I think im going to take a stab at it, but is building a cali legal AK really as simple as most calgunners make it out to be?

If an AR15 build would rate a 1 on a 1-10 scale and a 1919A4 a 10, then I guess most would rate an AK47 build a 5. I haven't even finished my first oll build yet and already Im aching to have one of these ak's. Curse you calguns!!!

Anyhow, A romy kit can be had for a little over a bill, and the nds3 for about the same. Is that pretty much it for the build???

What are the disadvantages of going with a screw build and do I still have to play the 922r game??

I sent this to a GN'er in the past who had some questions.

If you don't have the tools or anyone in your area who can build it for you, you could do a screw build. You could buy a Romy G parts kit and send it to one of these guys below. They will demill the kit and tap the trunnions. When you get it back from him, you can put it back together using simple hand tool. Some filing may be needed. Everything that has rivits originally will now have screws (front and rear trunnions and trigger guard).

This guy is a local on the AKFILES.com

He sells the screw kits, trigger guard screw plate and he will demill the kit/ tap the holes also. I may have him do some work for me in the future if I plan on doing any more.

The receivers that are the easiest to use are the NDS-3 from NoDakSpud.com.

You will need to follow 922r which basically means you can not have anymore that 10 imported parts on a rifle. So you will need to find 6 US compliance parts. The receiver is 1, Tapco single hook G2 FCG is 3, US slant brake is 1, Tapco mag follower is 1. Monsterman grip is also 1 if you plan on using one. Please do some research and understand 922r.

You will also need the red star arms pin retainer. This keeps the pins in the holes. You can also use e-clips but I have never used them.

This is just my opinion on what you could do if you did not have the tools to build one. I hope this helps.
