View Full Version : What BCG?

I am building up my first AR15 and I ordered the BCM 16 mid-length upper. They are out of their BCG Assembly on the website and said it will be 4 to 6 weeks until they get them back in stock. My main question is do you really need to use the same BCG as the upper and barrel. I went into a store this week and talked to the guy who said that you should not just buy any BCG Assembly, that I should get the one that was "headspaced for the gun" and if it not correct "it could blow up"? They did not have any BCGs to sell as well, so it was not like he was trying to sell me something he had. Does it matter what I put in? Any recommendations?

Palmetto State has a great deal on complete BCGs.

Premium for $99.95
Standard for $89.95.

+1 to Palmetto. If you read the specs they are the same as BCM.

Most rifles need their headspace checked before swapping barrels and bolts. Basically AR15 bolts are made to spec and the barrels headspace is set at the factory. A well made, used, but not abused bolt and/or barrel should headspace correctly. I had a 1970's 604 barrel that headspaced just fine with a new bolt.

Unless were talking about complete rifles or complete uppers I think most people mix and match parts. I know I do. Besides Young MFG and Fail Zero, two popular BCG makers don't produce complete uppers nor rifles.

So as long as both parts are new I should not have any problem getting any other BCG?

I just dropped $500 on palmeto parts...
We will see how they stack up against my others.
I'm sure they are all made equal.

No, you dont need to use the same brand across your weapon. This is where "Milspec" comes into play and, in a nutshell, this means that all the brands follow certain tolerances, sizes, proportions, etc. Of course, their chosen materials and quality can/does vary.. but mixing and matching parts/brands is 100% common.

Hell, I have a Vltor upper on a RAA lower with a LMT BCG, etc. etc. This is the beauty is that you can pick your brand of upper, lower, LPK, grip, hand guards, sights, etc that YOU like/want.

And on top of this, parts don't even have to be "new"... you could use a used/new BCG in a new/used upper and so on.

PSA and BCM bcg's have the same specs. I wonder who makes the PSA bcg.

I'd go with a full auto BCG if I was to replace mine or build a new rifle. I'd probably have it coated with NiB as well.

Be patient grasshopper! Go to BCM website and let them notify you when their BCG is available. Most of the time when its available you got 4 hours window to purchase.
