If I am traveling to the rifle range, I own a crew cab P/U. I have my rifle in the back not in a case can I travel with loaded mags in the front seat say on the floor board of the passenger side?

Rifles are not required to be locked is that not right?

No trunk so what do I do to keep the LEO's comfortable with my transport style?

My advice is to get a case. It will protect your rifle, and will make it more obvious that you are just traveling with it and not out looking for trouble. While not required by law, it will prevent many issues.

My long guns are always in a case when traveling, and I can legally transport loaded, which I don't.

Are you absolutely positive you will not traverse within 1000 feet from a school? By the way, the definition of a school for the purposes of the GFSZ is extremely broad.
