I was thinking about purchase Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22lr over M16 .223 rifle. But I had been lots of resource on Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22 and this rifle have lots of malfunction such as feeding problem. My point is i don't know which rifle I should get for target shooting. Any suggestion.

They had problems early on. If you check out the innards, the recoil spring will be blue which means it's updated. I havent been shooting often recently unfortunatly but after 1,300 rounds, Ive had no problems with the gun itself, just ammo failing to fire. It was my first firearm & the thing is fun as hell =)

p.s. If any problems occur, send it to s&W since you'll have a lifetime warranty.

I'm 6500 rounds into mine without any issues. Just don't use Remington ammo.

If you want a 22lr get a Ruger 10/22.

They are a lot of fun. I have around 2,000 rounds through mine with zero issues. Again a lot of fun. Shoot it everytime I'm out. I use CCI mini mags mainly as they have Bren the best for me.

I love my 15-22. I shot it so much I lost count. I use mostly the cheap federal bulk pack ammo and no issues except for occasional dud.

If you are considering the 15-22 you definitely won't be satisfied with the 10/22. The 10/22 is good but the S&W 15-22 is awsome!

Can you tell me why this is? Just curious. I've been thinking a while about getting one of these tacticool .22lr rifles. They sure look like fun guns!

My wife experienced the same, sold her Ruger 10/22 and replaced it with a SIG522. I have a M&P15-22 and love it. Have put thousands of rounds through it and it works fine except the occasional bad round due to cheap ammo.

Like many others, I also highly recommend the M&P15-22. Active community here: http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-m-p-15-22/

My 15-22 eats the cheapest ammo, NO problems.
It's better than a 10/22 because it works exactly the same as my AR.
I threw a cheap 4 power scope on it, zero'd it at 50 yds. and it's great fun!!

Btw, how many yard can this mp15-22 go?

The Virus

I can hit out at 200 yds, but 100yds is really as far as you wanna go. At 150 yds the bullet really starts to drop. At 200 yds it becomes more of an artillery shot.

So basically your asking buy an .22lr AR style gun, or buy a real .223 AR.

If your new to rifles look into the .22lr. I own several ARs and several 22s. The 22 rifle never stops putting a smile on my face, you basically don't even need hearing protection, and for under 20$ you can have 550 rounds of ammo that will last quite awhile, no recoil, feels like a BB gun that can do damage.

Also the 22 will be a great little gun that will teach you things about shooting. (assuming that your pretty new to these types of guns)

outstanding rifle to own, even if you arent new to rifles (I wasnt when I got mine).

I dont know how many thousands of rounds I have through mine.

Same FCG as a real AR, so you can upgrade it accordingly, and plenty of rail space for all your ninja needs.

I've got a lot of rounds thru my 15-22 without any issues. I love it and it is fun to shoot. I'm going to get another so when I take the family out I will have a better chance to shoot it. :D

you can say that but I had shot .223 once without any scope and i wasn't good at it. But this will be my next rifle in the future.

Pretty cheap at every big 5 I go to, have you looked there? I think under 450$ per usual price. Check out the rimfire section. Lots of good info can be found. From what I've seen, lots of happy customers.

Big 5 has them most of the time (at least the ones around here do) and go on sale. Just go to the manager and tell them to sell it you for the last sale price. Usually they will do it.

BTW, the 15-22 is polymer. Just a heads up. Also, after you buy it, very soon you will get the big brother (.223 version). When I got my Colt M4 .22, I realized I needed the real deal and got me a .223 AR.

+1, hehe ... same here, started out with the 15-22 then the bug bit big time and got a LWRC .223/5.56 and now looking at a REPR 7.62.

My wife initially got a 10/22, then got a SIG522. I'm trying to get her interested in a LaRue Predator .223/5.56 ...

Get the MOE version if you can, the barrel is already threaded.... Otherwise you'll likely be paying to get that done in a few weeks. It's an awesome gun, and the pistol range mafia don't mind it.

I'd still use eye and ear protection indoors :chris:

I'm..not too sure if these are in CA shops or not but there's a non-MOE version that is threaded and comes with the flash hider. That's if they are around and if you want to save $ and don't want all the Magpul furniture. The MOE is really good value on the Magpul parts, though. Typically $50-$80(I think) more from the standard version, the sights alone should be $60.

Yup, 1/2"x 28. It'll take many different flash suppressors.

I had one spare that happened to be standard 1/2-28 thread.

You could go for another thread, depends on what your metal guy will do. I'd stay away from the clip on or pin on muzzle gear, too temporary for me and I've heard stories of stuff just falling off at the range.

Just shot this past weekend, 400 rds with no FTE or FTF. I've shot over 3k rounds with mine and love it.

I also took a rifle class with LMS defense a few months ago and shot almost
1k rds in one day with no issues.

So, who sells the MOE version in the SF bay area? Ideally east bay or tri-valley...?

From what I hear they are good guns. I showed my 10 year old nephew a picture of one and now he wants one instead of a 10/22. Mainly because he wants a rifle that looks like mine. I might make it all tacticool just for him because he likes that stuff.

I'm wired towards self-defense weapons. And 22lr is not a defensive round. So I wouldn't do it. I own a 1970s Remington Targetmaster 22lr single shot bolt action rifle that I inherited and cannot sell for that reason. So I've got all the 22lrs I need.

If I were going to buy a modern 22lr it would be a difficult call between a 10/22 that I could trick out, or a GSG HK Mp5 Clone since the real HKs and clones in defensive calibers get too expensive and too cheesy thanks to goofy long barrels but the GSG 22lr version looks more realistic and is affordable.

There are just too many other guns on the wish list calling my name.

The 15-22 was probably my best purchase this year, mainly because I can take it to the outdoor range or even the indoor pistol ranges when the weathers bad. The only thing I can say I wish it had, would be a dust cover, other then that I cant find anything bad to say about the rifle.

Have you looked at primary arms scopes. They are good quality especially for a 22lr.
