Hi Guys,

I will be picking up my XD9 in a couple of days and wondering where to buy ammo from. Indoor range that i am member of charges $18 +tax for 50 rounds. and also please let me know which brands are good.

I am new to this, so any help or advise is appreaciated. BTW, i am in the Losangeles area.

thanks

I get my ammo online at http://www.cheaperthandirt.com or http://www.ammunitiontogo.com

For range use, I use Winchester White Box (115 gr. FMJs)-- 50 round box goes for $13-14. IMO, it's great practice ammo.

Does all Walmarts sell Ammo? and what would be the average price?

Most Walmart stores sell ammo. Just call around in your area before you waste trips out there. Expect to spend around $10.50 + tax per box of Federal. A couple of bucks more for WWB. I'd personally stay away from the Remington UMC as there have been quality-control issues with them (quite a few posts about it on here).

Buying factory new ammo in bulk, I like either ammunitiontogo.com for specific ammo, or surplusammo.com for bulk range ammo.

Just bought some Federal 9mm yesterday @ Walmart and they raised their price. It is now $11.97 plus tax. Now the Jack Ross stuff is looking better if they haven't raised their prices.

EDIT:

I just looked over @ Jack Ross and would seem that they have raised their prices too. Now it is $10.95 @ 1000 rounds with free shipping or $11.95 for 50 plus shipping.

Dont worry about WWB, it is cheap quality but it doesnt matter, You wont be able to tell the difference between the expensive stuff and the cheap stuff if your just punching paper at the range. Better yet, buy reloads, theyre even cheaper and usually pretty decent quality.
Price is usually $165 per 1000 rounds so about $8.25 a box

Maybe to YOU. I have several pistols that are stock and in excellent condition. They rarely have a problem, but if they do, its the WWB brand. I CAN tell the difference between the different factory 9mm 115 grain ammo brands.

People are going to give you the above advice based on price over quality. Just because an item is cheap at the counter doesnt mean its the same quality as the others. This pisses me off to no end- people buying items based solely on price and then base their loyalty on and recommendation on such. is- I bought a Yugo car because I am frugal. Everyone- you should buy one too, they are the best.

As for reloads, more BAD advise! When you quality firearm has damage and youre wondering why- remember not to buy reloads again.

Again- I would NOT buy WWB, but thats just me because I love my firearms. And I also refuse to shop at Walmart as well.

Good luck on your ammo, I would go with PMC, Magtech or Remington to kill paper targets.

RWS is bi-metal jacket (steel and copper), with a lead core. Some ranges have issues with them, some don't. It's a crap shoot.

The S&B link is a great deal.

I don't have a WalMart nearby so I buy at Big 5
I bought 9mm Fiocchi FMJs for $14.99/box.
For the Bay Area, that was actually halfway decent as my gunshop sells for $26/box and range sells for $19/box.

The complaints about the UMC mega packs were that some (or a lot) of rounds had set-back issues, where the bullet was pushed down too far into the casing. A few threads on this here if you search for it, along with comparison pics.

Either way, too many quality-control complaints for them. Me personally, I bought a UMC mega pack a couple of years ago just before all of these issues starting coming up. They worked fine, but I don't care about going back to them.

I'd had good luck with Federal (although it's dirty), WWB is ok but expensive so I won't use it, and I like using CCI Blazer Brass or PMC since I can get it cheap in bulk.

Can you expound on why specifically you dislike WWB? I have been using the stuff exclusively for at least 5 years, shooting it through Sig, HK, Glock, etc. I have never had any major problems. In fact, out of many thousands of rounds, I have only had two rounds with a problem. They were both primer failures to ignite.

I'm curious what problems you have experienced.

OP - Just curious. Does your indoor range require "Lead/Mercury Free" primers? The indoor range I frequent won't allow pistol ammo unless it's "Lead/Mercury Free" primers. They stated this was a state law .... They sell their own reloads for: 9mm x 50 for $18 and .45 x 50 for $22. They also sell brand new Remington 9mm Luger UMC FN Enclosed Base 124 Grain Leadless 1100 fps 50 Round Box for $22 and a new box of Remington .45 ACP UMC Leadless Flat Nose Enclosed 230 Grain 835 fps 50 Round Box for $32.

Sorry didn't mean to stray off topic... Cheaper Than Dirt and ammunition to go are good places. But find out if your indoor range has ammunition "requirements" before you order anything that you plan on using at that range.

I have two Glocks (17+19) and two Sigs (226+228). I shoot the Glocks often and used to buy WWB out of convenience. The ONLY time either Glock ever FTF or FTE was with WWB ammo. Can it a spoof or rarity, but BOTH Glocks did this ONLY with WWB. The Sig never did.

Now I know some of you are die hard WWb fanboys. But is that because of the "quality" or just because its the cheapest ammo at Walmart. If you are buying ammo based solely on the cheap factor and then come in here to tell us how awesome it is, I have to say something.

Now if you have ran extensive trails with factory 9mm FMJ ammo and can post some REAL data showing why WWB is better OTHER THAN PRICE, I am all ears/eyes.

Thats why.

I have purchased WWB for the price and because I have never had a problem with it. If there was a problem, I would stop buying it. I don't feel the need to "run trials" with an ammo that I use at the range and for IDPA. Two small failures in thousands of rounds is perfectly acceptable to me. If it fails, oh well. My defensive ammo, however, is another story.

I'm not a "fanboy", I just buy what works for the best price. And you have not provided any REAL data about why WWB is not better.:p

Oh, and I wasn't attacking you. I was trying to gather some real info. Lighten up.

OP, sorry for the jacking. I buy ammo primarily from Palmetto State Armory. Good guys to deal with.:)

Second the Miwall ammo.
Check online for "Cross roads of the West.com". Miwall usually attends their shows.
I have never had a problem with their reloads. Can't say the same for some of the other ammo out there. Try and buy name brand ammo, your XD should shoot just about anything. I would stay away from any steel cased, not as forgiving as brass. IMO
Good Luck

Miwall does seem to be good ammo for reloads and everyone seems to like it. My experience is that it is loaded on the light side. 40 cal in a Sig P226 with new springs had some cycling issues, but got better with some use (once the recoil spring got broken in). Probably a good choice for range ammo if you pick some up at a gun show.

I've had good experience with federal champion 9mm from walmart and American Eagle from Palmetto State Armory.

If you shoot other calibers besides 9mm, reloading is a good consideration. Other than that, walmart is probably your best bet if you plan on only getting a box or two at a time.

Can you post an example of pricing - I'd hate to take time off work to find out it wasnt worth it... Thanks

What do you guys think about the Winchester Super X 147 gr super unleaded? I've been shooting these for a while at the range. Great price, no issues with lead, fully jacketed, nice flat nose for good punch outs....and for less then 200 for a thousand at the gunshows . It's my favorite deal. I usually get from ammo wholesalers ( miwall ) . Last show it was i think 185 for 1000 rounds.

I haven't used any other brands extensively enough to judge. Only one i know that i DON"T like is the regular pmc bronze.

For me, I go to Walmart, then I pick up my brass (and other peoples!) and reload them.

www.turners.com has 9mm on sale frequently.
www.big5sportinggoods.com also has frequent sales on 9mm.
Check the websites for sales and find a store near you.

Wal-Mart has good prices when they have it.

As long as the brand will cycle through your gun, it is probably good enough for range use. Once you are good enough to notice a difference in accuracy with factory ammo, you will figure out what to buy on your own.

I can usually find name-brand FMJ 9mm ammo for approx $10/box or $200/case (20 boxes of 50 rounds), shipped, and that's what I prefer.

$12/box isn't bad for in-store single box new ammo purchases.

$18/box for reloads is aggravating. I suppose it's not insane if you're shooting it in their guns - when I've heard about people having problems with reloads, it's led to firearm damage, not serious injuries to the shooter.

My preference is to not put reloads from unknown entities through my guns. I have done it in the past, tons of people do it without problems - but every now and then there's a problem, and the price difference doesn't justify the risk for me. If I was going to shoot competitively I'd probably learn to reload my own rounds, and find a good way to do my own QC (probably by weighing each round after production?).

You do need to watch the steel/brass case issue if you're shooting somewhere picky, or where they want to reload the brass or sell it to reloaders.

I'd have to like an indoor range a whole lot before I'd let them force me to shoot their reloads at $18 per 50 rounds for 9mm out of my gun. I'd look for a different range if it were me.

http://www.weaponsworld.com/ammunition/pistol-ammunition/9mm-parabellum/rws-9mm-luger-ammunition-124-grain-full-metal-jacket-1000-round-case.html

$190 bucks for 1,000 rounds plus 10 bucks for shipping. Great company to deal with and they are also on Calguns too. You can find them in the commercial section.

I've already purchased about 3,000 rounds from them and never had issues with them in either my Beretta or XD.

Only downside is the bullet head is magnetic and that only matter's if the range cares or not.

...or http://www.ammunitiontogo.com

Is AmmoToGo's website still compromised? About a year ago I bought ammo from that site one time and within 48 hours I was fraudulently subscribed with multiple accounts to match.com, catholicmatch.com, jewishmatch.com, and bought a couple of custom made teddy bears from some place in Florida.

A Google search of the fraudulent charges returned info that AmmoToGo's site security was compromised.

Of course I called my bank and the stolen funds were immediately restored to my account, but I had to get a new card, and we all know what fun that is...

I have had nothing but great success buying bulk ammo from www.ammoman.com .

I usually buy ammo from www.luckygunner.com, 9mm as low as $10-$12. I really like this site because of their active inventory display. Shipping is reasonable and fast. I have only had good experiences with luckygunner.com so far!

I just got my PMC 9mm from surplusammo.com (I saw the rec here at Calguns), I'd recommend them. Ordered on Sat (7/23), received Fri (7/29). For 1000 rounds it was 205 + shipping for $223 total.

Man I found it about to order and out of stock...They have 500rnd still but its 107 so 1000 would be 214+shipping. I will probably wait a couple days and see if it comes back.

It might be a tad dirtier, but it feeds, fires and ejects without a single problem though. No issues with UMC or WWB on this end.

Cabela's has a $20 off $150 purchase rebate offer (http://www.cabelas.com/custserv/rebate.jsp?rebateCode=9RD597&WTz_l=Home) going on...you just have to give up an email address for probable incessant spamming. Offer good until Tues., 8/9/2011.

Cabela's also has the Sellier & Bellot 9mm Luger 115 Grain FMJ (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Shooting/Ammunition/Handgun-Ammunition|/pc/104792580/c/104691780/sc/104372280/Sellier-Bellot-Handgun-Ammo/706475.uts?WTz_l=SBC%3BMMcat104792580%3Bcat1046917 80%3Bcat104372280) on sale for $9.99/box o' fiddy.

I got in for 15 boxes (750 rds):

Merch: $149.85
S/H: $14.95
Rebate: -$20.00
Total Cost: $144.80 (or $9.65/box or $0.193/rd)

I also clicked through Cabela's 3% cash back link on FatWallet.com (for those of you subscribed to FW), and may get another ~$4.35 back...to be confirmed.

Not a jaw-droppingly good deal, but the hole in my wallet is a little smaller than what it would have been if I paid full retail price :p

They don't appear to be magnetic. I've tested them with a strong neodymium magnet (harvested from a dead hard drive), and nothing stuck. Also, one of the counter staff at the indoor firing range I frequent tested them as well, and I got the thumbs up to use.

BTW, I bought a 1K case from surplusammo.com, and they are the cheapest I found outside of the Cabela's deal I posted earlier. I did have a few dented boxes, and one of them was missing a round, FWIW. I'm 500 rds deep into the case, and so far shoots just fine.

S&B 9mm 115 gr FMJ purchase @ surplusammo.com :

Merch: $184.99
S/H: $18.02
Total: $203.01 (or $10.15/box o' fiddy, or $0.203/rd)

Ok, I ended up ordering the Surplusammo.com deal since it says brass cased on there and on cabelas it doesnt say that. Apparently S&B makes both steel cased(coated to look like brass) and brass, for $0.006 a round more I rather be sure.

Thanks for the heads up
