For that many orders, a price break of only $14* doesn't seem to be much. I must be missing something, what is it?

*Price compared to Midways daily price on what seems to be the same upper

Just a question: I'm assuming a .223 not 5.56 chamber?

I could only find one DPMS fluted 24" varmint upper on Midway's website. And that was in .204 Ruger and it was $800 somthing. Do you have the link? Ahhh- I see you edited. This is fluted... the others are not...

Ahh, I knew I had to be missing something. I didn't catch the fluted part. Midway has the same non-fluted one for $525 +$13 shipping. So this is a much better deal than what I first figured.

If the barrel says .223 I'm sure it's a .223 size chamber. My two DPMS rifles say 5.56.

Yeah, you would think, but the barrel says 1:9 and the post says 1:8; the barrel says .223 but the post doesn't specify caliber.. so I'm still asking. I would want to know before I buy... wouldn't others? .223 means only .223. 5.56 can handle both. It could be .204 for all we know. But I'd rather know for sure than assume.

For those that want more info on why scootergmc is concerned...

5.56 mm NATO versus .223 Remington

While the 5.56 mm and .223 cartridges are very similar, they are not identical. Military cases are made from thicker brass than commercial cases, which reduces the powder capacity (an important consideration for handloaders), and the NATO specification allows a higher chamber pressure. The 5.56 mm chambering, known as a NATO or mil-spec chambers, have a longer leade, which is the distance between the mouth of the cartridge and the point at which the rifling engages the bullet. The .223 chambering, known as SAAMI chamber, is allowed to have a shorter leade, and is only required to be proof tested to the lower SAAMI chamber pressure. To address these issues, various proprietary chambers exist, such as the Wylde chamber (Rock River Arms)[1] or the Armalite chamber, which are designed to handle both 5.56 mm and .223 equally well.

Using commercial .223 cartridges in a 5.56-chambered rifle should work reliably, but generally will not be as accurate as when fired from a .223-chambered gun due to the excessive lead.[2] Using 5.56 mil-spec cartridges (such as the M855) in a .223-chambered rifle can lead to excessive wear and stress on the rifle and even be unsafe, and the SAAMI recommends against the practice.[3] Some commercial rifles marked as ".223 Remington" are in fact suited for 5.56 mm, such as many commercial AR-15 variants and the Ruger Mini-14, but the manufacturer should always be consulted to verify that this is acceptable before attempting it, and signs of excessive pressure (such as flattening or gas staining of the primers) should be looked for in the initial testing with 5.56 mm ammunition.[4]

Then here is what Armalight says:
http://www.armalite.com/library/techNotes/tnote45.htm
FACTS:

.223 Remington (SAAMI standard) and 5.56mm (NATO standard) rifle chambers are almost identical. The difference is largely limited to the “freebore,” the cylindrical space in front of the case mouth, and the “lead” or “leade,” the the tapered region that eases the bullet into full engagement with the rifling. NATO and SAAMI cartridges can normally be used interchangeably with no problem.
The SAAMI chamber features less freebore and a tighter leade, which normally provide better bullet fit and match-grade accuracy than the NATO chamber. It is wonderfully suited to match bullets.

Millions of rounds of NATO ammunition have been fired safely in Eagle Arms' and ArmaLite’s SAAMI chambers over the past 15 years. Occasionally a non-standard round (of generally imported) ammunition will fit too tightly in the leade, and resistance to early bullet movement can cause elevated chamber pressures. These pressures are revealed by overly flattened or powder stains that reveal gasses leaking around the primer.

Now here is what DPMS says about their chambers:

What chambers are used in DPMS barrels?
The standard military contoured barrels are chambered in 5.56 NATO, the DPMS Bull Barrels are chambered in .223 Rem.

I've always loved Armalite's take on the whole 5.56 vs. .223. Something I would rather not chance.

Thanks for the info on the DPMS barrels. That helps. Edit: FWIW, this looks like a good deal!!

I will close out the group buy on Saturday, if we don't hit 20 the pricing no longer applies. If you are still interested, I can negotiate for 19 or less. Get the word out to other Forums please.

The Supplier is going to honor the price, we are only at 19 though. The supplier also mentioned he would offer other upper options so we could hit the 20. If you want a different upper to go along with the 24" Varmint, let me know and I'll get some pricing. This isn't to replace existing 24" uppers, just so we can get people that don't want a Varmint Upper to join our group and hit 20.

No problem on this end, just wondering what happened to you.

On your dog, I feel for you. Wife's cat got injured (later figured it was a car hit) so she rushed the critter into the vet to see if they could help. Instead of giving her a gut feel prognosis at that time, the tossed the guy into an oxygen tent until they could get to him. 10 minutes later the cat died from his injuries. Vet charge me $600 for that dang oxygen tent ...unbelievable.

Now for the rest of you guys that have not confirmed this order with MUD yet....how about getting to it!! I see 6 of you are still unaccounted for (see post #1). If you don't see that magic "+" next to your name you need to get on the ball here.

I've done quite a bit of research on the Barrel twist for .223 Remington in the AR-15 and what I've found is the consensus now from many heavy user varmit AR shooters is the 1:8 twist is the most versatile, and accurate for a wide range of bullet weights.

The 1:8 is even shooting most all of the light weights accurately in these rifles. They claim the conventional thinking on twist and weight does not apply here. That's one reason why you see some many offerings in the 1:8. Now the 1:9 they claim is definitely finicky, and will only shoot certain weights well.

I've found much of this info reading through various searches on:

http://www.predatormastersforums.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php

So this is why I've chosen the 1:8, because of the confirmed findings by hardcore users, this is the most versatile twist in the AR-15. Also the chambering for the .223 Rem instead of the NATO caliber version has a shorter throat which will be good for my cast bullet experiments.

Will this unsold extra upper have any impact on our orders shipping from the seller?

Has no effect on the rest of the Group Buy, as soon as supplier gets at least 16 Payments he'll start shipping.

What type of optics and rings do you plan to install on the beast??

OldLandParkPat

I have the same question.

Is the eye level of a scope with standard rings to low for these flat tops? I've got a high powered Nikon, on my Howa with Leupold QR release rings I wanted to use.

I think you would have to factor in the buttstock type. I think an A1 or A2 you would be OK but if you had a stock with a more upright cheek weld you might need more hight. ?????? Just thinking out loud:confused:

Got my upper today and it looks good thanks.

One item- I thought this was to be a new upper from DPMS, and there's no documentation, no manual, waranty card, no DPMS box.

Is this a discontinued model, or a second, or something like that?

I was looking especially for a manual with their barrel breakin suggestions etc., etc,.

I am missing something?..

Received mine today, Friday Feb. 9th. Nice upper. It even has sling stud installed and QD swivel. One thing I don't like though, the barrel is too "blinky". Is there a way to blacken it, like bluing ot something? Thanks.

I looked up the tracking number online just now, and see that "I" signed for the package.... even though I was miles away when it showed:eek:

I'm going have to call up my mom and ask why I was never told I had a twin.

I had the opposite problem, the Driver walked down the side of my house to my kitchen window and knocked on it..... Scared the crap out of my wife:eek: We have a "Do Not Ring Doorbell, Baby sleeping. Please Leave Packages!" But he decided to make the extra effort to get someones attention by knocking on a window. Not sure if I'm happy with this or not, I have my upper but my wife and kids are a little startled.

The Uppers are Brand New from a DPMS Supplier, he orders in Bulk to keep pricing down directly from DPMS. He actually drives to DPMS to pick them up. They are configured for our group buy, so you might not see others on their Website unless you go to the configure section.

It is an awesome peice for sure. The machining is real nice. I don't see one flaw anywhere on this upper. Fired a few rounds through it, but it was to dark to do a sight in. We'll put her through some rounds tomorrow.

Anyone know where I can find an accu-wedge in CA? I don't want to pay a fortune for shipping to the likes of Midway for one.. :D

You might try having the barrel bead blasted to a mat finish. I plan on sending mine in to have a custom JP Rifles comp installed and then see about the blasting.

Three Year Limited Warranty

This DPMS/Panther Arms firearm is warranted to the original retail customer for Three Years from the date of purchase against defects in material and workmanship. All parts and labor or replacement at our option are covered.

Transportation to and from our repair facilities, government fees, damage caused by failure to perform normal maintenance, sales outside the United States, damage due to high velocity, high pressure, reloaded, or other non-standard ammunition, or any unauthorized repair, modification, misuse, abuse, or alteration of the product is not covered by this limited warranty.

Any implied warranties, including the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose, are limited to one year from date of purchase. Consequential or incidental damages and/or expenses, or any other expenses are not covered by this warranty.

To obtain warranty performance send your firearm with proof of retail purchase, freight prepaid to:

DPMS/Panther Arms
3312 12 Street SE
St. Cloud, MN, 56304

Alterations & Modifications Warning

Altering or modifying parts is dangerous and will void the warranty. This DPMS/Panther Arms rifle was manufactured to perform properly with the original parts as designed. It is your duty to make sure any parts you buy are made for this rifle and are installed correctly and that neither the originals nor the replacements are altered or changed. Your DPMS/Panther Arms rifle is a complex precision tool with many parts that must relate correctly with other parts in order for proper and safe operation. Putting a rifle together wrong or with incorrect or modified parts can result in a damaged rifle, serious personal injury or death to you and others through malfunction. Always have a qualified gunsmith work on your rifle or at least check any work not performed by a gunsmith.

Barrel Information Warning

To achieve the best results for accuracy you should clean the chamber and bore after every round for the first 25 rounds, then every 10 rounds up to 100 rounds. It usually takes about 200 rounds per barrel for optimum accuracy. Please keep in mind that our barrels are production barrels, not custom barrels. Accuracy is dependent upon many factors such as bullet weight, powder load, rifling twist, rifling lands, operator technique, etc. Our production barrels have achieved anywhere from .125" to 1.5" M.O.A.. Obviously, we would hope that every production barrel would shoot .5" M.O.A., but with all of the above factors, we cannot guarantee a specific group size. NOTE: Using reloaded ammunition will void warranty. Modifying chamber or barrel voids warranty. This includes re-reaming of chamber, re-turning barrel to a lesser diameter and/or re-threading barrel for compensator or attachments.

very similar scenario... Said it was signed for; when I called they said the person in #B (I'm #C) signed for it. Mudd's label on box was right.. Fed Ex screwed up. Luckily, lady next door is a good neighbor and simply put it on my back door.

OK looks like we got a shooter here...

I spent near 5 hours today shooting twelve (12) rounds letting Sweets work with shoot cleans, and at the end I see progress.

The barrel's coming clean and groups are touching at 50, and not off the bench but standing against my back door jam and shooting through the rain.

I'm shooting 62gr green tip pulled FMJ with mil surp powder- light loads.

Startin' to get excited about this upper.. :D

Nikon Monarc 5.5x16.5 AO .....:)

Scope rings are 1/2" and to low. I hope 1" rings will work. They should. The upper really looks awesome. The fluting is deep, and is under the handgard also.

Can't wait until the rain quits so I can shoot her at 200-300..

It is a sweet set up, I put a new production ART II scope on mine.
I have never scoped an OLL before, and decided its almost awkward looking through the scope.
Any of you use a riser to use a scope?
I love the rifle, can't wait for it to quit raining.

I use a riser and an extended bolt catch.

More barrel breakin in and out of rain pics.
Barrel sure was rough but has smoother up nicely with 60 rounds so far.

Here's ten shots at 50, without really trying hard, and just using the bullets and powder I have the most of for breakin.

Cleanup is getting quicker with the smoother barrel and with less and less copper fouling. That's the sign of a good barrel... :)

I read a post on a forum where a guy said DPMS barrels arn't worth a damn, and there's a reason why you never see any targets posted. Well here's one for now. 10 shots, one hole-... :D

Need to find a better backdrop/setting...

But, for now; here's the finished product. In addition to the upper/components from the group buy, I've added a Stag lower and the U15 stock offered by California Rifles (http://www.californiarifles.com/)

Due to budget constraints (i.e. out of money) My optics will be an old Simons scope I have. Picking up the new rings this week. Thanks again Mudd for the great buy.

Wow, kinda funny seeing this thread pop up again. Seems like forever since the early Group Buys for Stag and Fulton lowers (2005), then the DPMS uppers (2006-2007). I'm out of the GB's , but thanks again to everyone that participated.
