are ther any advantages of havin a monolithic upper? other than colt, are ther any other brands out there?

Mega, LMT both make monolithic uppers. VLTOR makes one, but its not a "true" monolithic, because its actually starts life as two pieces that are forged together to creat a one piece.

they offer you the ability to mount optics anywhere without fear of zeroing issues that may be associated with FF and non-FF handguards. They are usually heavy though. They are also limited in length.

IMO, i'd go with a Daniel Defense LITE rail. you can choose whatever length you want, and they're some of the lightest & strongest rails on the market.

Noveske makes one but they use Vltor's which is *****in but yeah they are heavy, if you don't care about weight and money go for it!
