1. Brady Campaign and CA Chapters Work to Stop Mexico Gun Trafficking
In recent years, the escalating drug cartel violence in Mexico has claimed tens of thousands of lives, fueled in part by thousands of guns illegally trafficked from the United States. California’s stricter gun laws help to stem the flow of illegal guns, and AB 809 would facilitate quicker and more successful long gun traces and expose U.S.-to-Mexico gun trafficking channels. However, guns are still pouring across the border from Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. Congress must act to close the Gun Show Loophole!

Take Action!
At the federal level, Congress needs to pass H.R. 591 -- Gun Show Loophole Closing Act of 2011. Contact your Congressional Representative and ask him/her to co-sign H.R. 591. Determine your Representative here: http://www.house.gov/zip/ZIP2Rep.html

At the state level, AB 809 will track help trace illegally trafficked long guns. Contact your State Senator and ask him/her to vote “Aye” on AB 809 in the Senate. AB 809 would facilitate quicker and more successful long gun traces and expose U.S.-to-Mexico gun trafficking channels. Determine your State Senator here: http://192.234.213.69/smapsearch/framepage.asp

2. Al-Qaeda to American Jihadists: “America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms ...so what are you waiting for?”
Al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn released a disturbing video encouraging American jihadists to arm themselves at local gun shows, where a jihadist could purchase firearm “without a background check, and most likely without having to show an identification card.” Unfortunately, he’s right. Terrorists know how easy it is to exploit wide-open gaps in U.S. gun laws.

See Al-Qaeda video here: http://www.fixgunchecks.org/al-qaeda

Ask Dan Lungren Why He Voted to Allow Terrorists to Buy Guns!
CALL REP. LUNGREN: ASK WHY HE VOTED TO ALLOW TERRORISTS TO BUY GUNS? (Call his DC office at 202-225-5716)

Rep. Dan. Lungren (CA-3) joined a majority on the House Judiciary Committee to vote down an amendment to the Patriot Act, offered by Illinois Rep. Mike Quigley, to close the "Terror Gap." The Quigley Amendment would have given the U.S. Attorney General authority to prevent gun sales to known or suspected terrorists. Dan Lungren is on the wrong side in the war on terror, which remains a huge threat despite the demise of Osama bin Laden.

3. Attention Parents of High School Students Shopping for Colleges: See “Armed Campuses” Website
http://armedcampuses.org/
We all want our high school students to be safe when they leave home to go off to college. Now parents have an important resource for comparing safe college campuses. The NRA has relentlessly pushed legislation and litigation to force colleges and universities to allow guns on campus. As a result, 25 two- and four-year schools across the country now all the carrying of firearms on their premises. See the list here: Armed Campuses website: http://armedcampuses.org/

4. Success so far on important gun bills moving through State Legislature!
--Your calls and e-mails make a difference! Watch for future Action Alerts on these bills.

AB 144 (Portantino) -- Ban Open Carry [Passed Sen. Public Safety Committee on June 7th]
Existing law prohibits the carrying of exposed and loaded handguns in public places. However, it does not prohibit untrained and unscreened individuals from carrying exposed, unloaded handguns in public places. Learn more about AB 144 here: http://bradycampaign.org/chapters/california/

AB 809 (Feuer) - Crime Gun Tracing Improvement Act [Passed the Assembly on June 2]
Currently, only handgun purchase and transfer records are retained by the Department of Justice (DOJ). We support the retention of purchase and transfer records of all firearms in CA, not just handgun records. Significantly more long guns than handguns are purchased every year in CA, and data from DOJ show that over half the guns recovered from armed and prohibited persons are long guns. I just threw up a lot.

That's OK. Understandable.

Now clean it up and write some emails to the legislators doing a good job of pissing off the Braadys. They need to hear your support.

I am seeing a lot of "they (Brady) are no longer relevant" comments lately.

I would urge we don't get too confident in that thought. I am sure they thought we were no longer relevant a little while ago too. ;)

Our side while making amazing progress in the last few years still hasn't tipped the balance so much that the Brady campaign is no longer a threat.

I agree that we cannot dismiss them as completely impotent, but keep in mind that strategically ignoring your adversaries, or at least APPEARING to ignore them, also has value.

The Bradies crossing their arms, whining, and stamping their feet does not help their cause.

The armedcampuses website would've been helpful when I was applying! I'd like to have gone to one of those that allow carry...
