I plan on heading out of state to visit family for christmas. I am taking a couple of my handguns with me to spend some range time while I am back home. I was curious about the legality of leaving one or more of my pistols back there. Is there anything that says I can't lock a pistol or two in a safe at back home? I know I can't mail the gun there, but I can carry it there in my checked bags. Is there something that prevents me from leaving it there?
I'm tired of worrying about my bags making it everytime I travel so it would be nice to just leave one there for when I visit.

My experience is that declared guns help your luggage to not get lost :)

There's no issue of leaving your gun outside the state. What you don't want to do is be perceived as giving it to someone across state lines.

I'd keep it locked up at your relatives house, with some paperwork in the case describing ownership/status.

Thanks Bill!
Definitely not changing ownership. It will stay locked in a case and then locked in a safe.

I would be safe by checking the state laws that you are going to leave your gun at. If you bring a gun into California and just stick it in a safe it could possibly be a bad thing if certain events happen. When you go there to shoot, give the law enforcement folks a quick call and verify. Write down the name of the individual you talked with so if questioned later, you can provide some accurate information.

Where are you going? Nv does not care what you bring, just be prepared to share... ;)

Florida, so, there wont be any issues there. And, you live in Nevada, so, nothing coming out of California should excite you. :)

Tiki,

I don't see where you'll have a problem once in Florida.

Try to get as close as you can to the front of the plane when landing Florida. I recently flew Miami and was on the back of a large plane that was non-stop from SFO to MIA. My rifle beat me to the baggage claim. If they promise to hand deliver it, do not trust them to do so!

I am not trying to scare you, everything is fine 99.9% of the time, just plan things out properly, and boogie to the baggage claim.

ABSOLUTELY!

Do not socialize, get coffee, stroll or pee after getting off the plane. Get to that damned luggage carousel ASAP, even if they've promised to hold your luggage for signature/ID at the Oversize Luggage office.

Yeah, my bags never beat me to the baggage claim area. But, in reviewing the ATF regulations, I can ship a firearm to another state in care of myself. So, I think to cut the risk, I will be shipping them via Fed Ex or UPS, whoever will do it, to myself, in care of my family the day before I fly out from Kali. Then, I don't have to worry about my baggage growing legs. I'll do the same thing on the way back.

EDIT: On a side note, what constitutes a private party transfer in Kali? If my parent lives in Florida and he/she wants to sell me a firearm, is that considered a private party transfer?
