View Full Version : Another muzzle brake thread

So, my rifle (AR) is pretty light, and I'd like to get faster follow-up shots. The A2 hider does nothing for muzzle rise, so I'm looking to get a brake.

KAC Triple Tap seems to be the one with the best reviews, but I'm not spending $430 on a brake. Next on the list is the PWS FSC 556, but it seems to have mixed reviews.

What's a good brake for mixed indoor and outdoor shooting that addresses muzzle rise and will allow for faster follow-up shots?

BattleComp at ~$165?

http://battlecomp.com/store/images/bce2_0bx-1.jpg

I haven't had the chance to test mine out yet but from what I've read and watched it's a good bang for the buck and doesn't have a horrendous concussive blast which should be good for shooting indoors and outdoors with others in close proximity.

PWS is a great break, a bit loud though, but most of em are.

FWIW I just shot my AK with a muzzle break for the first time yesterday and it seemed to work pretty good. I was able to be accurate with all 10 shots at a good speed. It seemed like it had alot less kick. It could be wishful thinking but I did shoot alot more accurate yesterday.

My pws fsc556 is bad ***, you can rapid fire and the muzzle barley rises.

I also bought a rock river arms tactical brake for around 36$ I don't have an upper to install it on yet, but it's one of the best looking brakes, and only cost 35$ which is a bargain. I've seen nothing but good reviews stating it does exactly what it's supposed to do. Hopefully I can get a new upper soon to test it. (all my uppers are perm pinned 14.5)

Got a Rocky, too. Not bad either BUT no BC or PWS. It's a noticable difference. :D

Have never tried the "high end" brakes , but a LeVang comp workes for me , Midway has em' at about 30 bucks + shipping....
no side/up/down blast , sends the sound of the blast out front away from the shooter...
stright back recoil inpulse , just a nice little brake that won't cost big monies and looks kinda cool to.........

Love this break, best I have used..

I have used the rock river the leaving linear and the YAnkee hill and I like the JP the best..

The A2 DOES do something about recoil.... not a whole lot but it DOES. Try firing your rifle without the A2... you might notice it jumps more.

Having said that... KAC, Battlecomp, Griffin, Spikes Dynacomp all essentially do the same thing... they brake, somewhat lower the flash signature, have less concussion than full on brakes... but certainly are not the best at either braking or flash hiding.

If you want an awesome flash hider, choose something else... if you want an awesome brake, choose something else... if you want a good compromise between the two, get one of the above listed brakes.

The JP works very well. Also the Benney Cooley "Rolling Thunder" (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=26977/Product/AR_15_M16_AR_STYLE__308_BENNY_HILL__ROLLING_THUNDE R__COMPENSATOR) works well, but the increased noise is aluded to in the name.

I have the DPMS, and love it. Little to no recoil. I does disrupt your range neighbors though. I have to wear duel hearing protection also. My right ear starts to ring pretty quickly with just the ear muffs.

I love my PWS FSC 556; also got a RRA brake over the weekend over the weekend for another AR but havent had a chance to really test it out yet.

I am hoping the RRA works well for the price. Anyone have any comments on the RRA brake? Ive seen the Nordic Components at the range and also seem good for the money.

I'm in the same boat as you per my post above. I have no uppers to test the RRA. It looks sweet though huh!? In one of my "tactical" magazines there is an AR build that had the RRA brake and they said it worked perfect when testing the gun. For being in the 30$ range I doubt you can go wrong. There's not alot of reviews on it, but the ones I found were all positive.

The Rocky brake ain't to bad and will add some stability to your shots. I mean for the money you paid for it, it ain't bad. It's worth the money you paid for it and maybe a little more. My two cents

I just put a BC on my AR-10 and AR-15. the 10 im not sure on the prior comp but the muzzle rise reduction was very noticeable. The AR-15 had the 556 comp the BC is definitely better.

Also I replaced the flash hider on my Gunsite Scout with the BC, damn that Scout shoots sweet now.

Disagreed! That battle comp without a heavy buffer doesn't do much. Believe me, I have one on a 5lbs AR with a 3oz. rifle buffer and a JP LMOS carrier. The differences between the BC 1.5 to a $5 A2 flash hider was not an efficient differences. I'm sure it will perform different on a heavier built rifle, something around 8+ lbs.

If you want a brake that will help muzzle climb, the DPMS Miculek brake is "REALLY" bang for bucks. You can find those on MidwayUSA.com for under $50. I have one on my AR10 and one on a AR15. They are "in fact" noticeably louder, but yet effective.

Vias has brakes cheaper than Battle Comp. too. Once again, if you don't care about loudness, Vais brand is an awesome brake to consider. Randall "AR15barrels.com" installed one on my Remington 700P 22" .308win, and shooting in crouching position never felt better.

But I'm still going to keep to my Battle Comp. I bought it for my 14.5" AR, and it will stay on there. A great thing about the BC 1.5 is a pre-drilled pin hole. That makes it easier for the smith to pin and weld. For $155.00 from Rainier Arms, the BC is like a Valley Blonde :D

I use the Surefire MB556K on my three gun rifle, but that is so I can suppress it too. It seems to do a pretty good job, but man is it loud, just like the rest.

I recommend the BC or PWS. They are both great brakes. The PWS fsc556 seems to make the recoil a little softer but both do a fantastic job on muzzle flip. The PWS is quite a bit louder though.

I don't know about scare them but it can sure piss some people off at the range if they are sitting right next to you.

Here are some Brownells videos comparing different Hiders. They do a test with no hider, an A2 and then some different commercial brands.

SA, FA and then the same in slow motion.

I ended up going with the VLTOR VC1.

The Michulek brake from DPMS works as well as the more expensive ones I've tried.

I sold my Battlecomp and just put a Michulek brake on everything I own that will accept one. The difference in performance is negligable, and I save $120.

That being said, the Battlecomp looks a lot cooler.

Bogart

This comp has by far been the best performing and is VERY reasonable. http://www.stagarms.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_37&products_id=334

edit: I have this on a 20" hbar ar-15 and it barely moves when I fire it. Works better than the dpms miculek I have on my 16", though that could be the difference in the soft cycling 20 and the harder cycling 16.

The only muzzle device not legal for most people are supressers.

I find that good technique does more for recoil reduction then some fancy brake. Not discounting that some do reduce recoil, but learning how hold your rifle will have even the slightest built person shooting well.
