Congratulations, Ohio! California has had state preemption for a long time and it has saved gun-rights from many misguided efforts, most recently the Prop H San Francisco Handgun Ban!

Both the Ohio State Senate and House of Representatives voted to override Governor Bob Taft's (R) veto of House Bill 347.

Thursday, December 7, the State House voted 71-21 to override Governor Taft's veto of this crucial piece of legislation. Today, the State Senate voted 21-12 to sustain the override, with three Democratic Senators voting in favor of the measure. This is the first time in twenty-nine years that the Ohio legislature has overturned a Governor's veto.

Championed by Representative Jim Aslanides (R-94), HB 347 will create statewide preemption ensuring that firearms laws are uniform throughout the state. Currently, 43 states have similar laws across the country. Passing statewide preemption eliminates problems for all gun owners who have been unduly burdened by local ordinances such as Columbus' so-called "assault weapons ban."

In addition, this legislation will correct a number of problems that have surfaced during the past year for concealed carry permit holders. The most common complaint for license holders has been the "plain sight" requirement in a motor vehicle. HB 347 will eliminate this requirement.

A special thank you to all NRA members for your calls and emails in support of HB 347 during the legislative session!

If CA has preemption, then how does the city of LA have more restrictive laws on handguns and ammo sales?

Oh, and yeah; good for Ohio! I listen to a Ohioans for Concealed Carry podcast and they have a lot of RKBA activity there.

Great news there!

I've been wondering on the preemption/LA gun laws thing for a long time now, too.

I believe its because LA is only regulating commerce, sale of firearms and ammunition. They're not regulating possession or ownership which I believe SF was trying to do? So technically, LA is only regulating the stores who sell etc etc

The other ironic/good news in this is a whole heck of a lot of Democrats had to vote for it in Ohio to over-ride the Governor.

There was an earlier thread that was attacking Dems for supposedly backing down from this in Ohio.
