Pretty solid built shotgun, can't go wrong with it. If it came with a pistol grip and no stock then it is a cruiser model. If it came with a stock then it is a persuader model.

What Just Happened?

I have one and have used it at Steel Madness at Raahauge's. Great firearm.

I just walked into a store and bought a shotgun I know nothing about. Can you tell me everything about it? ;)

Just kidding.

I bought my Mossberg 500 from Big 5 as well. My brother used it in a class and it started dumping rounds out of the loading port; I sent it back to Mossberg and they fixed it under warranty, no problem. Since I bought it it's been through multiple variations (Speedfeed stock with pistol grip, sidesaddle, 3-point sling, factory ghost ring sights); currently it wears a 2-point (traditional) sling, sidesaddle, bead sight with Tru-Glo light pipe, and old-school wood furniture. It's not my favorite shotgun, but it's my favorite shotgun to tinker with.

So you done good.

The model is cruiser/persuader bought mine 6 months ago, so far has been fun to shoot, holds 7 (2and 3/4) shells in the tubular magazine and 1 chambered totaling 8 these are standard size, so far I've shot bird shot for clay shooting and was really fun shot about 200 rounds with no jams, this gun is great for lefty or righty shooters as safety and release is located near trigger and safety is right in the middle, I have also shot some 00 Buck and the recoil felt just about the same as bird shot, this shotgun is very loud so ear protection is a must, the recoil isn't bad as it has a nice rubber recoils pad, if you decide to put a pistil grip there may be potential problems with the safety, but this gun is easily customizable, and the barrel comes off with a couple clicks so it easy to clean, mossberg 500 series is the only shotgun to pass very strict military specs according to mossberg and used by the police, compared to my Remington 890 its awesome.

You know who I wouldn't go to for advice on firearms? A Big 5 employee.

I bought the pistol grip version because I wanted the higher capacity 7+1 -

Then installed a Knox adj stock and a foregrip.

Cleaned my local WalMart out of 3" 00Buck and slugs for a few tactical classes.

Enjoy it...

Mine has been running fine, for over a year, now. I did swap out the factory buttstock, for a top-folding, pistol-grip product, from ATI. Primarily, this was to compensate for the extremely tight quarters, where we used to live. I mean, it was tight in there and that extra length could have very well meant the difference between getting on target, or not getting on target.

No problems to report. Take care of your gun and it will take care of you.

The employees at my local Big 5 store are actually very well educated in the firearms & ammo they sell. Maybe they're the exception, I don't know, but some of them have been to trainings where they get range time, as a part of it.

As the Shotgun Rangemaster for a well known training facility in Nevada for 5 years I used (and still do) a Mossberg 500 ATP8 for 98% of my instructor demonstrations. The idea was to show my students that you didn't need a $$$ Benelli or other semi-auto for self/home defense duties.
It's the gun in my avatar....learn to use it. The money saved by buying this pump gun allows you to spend it on training and ammunition.
A side saddle, white light and you're done.
Good luck and enjoy many years of trouble free shooting.

Is it possible to switch out the tube to get the higher capacity on a 5 shot model?

I have 3 model 500, so you know what I think. you can't use the longer tube with the 5 shot barrel because of where the 'barrel screw' comes off.

To increase the capacity of a 5 shot 500 will require replacing the barrel and magazine tube.

I can't figure out how to post a question so I'm going to reply to this one with a question. I have a Mossberg 500 that I want to give to my brother as a wedding present. What is the easiest way to go about this? As I understand it transfer of a shotgun between brothers still needs to be done at a licensed FFL dealer. However, would it be easier to transfer it to my father then have him transfer it to my brother as this will comply with the CA long gun law and not need to be done at the FFL dealer? Thanks for your input.

i know that this is a year old post but in case anyone is still interested i just this week turned my 6 shooter into a 8 shooter. the total cost from mossberg including a heat shield was $136.45 to so. cal. here is what you will need with part numbers:

20 inch 8 shot barrel. part#6425 $67.00
magtube 8 shot. part#10345 $25.00
mag spring 8 shot. part#6421 @3.50 and if you want to also add the heat shield....
M500/590heat shield. part#95065 $30.00

now the only drawback is it took me 6 weeks to get the barrel as they have to custom make it for you. but even after waiting 6 weeks i am very satisfied with the results. now i can switch from a 8 shooter back to a 6 shooter with ease. will try to post some pic's later in both config's. HTH

To increase the capacity of a 5 shot 500 will require replacing the barrel and magazine tube.

Keep the barrel, move the take down lug forward. Get a 7 shot tube and cut it down by 1. Gives you a 18" barrel with 6+1 capacity, plus its different than most Mossberg 500's
