Hello everyone,

I've come across this forum many times over the years when searching for quick advice & answers but I decided it was finally time to join up :)

Hopefully one of you can help me out w/ my current situation...

I bought a Mossberg 500A brand-new almost 12+ years ago and didn't really do much with it. In fact, it was just sitting in the far back corner of my closet collecting cobwebs, dust, and your occasional wayward insect in the barrel. Recently, I cleaned it up and decided I wanted to buy some accessories for it. I'd like to get 40" Soft Case, a heat shield, a swivel & sling kit (if such a combination exists), and maybe a tactical light if the price is right.

If not, I always have electrical tape on hand and LED flashlights are a dime 'o dozen in the bargain bins at the Home Depot ; )

Anyways, when I called & talked with a local firearms dealer they found it odd that my shotgun had a swivel stud on the stock but missing the mag cap swivel. They said I might be able to call Mossberg and have one sent out for free but not to hold my breath.

I also called a relative who wholesales sporting goods wondering if they could get me a better deal than what I was being quoted over the phone and what I was finding on the WWW. They were able to find a majority of the above mentioned items but their supplier wouldn't ship to California.

So the question is... Are these items illegal for purchase in SoCal?

If not, know a good store / website I can pick these up at?

Thanks in advance = )

Perfectly legal.

Pump shotguns are very versatile in the area of modifications that are CA legal. just make sure you keep barrel length over 18" and OAL 26"

The reason many companies do not ship to CA is because of their fear that the product is illegal in CA.

MidwayUSA is a great place to do business with... just sayin. And have fun with your shotgun

Yep the only restrictions i can think of on a pump is the barrel length and total length

Yep.

Just make sure that the barrel length is 18 inches or greater and the overall length is 26 inches or greater.

Also, do not increase the magazine capacity to greater than 10 rounds.

True in this case with a Mossberg 500.

Only CA specific feature restriction would be a shotgun with a revolving cylinder, even if it was a pump.

If this is going to be a home defense gun do you really want a "dime a dozen" light from Home Depot? There is an art to using a flashlight with guns. You get what you pay for the most part.
If the gun is a range piece only, go for it. Tacticool it the max. Have a high limit on yor credit card and the world is your pearl. But be advised, there is a lot of crap out there that you don't need for a functional HD weapon. Buyer beware.
The Mossberg 500 is an excellent platform for HD. Add a light with a remote switch, side saddle and a detachable 2 point sling (sling for range use) and you could be done.

Hey, thanks everyone for the input and sorry it took so long to respond; been a crazy couple of weeks

At any rate, I decided to just call Mossberg and ordered the following parts from them directly:

Heat Shield (Blued): #95065 $26.46

Front Swivel Stud: #12030 $3.00

Sling w/ Swivels: #16893 $13.00

Stud Washer: #12146 $3.00

Soft Case: #99249 $20.00

Grand Total : $65.46 + $8.95 S&H = $74.41

Not too bad if I say so myself ;)

@Mossbergman: A light w/ a remote switch? Not sure if I follow. As I've stated before, I'm not looking for anything fancy, just functional & practical. I have a 5 shell nylon sleeve on my stock already, so no side saddle necessary for now. I saw some detachable sling kits on a few websites but I just couldn't convince myself to spend $30.00+ for a set. Plus if my wife found out... Well, let's just say she can be as dangerous as a loaded shotgun when P.O.'d :21:

I think that'll be it as far as accessories go , but I am entertaining the thought of adding a muzzle break and that 10 round drum I saw

Thanks again

I've always hated the look of heat shields. Not to mention, I've never seen a shottie barrel get so hot that I felt the need for a heat shield.

Hello everyone... Well, the heat shield, sling & etc. finally arrived in the mail this week and got around to installing them on my shotgun this evening. It's definitely a challenge to get the heat shield on w/o a small C-Clamp so I had to take a trip to the Home Depot and bought one for about $3.00. I also bought a pack of felt pads for around $2.00 and put them on the ends so I wouldn't scratch the finish.

I'm really P.O.'d at myself though because when everything was close to being finished I wound up scratching the finish at the end of the barrel with the small crescent wrench I was using to screw the brass bead back on :(

http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff472/D4y5133p3r/256.jpg

A couple questions: Is the gap at the end of the heat shield normal and what do I do with the extra slack on the sling? Do I cut it, tuck it, or what?

http://i1237.photobucket.com/albums/ff472/D4y5133p3r/264.jpg

Thanks again :)

If you're certain that you won't need the slack of the sling in the future, you can cut it, if it's a nylon sling make sure you heat the end with a lighter and melt it so it doesn't fray.
I got barrel clamps on E-bay to hold my small hand held tac light that I got from Costco, 3 pack for $20.00....I think?

Hey, you got a pic or a link for the clamp & light?

That's the next thing I'd like to get and I think that'll do it as far as modifications go.

I'm still toying with the idea of adding the Minotaur Tactical Megalodon Shotgun Door Breacher but I don't know :p

If it's a megalodon then it is also useful as an anti-aircraft weapon. Seriously. Check out the video.

forget functionality.....i have some weird desire to add a pistol grip, 6-pos stock, two side saddle shell holders, flashlight, laser, heat shield, VFG, sling, breaching barrel, drum mag, red dot, and bayonnette to my Mossy 500. For no other reason than i just really want to.

In my humble opinion, you need NO other reason than that.

@Coyotebait: Ah man I'm jealous! I'd love to get my hands on a Mini-14! Big 5 Sporting Goods had it on sale a while back and I was almost half-tempted to go ahead and buy it, despite suffering the wrath of my better half. That clamp looks exactly like what I had in mind. Question though, will I have room to mount something like that with the heat shield on the barrel? Looks like it 'll be tricky

@prc77: Hey thanks for the link, I'll definitely be looking into that.

@Volksgrenadier: LMFAO!

@George Loony: Right on Brother!

All I have on my 500A is sling, sidesaddle, HiViz sight, and flashlight with clamp. Keep is KISS simple.

Looking to take an Shotgun class this summer or early fall.

What you're seeing is 2 different things. The rail that replaced my hand guard is NOT part of the clamp for the flash light.
