Does anyone here hunt with a military surplus rifle?

Russian Mosin? 91/30? Finnish Mosin? M44? Scoped Sniper repro?:p

K-31?

Garand (would need to limit capacity)?

Mauser?

M1 Carbine (imagine not appropriate for some game)?

I've never been hunting. I'm not opposed to it, just haven't had the chance.

So any of you use an old war horse to hunt with? If so any use old military surplus ammo?

Well... I got a rabbit in the desert with a K98. About 50-60 yards. I actually felt bad... But DAMN what a mess!

I have hunted with my M44. Does M1A count? The receiver is not surplus but the rest is... :)

Nope, no limit in CA for rifles.
Heck, you can use a 30 rd mag if legally owned.

My father took a couple of deer with an open-sighted Bubba'd M93 Spanish Mauser 7x57 back in the 60's.

I have yet to take any big game.
Maybe someday I'll fix up that M93 (stock is broken now)

I've seen it done, with a five-round en-bloc. Own one myself.

[QUOTE]

I was more alluding to the M-1 Carbine or a AR.

Once again, contrary to many people's beliefs, CA has no restriction on rounds for a rifle for hunting.
Many other states do.

There is no limit on magazine capacity for rifles. I use my OLL "AR-15", my Garand, my Mini-14, and my SKS for rabbits and coyotes.

+1 on this

the 3 round limit is for shotguns

I hunt with an M1A and a 20 round magazine. :)

I'm actually interested in seeing a 30 round clip go "PING!" and fly out the magwell of a garand

About 20 years ago I had an 30-40 Krag that I hunted deer with. Heavy as hell, and kicked like a mule, but the action was slicker than snot on a doorknob.

ill occasionally use my yugo sks when i go deer hunting, ill load 10 rounds, but i had a hard time finding non-FMJ ammo, i like it even though everyone else kinda gives me a hard time about it

My Dad use to hunt deer with a 30-40 Krag he had customized with a Bishop stock, until he got a Mauser-actioned .270. My first deer rifle was an 03-A3. I wanted a new Winchester 94 30-30, but my Dad got me the cheaper .30-06 Springfield. Oh yeah, the year was 1964. Still have the 03-A3, too bad the stock was shortened so I'd fit it back then.

Fyi, for big game hunting in Kalif. one needs to use soft point ammo in rifles. Small varmints and smallgame, I believe FMJ is okay...

Been boar hunting w/ a Garand. No luck, but a hoot to field a M-1 and a comfort in heavy brush... Darn, left my bayonet at home... :)

I killed my first pig with an M1A Scout Squad with Leupold 2.5x IER scope. Steyr Scout is my hunting rifle now though  .
