View Full Version : Put the roll pin in the wrong hole

and chaos ensued.

When I was building my newest build (my 2nd one from scratch) today I made the unfortunate mistake of sticking the roll pin in the wrong trigger guard hole. I didn't realize that it was in the wrong hole at first. I tapped at it with my punch, then more, then more, and then the end of my punch broke off inside the roll pin. I figured eff it, I''ll ground off the end of the roll pin (sticking half way out) so I went to screw the other end in when I realized that I had stuck the roll pin in the wrong hole and it was filled with the end of a hardened steel punch. I tried to drill it out and broke 3 bits in the process. I couldn't get a pair of pliers around it to pull it out so I cussed a lot. I finally was able to get a hold of it with a pair of side cutters and I twisted it out. The lower and trigger guard are all beat up, but I finally got it all together.

I was also reminded of how much detent pins like to fly through the air and go missing, glad I had an extra lpk sitting around. Well that's my story for the day.

No problem bacon. Now you know which AR is gonna be your "beater" rifle.
You will have more fun with this rifle. No, "oh be careful, don't scratch it" talk when you let your friends shoot it.
You have now given yourself permission to abuse your rifle.

There's always trouble when you put it in the wrong hole.

Kind of beat up.

The tip of my punch is still stuck in there.

But here she is, palmetto state lower and upper. The upper is kind of different in that it has a carbine length gas system but has rifle hand guards. 100% palmetto state armory gun.
I actually wasn't in a rush, the pins fit much nicer in this lower versus in the mega lower I built last time.

You should have taken a dremel to it and cut out the trigger guard and then cut off the roll pin from in between the "ears", and then it would have been an easy matter to just punch what was left through. Some AlumaHyde would do wonders from hiding all the scaring you have there.

I did the same thing. I still can't shake that shameful feeling.

If I ever mess up like that again I will get a dremel on it. I'm probably the only person in the world without a dremel.

I made the same mistake too, plus it took part of my punch pin with it.

Luckily my upper receiver came with an extra pin and I was able to file down some of it.:) Its not going to be a safe queen for sure.

I never kept those who let me put my roll pin in the wrong hole, I know what kind of lower receivers they are. Probably let anyone come along and stick their roll pin in there.

Sent from my ADR6400L using TapatalkIf you mean tighter fit, then I say you are right. I put together my lower with no struggle at all....and this Mega Billet didn't require installing trigger guard from the LPK as it was integrated.;)

Though the pins didn't take much pounding in...it is still solid.

^well I change the oil and rotate the tires but the nuts and bolts are bigger on my car than on the gun, easier for me to visually id :D

How about this touchup pen for the lower receiver hinge area?

On an AR, if you have that much difficulty, you are doing it wrong.

Next time ask yourself: "am I doing this right?" before you force anything too hard.

With other things, it can be OK to force it in to the wrong hole unless she says no.

I would just sand down those rough edges on the trigger guard then shoot away. Beater guns are way more fun than safe queens anyways.

If I would have done that on my first build, I never would have finished; everything was extremely tight.

It's always tight the first time.

At least you can use the rifle like a tool now and not worry about it. I'd do a rattle can job on it and use the hell out of it, they look better that way anyhow.
