I know there have been a few threads about AK pistols already but search isn't picking them up at the moment so here we go with another thread.

A guy from work wants me to cut down a Romy kit for him so he can build a pistol, I think I have a way for him to make it California legal but figured I'd run it by the people here to see what I forgot.

The plan is for him to assemble the kit which would have a 9-1/2 in barrel, no threads on the barrel, and a pistol-type rear trunion into a home-bent flat receiver. The mag well would be blocked, there would be a bolt hold open mod, the pistol could only hold one round and it would be loaded into the chamber by hand. The gas system would still function so the fired round's case would be ejected, the bolt hold open would keep the carrier back, and you slip another round in the chamber through the ejection port and release the bolt hold.

Would this meet the requirements for the home-built single shot pistol? If so, how permanent would the mag well block need to be? What about the wood grip up front, it would be smooth and not protrude under the weapon?

What do you guys think?

If your using the gas the cycle back the bolt i believe it is no longer single shot. He better be building it on a pistol receiver also. I wouldn't do this.

Why not block the gas and use magazines rather than single load?

Building from a flat would ensure that it's a virgin receiver

I was under the impresion that a single shot pistol could only hold one shot

Here's the real question: why would you want to risk a potential felony to build a pump-action inaccurate handgun in your garage? Risking trouble to finish off an 80% 1911 or SIG frame I could possibly see... but not a single shot/pump action AK-47 pistol.

That's what Im wondering.. everytime I see these threads, the first thought that comes to mind is "Why?"

Yeah, Krinks are only fun with a stock and a 75 round drum.

Cheaper and more useful to buy a TC Contender or Encore these days.

"A semiautomatic pistol capable of accepting detachable magazines"

If we could find a way to make the top cover able to fold open and lock the bolt open... you could probably load it using stripper clips.

i think a ak pistol with no magwell would look kinda dumb, although im intrigued oddly. maybe you could weld a cut dismantled clip fill with epoxy to where it would hit the reciever. are there any options for 7.62x39 or .223 pistols? single shot is fine ... i just love 7.62x39

I was thinking of using a mag body welded in place to give it "the look". The mag body would be blocked so it wouldn't be able to hold any rounds but would house the bolt hold-open mechanism and release button. Lot's of hassle for a single shot but still doable.
