some of you are catching onto the fact that its the interior diameter of the muzzle device that determines whether it is a flash hider or not.
