View Full Version : Prayer request for one of my deputies.....UPDATE post #79
06-28-2011, 12:20 PM
On the evening of Friday, June 24 while at work my men and I responded to a residence regarding a domestic disturbance. In order to keep the story compact, the husband assaulted his wife by punching her on her face several times, bloodied her nose, blackened an eye and broke two of her teeth out of her mouth.
Needless to say his bi-polar self was not a happy person when we arrived and we ended up having to use force against him to to take him into custody. As we were placing him into a patrol unit he began kicking my deputies and we had to again use force against him to hobble his feet and legs to stop the assault upon us. We got him into the rear of the patrol car and all was good.
We were standing adjacent to the patrol car taking inventory of ourselves when I noticed one of my deputies slightly bent over and had a blank stare on his face. I asked him if he was ok and he did not answer. I called him by name and asked if he got kicked in the groin by the suspect. He looked up at me and his eyes immediately rolled back into his head, he tensed up and started falling. Luckily, two of my other deputies were standing next to him and they were able to break his fall to the ground. Once on the ground he began shaking violently and would not repond to us. One of my deps immediately called for EMS for a deputy down.
He had all of the symptoms of a seizure and we controlled him the best we could. After about 45 seconds (seemed like a lifetime) he stopped shaking and was still unresponsive to us. After about 30-45 more seconds he came to and had no idea where he was or what had happened. EMS arrived shortly thereafter and tranported him to the best local hospital.
After several hours of testing at the hospital it was determined he has a large 11 centimeter cyst on his brain that was causing enough pressure to cause the seizure. The cyst has also caused the center line of his brain to be pushed off center by 1-1.5 centimeters. He has absolutely no history of illnesses and most certainly no history or symptoms of anything such as a brain tumor. After further testing today, the neurologist will be doing surgery to remove the cyst and evaluate if there is any permanent injury to his brain first thing Thursday morning.
He is my top shelf and 'go to' deputyon my shift. When I need a sensitive issued handled he is my choice because I know he can get it done right. His coworkers idolize him and go to him before they have to come to me with a concern. His peers, myself and our bosses are understandably upset at this series of events. I have experienced many things in my long career but these kinds of things are a real punch in the gut.
Due to HIPAA concerns I cannot give his name or all of the detailed info but I would ask this....if you are so inclined, please say a prayer for him, his family and his coworkers.
Wow, hope he pulls through this without any problems, I will keep him in my prayers.

I'm taken aback by the kind and thoughful responses here, through PMs and e-mails. Thanks to all of you, and I have sent this link to him. It truly means a lot to me (and I am sure to him as well) that perfect strangers are so willing to say a prayer and offer up kind thoughts and encouraging words.
It's probably going to be a tough road to recovery but if anyone can get to the desired result it would be him. He is a tough guy with the right perspectives and we have to have confidence in the medical profession to get it done right. Something of this magnitude certainly has an effect on his peers.
Tomorrow night when our team sits down for our first briefing without him there a void in our shift will be present.
Our department and association has programs in place for these types of occurrences. If I feel, at some point, we need to ask for any donations or whatnot for him you can rest assured I'll be calling of the good folks here at CGN.
Thanks again to everyone and I'll keep this thread updated.

06-29-2011, 10:09 PM
Thanks again all. I talked to him this evening and surgery is confirmeded for 07:30am tomorrow, 06-30-11. He is obviously nervous about the surgery but after several conversations with his neuro doctor he feels a little better about it. He said he still can't help but have the jitters about it all and, understandably so.
The neuro told him the surgery will take between 10-14 hours if all goes well. He'll be in ICU for a couple days afterward with no visitors. All of us here at the station and many of you all as well are praying for a positive result.
06-29-2011, 10:13 PM
Prayers sent from his public safety brothers at the South San Francisco Fire Department.
06-30-2011, 1:23 AM
A prayer before his surgery being sent.
06-30-2011, 10:35 PM
The surgery was supposed to take place at 0730hrs this morning. It got delayed until the afternoon and got started at about 1400hrs. The surgery was slated to take at least 8 hours and I got a text from his sister at about 1830hrs that said the surgery had taken place, had went well and much faster than expected.
He is still in recovery and will be on his way to ICU shortly. The long term prognosis is still unknown as of this posting. Hopefully we will have a better idea of that sometime tomorrow.
So far, so good and I ask that you all keep him and his family in your prayers.

My thoughts are with your friend and his family as he recovers from this medical emergency.
CSA, my thoughts are with your sister and your family at this time also.
07-01-2011, 12:38 AM
Sounds like good news so far. Prayers continued.
07-01-2011, 3:07 AM
Very good news...
Thoughts and prayers still going out.
Not to Hijack, but I had the EXACT same thing happen to a co-worker of mine the 1st week of December, who had 37 years on the job. I work process control in a refinery, and we had a major upset/emergency at 05:00 when we took over, followed by a hazardous gas leak at maybe 09:30. No one was hurt. After we finally slowed down at ~10:30, he said; "what could possibly go wrong now"... Maybe 20 minutes later he had a seizure. I thought he had died. He too, is close to retiring.
After all of the MRI's, scans & testing, no problems were found. He just returned to work a couple days prior to your incident...
May your deputy make a full, quick recovery.
07-01-2011, 9:31 AM
+1 Prayers that he is back out there doing the Lord's work in no time.

UPDATE: 07-02-11 / 1700hrs
Just got back from the hospital. His surgery went very well and late yesterday he was moved to a regular room from ICU. That by itself is encouraging!! :D
He is groggy as all heck, able to talk for a few minutes then slips back off into LaLa land!! He said he does not have any pain but IMO even if he did the heavy meds being administered would mask any of it. The prognosis is still unknown and we will have a better idea early next week. Baby steps I guess.
Again, thank you all for your prayers and well wishes so far.
07-02-2011, 4:41 PM
I do not pray, but I wish him and your team the best of luck & hope he has a speedy recovery.
Glad to hear things are looking up.
07-02-2011, 10:39 PM
I just read this thread for the time.
Awful story, and I'm very happy to hear he apparently is doing well in recovery!
T's & P's sent, get well soon Brother!
07-02-2011, 11:33 PM
Will definitely pray for him. This event may have been a blessing in disguise if they can get it out safely. Maybe if this all didn't happen they may have no caught it in time. If they indeed caught it in time.

Sorry to hear about the unfortunate event Ernie, but I'm glad the surgery went well. He will be part of our family prayers. We wish him a speedy recovery.

UPDATE: 07-04-11 / 1800hrs
Just got off the phone with with him and he is going to be released either tonight or tomorrow morning to finish recooperating at home and for eventual physical therapy.
He is being released just 4-4.5 days after having surgery to remove the mass form his brain!! The marvels of modern medicine are simply amazing to me.
Again, I'm so very thankful we were together on the call with him when this happened. The potential for this happening when he was by himself on a call or driving around (or even to and from work) was so great. For this to have happened on the call when there were a couple other of us there is probably a Godsend.
07-04-2011, 5:11 PM
Great news . . . I wish him well.
07-04-2011, 7:37 PM
That is really great news Ernie... we'll keep him and his family in thought and prayer as he continues his recovery. With this kind of progress, and power of prayer, he'll be back to work before you know it.
Modern medicine is just bleeping amazing sometimes.
07-04-2011, 8:41 PM
Great news. God Bless.
07-07-2011, 9:22 PM
Fantastic news Ernie! If he can get this far, he will make it thru PT.
Based on my many experiences with PT over the years, please tell him not to give up even when it seems like he is not making much progress; it will happen. Also and more importantly, please tell him not to compare his progress or the slowness of it to other patients. Everyone is different and progresses at different rates. Furthermore, some patients may be further along since their surgery, so of course they will be further along in their progress.
I say this both as one who lived that experience and observed it.;)
07-14-2011, 8:07 AM
I'll pray for a speedy recovery glad to hear he surgery went good.
07-14-2011, 8:20 AM
Glad to hear that he is doing better hope he can return to work at some point.
07-29-2011, 12:33 PM
07-29-2011, 5:23 PM
Thanks for asking.
It has been a rougher road than what was planned. After the surgery he was told he would have sporatic seizures for a couple weeks and they would stop. Unfortunately, he has continued to have the seizures well beyond that time estimate. The docs treating him are giving conflicting orders and that has caused some confusion and problems as well. They have tried different meds and nothing is seeming to help as of yet.
He is obviously worried about this entire scenario and wants to come back to work. We are continuing to pray for him amd provide him with what he needs. The docs are now apparently working together and hopefully things will progress nicely.
07-29-2011, 5:30 PM
prayer sent. hope all turns out well
07-30-2011, 11:16 AM
My thoughts go out to him for a speedy recovery, thanks for the update. JT
07-30-2011, 11:41 AM
The brain takes a while to heal and re-boot, my wife took at least a few months.
When her tumor was removed, her brain expanded back into the now-open space over the next few weeks, relieving the pressure on her motor center.
There were lots of odd feelings and symtoms during this time.
The drugs, while necessary, have their own side effects that tend to make things seem worse and recovery take longer.
Please tell him to be patient and stay positive.
07-30-2011, 7:32 PM
Thanks for the update Ernie and we all hope he will mend quickly and completely. I will keep him in my thoughts.
07-30-2011, 8:59 PM
Keeping him in my prayers.
Ernie, if there is anything I can do let me know. It a bit of a drive, but I do have time on my hands.
07-30-2011, 10:37 PM
That sounds like a scary experience. Prayers on the way.
07-30-2011, 10:47 PM
Tell him to hang tough Ernie!! He is in our prayers for a full recovery!
