Just want to let everyone know that there is going to be an Appleseed shoot at A Place to Shoot on Feb. 17-18. I believe this is the first Appleseed event in CA. Should be fun for our new gripless builds or any other rifle.

Event Schedule:

For those that don't know what this is, here is more info. I've never been to one of these events myself, so I can't personally answer any questions you might have. I just thought I'd pass this information along.

If you go, bring fliers (you can find 'em in my sig). There's probably going to be a lot of those folks who haven't heard about OLL's at all!

The only thing that would be better is if they added the U.N. shoot. I am not sure if they still do that though:confused:

I'll be sure to bring a few of those fliers.

I haven't heard of the UN shoot. What's that?

They used to set up a truck, painted like a U.N. vehicle and place dummies around it wearing U.N. helmets. Then, you guessed it, open fire until there is pretty much nothing left. Kind of a training exercise in case the U.N. ever tries to infringe on the sovereignty of the U.S. I wish I had gone to one, sounds like fun.

I signed up for the shoot, it is at the range I usually shoot at in Saugus.

I wondered that too. I guess you are "just supposed to know" what an Appleseed shoot is?

I clicked around and found a FAQ: http://www.rwva.org/yabbse/index.php?topic=605.new

It screams "Fred's M-14 stocks" you know, the guy who writes those weird but humorous articles in Shotgun News.

Sorry about that. I assumed most knew what the shoot was because I remember a few threads trying to gauge the interest in a shoot here in CA.

I didn't really know much about this shoot until someone at a range told me about it and I looked up the info. It's a type of clinic teaching rifle marksmanship.

Here's some more info I found regarding it.

I would suggest that everyone living in the area goes, it's a good way to show support for what it is we do here and a chance to expose others to firearms and shooting(bring friends).

If you want to know more about what it is,then open up any Shotgun News and turn to FRED'S section(he sells M-14 stocks), he rants and raves and prods people in the purpose of marksmanship and he helps put on the Appleseed shoots. I guess they have had some pretty big turn outs in other states.

Never heard of "Saugus" CA.

Unfortunately, it is right outside of LA and I'm way further north. :(

Any plans for one up in central or northern CA??

Saugus is part of Santa Clarita, near the 6 flags amusement park. The range is just inside the ANF.

There's no event listed for Saugus, CA, in February. Was it cancelled - again?

There is one scheduled for March 8 & 9th in Corona, CA which is a little closer for me.
And one in Piru, CA(which is near Magic Mtn) on April 19 & 20.

I hope to make one of these, the one I went to in AZ was pretty good.

The feb one was canceled because the organization didn't do its homework ahead of time, and thought it would get in trouble for laws pertaining to militias *rolls eyes*.

After that fiasco, and some other info that I got from some of their members, its pretty clear to me that they don't have their stuff together.

Appleseed is a grassroots organization. Its success depends on the efforts of members in organizing at their home range. If you sign up and pay for a shoot and it is canceled you can attend a different shoot. My understanding is that the one scheduled for last year in California was canceled because organizers did get the impression that the DA considered it an outlawed militia activity. Appleseed is being held in California in March and April, and the organizers have chosen sites to avoid the types of problems encounted last year in LA county.

What do you get at an Appleseed?

1. A large does of the events of April 19, 1775 when common folk rose up against the standing army of the greatest empire of the world leading to the freedoms and life that we enjoy today.

2. The objective is to raise awareness of our cultural heritage and our constitutional protections through a fun shooting activity. It is hardly militia training, but an opportunity to learn the basics of a) the three basic shooting positions, b) bone-to-bone-ground support, c) natural point of aim, d) breathing, e) trigger control, and f) calling the shot, all to improve shooting proficiency.

2b. You learn how to site your rifle intellegently using only a few shots, and knowledge about minutes of angle and distance etc. No more boxes of ammo to site in your rifle.

3. You drill your shooting standing for a few shots and then dropping to either sitting or prone position. The course of fire includes magazine changes. All shots are rapid fire, but it is controlled cadence based on breathing, about a shot per second or two when you are in the groove.

4. When I attended an Appleseed last year in Oregon we did not shoot the U.N. targets, but we did shoot the Red Coats with 100, 200, 300 and 400 yd silhouettes and a 250 "officer head shoot" as the Patriots did more than 300 years ago.

5. Army Qualification style targets are used too with the objective of scoring expert or rifleman by the end of the weekend. I didn't quite make rifleman, but shot high sharpshooter, which in the Appleseed program is high cook.

6. At the event I attended people were shooting an AK47, numerous M1a/M14, a Fal, several Garands, a FAL, and some Liberty 10/22. Everyone was shooting with iron sites, though they say they'll take you with your scopes and electronic sites. At the end of the weekend I had gone through two South African battle packs.

It was a great experience with great folks. I learned a lot, and plan to do it again to gain rifleman status. It is inexpensive and IMO the experience was well worth the cost. I was signed up for the March event, but unfortunately I am recovering from knee surgery. I hope to make the April 19 event, which is held on one of the most important dates in our Nation's history.
If I don't recover in time for that then I plan on attending one in either Oregon, Nevada or Arizona.

.

When one of the volunteers organizes one. It is grassroots, and relys on the efforts of local members to organize. To be an organizer one would have to be affiliated with a local club in order to make a pitch to the associated range to host an event.

Fred would tell you that only you can make it happen. :D
If you know of a good spot, pitch it to the range or club and see if they would allow it there.
