I recently finished my first OLL build and was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent case at a good price? Thanks!

If you have a 20" upper with the standard A2 stock, you'll want a case that accomodates 40-42". There are plenty of soft cases at the show that go for $30, give or take $10. As cheap as the soft cases seem to be at the show, they seem to hold up well. All of my soft cases are gun show buys.

My only concern with the gun show cases is that none protect the muzzle of the gun from the zipper while encased. That's why I try to use muzzle protectors on any gun in one of those cases.

If you want a good quality case, try the Creedmoor case:

http://www.creedmoorsports.com/store/product.php?productid=16293&cat=277&page=1

It's twice as much as anything at the gun shows, but you pay for quality cordura, waterproofing, good lining around the zipper areas, and I believe closed cell foam, which does not absorb water.

The Blackhawk cases should be good designs. I have one that came free with my McMillan A-5 stock that I had built for me awhile back (for my Savage). Eagle Industries has cases of similar design to the Blackhawk. Eagle and Blackhawk pretty much have the same product line, except Eagle is made in the USA, as opposed to Vietnam (Blackhawk).

There are plenty of hard cases around. Starlight makes a good 40" case, as does Pelican.

Or you can go with a home built job like this:

I've got an AceCase Assault weapons case (http://acecase.com/Heavy-Duty-Assault-Rifle-Case-Nylon-p-16139.html). I like it a lot. it's much better than the el-cheapo my brother picked up from somewhere. I've been thinking that with the money I have in them, it may be worthwhile to buy a no-bs pelican/storm case though.

I just got a double long gun hard case from Big5 for 20 bucks last week, works fine...the rifle stays in there.

Softcases, I like ACE. Hardcases, I don't really like the cheap ones, Pelican and Starlight are nice.

Unless it's full auto I doubt you have an Assault Weapon to put in the case. :D

Here watch this.

I'll also recommend Ace for cheap softcases. I like them for my semi-auto handguns, and have a few of their "assault weapon" cases (their name, not mine).

If you want to spend more and get better protection, Eagle makes good cases. They have nice touches like a strip of padding along the zipper that the Ace cases don't have. There are other good brands, but I don't have any of them.

For light use - safe storage, trips to the range - Ace is fine. For anything more rugged, or to protect more expensive hardware, Eagle's a much better case, at about twice the price ($80 vs $40). They're my current favorite.

For hard cases - I have several of the $20-on-sale Big 5 hard cases, and I hate them. The gun's not held securely in them, and the handles pinch my hand when I pick them up. I also have an exceptional Starlight case, but it's way to bulky and heavy for routine use. It would be great for travel, though.

I'm going to buy the Galati XT .

This place has the best price I've seen . I have a Blackhawk that is similar and the Galati is a better product by far .

Nice and inexpensive Boyt soft tactical rifle case. Reinforced rib and padded with 1" of foam. The 42 inch model is backordered until January 17th though.

I would have bought a Galati XT if this one wasn't cheaper though.

If you want a hard case, Pelican is the way to go, but more expensive and cumbersome.

I never said I had an assault weapon, only the case. And to be truthful the term for a fully automatic rifle is "Assault Rifle". Are you trying to be funny or did you not read what I wrote?

I really like Pelican cases because they are indestructible (with lifetime warranty), are very secure (when locked), travel well with wheels, and they look great:)

With a kitchen knife to cut the closed cell foam and some 3M foam adhesive, you can get a very expensive look for a little elbow grease. If I can do it anyone can!

If and when my new RRA Predator Pursuit comes, I will use either the Pelican 1720 or 1750 gun case. You can find them here for a decent price.....

Get an SKB....They are super durable have a lifetime warranty and they will also pay for damages on whatever is inside the case!

I went to a local shop and got a cheap AR case for like $20. It holds three 30 round magazines, has 2 other side pockets for misc stuff, and can hold the AR just fine. The downside is it doesn't lock and it's not a hard case... but all in all, for $20, you can't go wrong.

I have an SKB double rifle case. It is a nice case. Both my 16" fit nicely in it. The 18 fits as well but barely with the scope mounted.

If you are on budget, the cheap $20 hard cases in Big5 or Wal Mart work just fine.

If you have more cash to spend, get a Pelican, Starlite(or Starlight???) or SKB hard case. I remember some Pelican cases are designed for M16 rifles especially, with pre-cut foam inside.

Talk about pelican cases has anyone located a place that does the cutouts for various rifles ?

I'm too lazy to do it myself, And on top of that I'm sure it would be done a lot better if the place that does it has a DIE to cut the foam.

That is if many of them are done this way it would be more cost and time effective than cutting them out by hand.

The link on my prior post sells cases specific to various AR15's. They didn't make ones for my HK (only Glock/Sig) or my M4 so I made them myself (Its pretty easy).

I researched custom cut outs and it was HUGE cash because it was just a one off order (DIY)! Besides, I much prefer the closed cell foam for moisture and oil issues and none of the pre cuts used it:)

It will take you like an hour to DIY and it will be a perfect match to your configuration.

I bought both a soft case and a hard case. The hard case I bought was a DoskoSport double rifle case. I think I paid around $50.00 for it. The soft AR case I bought at a show for around $25.
