Updated the 870's recently. Had the chance to shoot a couple of different pistol grip stocks and liked the basic SpeedFeed best. I had a hard time getting a good fit with some of the adjustable types. Put the IV-S stock on both guns.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k158/mrbieler/870setup.jpg

Both are older Wingmasters. The one of the left is an old PD gun refinished. Lengthened forcing cone, tritium front bead, Surefire rail forearm with LaRue LED light. The one on the right is a 1950/1951 Wingmaster with a 1960's 20" rifle sighted barrel. Hogue forearm. Lengthened forcing cone there too. Both have Wilsons +1 extensions.

I think it is a stand off device. Keeps your muzzle off the target while you blow it to smithereens and not blow up your barrel. Or its used as an aggressive end to jab into an intruder. Or its just for looks.

My 1906 (ser# 205xxx) Hunter Arms Co LC Smith 12ga Dbl Bbl shotgun. It is Grade No. 0, 30" Damascus barrels with automatic ejectors, walnut stock and all pieces have matching serial numbers. New, this shotgun cost $48.00 and there were only 6607 made in this configuration out of a total run of 22860 No. 0 shotguns, made between 1898 and 1913.

The forend is a promag along with the promag vertical grip. It's plastic, but very solid. I had my eye on the surefire rail, but I've already spent too much. I thought this was reasonable replacement for the plastic OEM stock. It's cool that it works for both sizes- you just mount the adapter piece for the longer variety forends.

Is your bolt chrome? If so, did you polish it or buy a wingmaster bolt?

jmc45
03-27-2009, 1:16 PM
I believe the bolt is chrome and from a Wingmaster. I purchased the bolt, triggerplate, slide assembly and stock set separately from either Gunbroker or eBay. All said the parts were taken from an old Police model/Wingmaster.
Test fired it last weekend. Everything seems to work well together.

Haha, we have almost the exact same gun. :) I just love the 870P walnuts...I think it's absolutely classic for an 870.

I'd like to buy another 870 Express to make into a "tactical" look though; I liked the Speedfeed pistol grip stock I used to have.

Interesting. I had never heard of the flex-tab. I assume it's the squared "U" shaped cut out i see on the lifter. I just re-created that jam in the video and was able to clear it. Phew! that's something i would have definitely overlooked.

Got my new Interstate Model 982 today. Took alot of grinding and filing on the fore end so the heat shield wouldnt rub. Cant use the 6 shell holder I got because the for end overlaps it by1 inch.

Modified the rem spacer to get it closer the the trigger area, closing in the ugly gap between the trigger and pistol grip. Really like the flat finish it has.

Hey thanks,

Its a 1720 Pelican but with the "Closed Cell Polyethylene Bottom Foam/Padding", which wont absorb gun oils and cuts MUCH easier (and accurately) for custom work. It costs a bit more $, but IMHO is worth it if your going to customize.

is that an express? which mesa 8-shell holder did you use? is it the one with the rail? can you please show pics of the other side? is it mounted on the receiver or on the mesa adaptor? does the 8 shell interfere with the pump action of the fore end? i'm thinking about getting an 8 shell holder but i have a knoxx retractable stock, i wonder if it will be too long. makes me wanna settle with the 6 shell holder instead

Sorry I don't have a pic of the other side on hand. That is the 8 round with rail, it wraps around the other side and slides over the receiver like an "n" shape. New pins are pushed through both sides of the n rail system, and then screws are put into the pins to hold everything in place.

The 8 shell ends right at the start of the receiver, so if there is *ANY* overlap from the forend, then it will hit the mesa side saddle. Thus why I have the Speedfeed tactical forend, because that forend does not overlap at all.

and yes, it's an 870 express.

Spent a little bit switching my 870 up yesterday. It's an 870 Express Magnum 12 gauge.

Went from this: 870P walnut stock and fore-end.

http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o52/krank27/rem-870Pwalnuts.jpg

To this: Went back to the Speedfeed IV-s pistol grip stock and fore-end. Also added Mesa Tactical barrel clamp, Surefire light, GG&G front sling adaptor mount plate, and Uncle Mike's swivel stud and swivel. Looking for a remote pressure switch now for the Surefire.

Thank you so much for the pics. I was deciding between the mesa 6 shell holder with rail and the mesa 6 shell holder on the left side/4 shell holder on the right combo. But because of the forend that came with the stock that I bought, I might settle for the 4 shell holder on each side 'coz I'm afraid the 6 shell holder will hit the forend. This is a pic of the forend that I bought(pic courtesy of AIP Tactical):

http://i384.photobucket.com/albums/oo289/waway233/forend.jpg

What do you guys think, will a 6 shell holder from Mesa Tactical interfere with the pump action?

My Mossberg 500 from Big5. The combo deal.

Got tired of the black on black look so bought some wood furniture from ebay, bought a action tube from Havlin Sales (http://www.havlinsales.com/) and I was in business!

The wood does match, the flash makes the forend look lighter but really they are the same. I love the new look. Top is original, bottom is now with wood.

It came out of the box with the shorter forend, mag extension and front sling swivel. As far as I'm concerned it's good to go, although I may add a tritium or fiber optic bead up front.

Now think about this for a minute Guys.... This is exactly something I am contemplating here. This weapon has a rifled barrel and a scope. Remington is putting out a sabot slug for exactly this kind of a setup that is said to be extremely accurate out to 200 yds. Thats a .58 caliber projectile being pushed there. Consider this as a lesser alternative for us here in California that have been prevented from legally possessing a .50 BMG by our beloved (yuk) legislators. Your thoughts? Or am I missing something?

The ballistics and accuracy on them are so different it isn't even comparable. You'd get more out of just about any .30 or larger rifle cartridge in terms of accuracy and energy.

Got a few shotguns... this one is my "old school". Not to be taken lightly, this little coach gun can be a formidible defense tool.

http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/zmonki/Shotguns%20and%20RIfles/CoachGunRig.jpg

Where I live (Washington State) licensed concealed carry of handguns is fairly common, so a pistol goes everywhere with me. And while modern pump shotguns are my primary shotguns when at home, when I travel, they're really a bit much to bring along. But instead of just taking a pistol or two (as I used to do) I've taken to bringing this along as well. My thinking is that a 12 gauge coach gun makes a great motel gun and along with a pistol, can be a lot more effective and decisive than just a pistol alone.

Push one button and the forearm is off; push the action lever and the barrel swings down and lifts off... voila... 2.2 seconds and the gun is reduced to 20".
http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/zmonki/Shotguns%20and%20RIfles/CoachGunTakenDown.jpg

A $9 padded 22" tripod bag makes a perfect non-tactical, totally discreet coach gun case!
http://i397.photobucket.com/albums/pp59/zmonki/Shotguns%20and%20RIfles/P1000606.jpg

And off we go.

"What's in the bag?"

"Oh... that's my tripod!" ;)

Awesome! I picked up a gloss and wood grain 8 shot 1300 Defender from an Out Door World for $200 20 years ago back when Ca. was cash and carry for long guns. Sadly it was stolen a year later but the finest shotgun I have ever owned or fired still to this day. The long butt stock fits my lanky arm length like a glove.I think this just made my must have list right behind the Ruger LCP I am still on the look out for.

That bird grip handle looks sweet as well but I already have a Mossy pistol grip in the safe and local ranges don't allow them.

I have been looking for a similar rail system for my Mossy 930SPX semi-auto (just because) with no luck. All after market pieces seem to be based around the 500 pump which are more prolific. Any one got any leads on rail systems or other cool 930 stuff please respond here or drop me a P.M. I may pick up an 870 just to get that cool rail :-). I love going to the range and cleaning clays for a few hours with my beat up tacti-fool 930 while guys with $2K. polished or camo jobbers with matching dufus hunting gear on can't seem to shoot their own foot without a map. I ignore rude stares alot .

*sigh* my must have list just got a little longer.

M4 w/ KZ forend and KZ charging lever... still researching a magazine tube extension (want to stay legal) and which small light to mount on the front. The weapon is already heavy.. trying not to add much more.

Guess it's time I updated a bit.... here are some recent additions and an old standby that's been given some new wood furniture.

I'm really enjoying my new discovery of 1300's! These are some awesome guns indeed.

Beautiful 1300's. I've owned two 870's now and I'm looking at picking up at 1300. The 870's are workhorses but the 1300's just seem like they have more "style" behind them. Can't exactly put my finger on it.

MarioS.... you should definitely go forth and acquire a 1300, especially an 8-shot Defender. They stopped making the gun about 4 years ago, I believe, and I have found three on GunBroker recently that I bought, one still brand-NIB, the other two very close to like-new in cherry condition. Paid about $315, $320, $299 for them. And I just found another for a friend who decided it would be the perfect HD gun for them... on Gunbroker, like new, for $320.

I love a good 870 and a good 500 and a good 590, and I have them! They're awesome guns and I would depend on any of them if I needed to.

But there isn't another pump gun in the world I would prefer to this, which is my go-to, bump-in-the-night shotgun. 8 rounds of 12 gauge goodness on tap before a reload, one-piece mag tube (no extensions), 18" barrel, short LOP stock, E-series LED weapon light on a CDMGear MOD-C bracket. S.w.e.e.t.

Needs more S&W revolver action with it and it would be perfect! I am glad you decided to leave it stock though I think it does need a good leather sling.

Forgive me for I cannot resist... the 586/581 Smiths are among my most cherished revolvers... here's one of my 581's:

The skeet range I visit only allows one round in the chamber and people sometimes get pissy if you take too long to load (I usually shoot with 1 friend and 3 strangers). Since almost everything I own is semi or pump, I decided to get a couple more singles for the collection. Cheapies, but I like em.

Russian Baikal 12 on the left.
H&R 20 on the right.

A few weeks ago I bought a Remington 870 HD from Impact Guns in Utah and had it shipped to my FFL in Benbrook, Texas. By the way, it was a $10 transfer fee at Cash Advance Pawn in Benbrook, the cheapest I could find and the people there were great, so take note. I ended up paying $315.99 with free shipping to my FFL. With the $10 transfer free and a Remington $30 rebate my total cost will be $295.99. I checked local for a long time and visited many gun shops in my area. The best price I could get on the HD was $339 plus tax. I know there are 870's for less but I wanted mag tube extension and I'm happy with my purchase. Impact Guns sent the item with a nice email trail letting me know the whole process along the way.
Anyway, The Remington 870 HD has changed quite a bit since the last time I was looking at them live and I'm going to do a review on it another time. It comes with a sythetic stock, which I dropped in favor of a Speedfeed Birds head that I like. I also ditched the mag clamp in favor of my BMT clamp and saved about .4oz in the process. I also added another BMT clamp at the back of the extension and added a TLR-1s on one side and a QD-PB sling mount on the other. I then added a sling from Rocky Mountain Tactical. These are first grade slings and I have 3 options to disconnect if I get hung up. I'm still playing with the configuration on this but right now it's just a simple 2 point because I simple wanted it o the gun now. It is held on at the stock by a GG&G rear sling plate. I've been using a friends 20" model but this 18 1/2" model makes a big difference and I like the smaller size a lot. So much so I may even a consider going SBS at some time in the future. Here's a couple of quick pics. Later on this will be going to J.D. at AI&P tactical for his build.

Thanks guys, or at least some of you.

coy80176: that's a nice Stoeger and a great stock set up with that adjustable comb. Is that a custom deal?

j.primo: I like the birds head grip compared to other pgo's. I'm more of a fan of point shooting and shooting from the hip with that setup is nice for me with that grip.
