So I picked up my M1A Scout today after a great meeting and private party transfer from a fellow Calgunner, and holy crap. I think I'm in love. After running through the paperwork, I grab my friend and we take lane 5 on the range. I put up a target and send it out to 25 yds (the farthest for this indoor range). I load up my first mag with 5 rounds, take aim, and do this:

Despite many rentals, this is the first long gun I've ever owned, so my first thought was Holy Crap! I don't really know how to dial the sights in for 25 yds, but it shot consistantly low by about 3-4" without me messing with it. I'm relatively unfamiliar with rifle sights with regards to distance, so it's something I'm definitely going to look into more. I didn't get any other target pictures because both me and my friend were shooting the same target, and it was getting messy. Weren't trying to go for much other than "hit it and have fun."

The funniest thing though, was that I didn't realize how bloody loud the thing is. When I put my first round down range, I was told that pretty much everyone on every other lanes leaned over to look and see what the HELL that was! When you fire it, the muzzle break seems to direct most of the gases away from you. So for the shooter, it's loud, but it's not THAT loud. Though as soon as I handed it to my friend to shoot and took a few steps back... man. It's like getting kicked in the chest. You can feel blast impact and the sound is quite deafening. I decided to double up my ear plugs with an additional set of headphones. Beastly. I love this thing. It may be a few years old with the older synthetic stock, but it shoots true and true.

(Although some steel surplus rounds are pictured, I only shot American Eagle FMJ at the indoor range)

Congrats! I pick mine up on Tuesday. I can't wait.
Regarding sight adjustment read this:

Now get a 10/22, set it up for Appleseed, and then go shoot one with the 10/22 first and then the M1A.

Congrats on am extremely fine rifle. I have the standard length M1A, and I seriously think it's the best gun I've ever owned. Magically accurate, very ergonomic, hard-hitting caliber, and yet gentle on the shoulder (if not the ears!). Just a great gun.

Every time I take mine out of the safe, I feel like reciting the "Rifleman's Creed" a la Full Metal Jacket - "this is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine..."

Nice! I've got a Scout due for delivery to the FFL on Tuesday. Have a Mossberg 590A1, but have never owned or even shot a rifle before. I can't wait for the 10 day period to start and end!!

What kind of ammo are you using? I'm planning on getting a variety of different brands in the 150-168 gr range to see how they do, then stocking up on my favorite.

Yikes that can't be much fun for everyone else in an indoor range. Nice gun though.

I picked up 5 boxes of American Eagle 150gr FMJ from the Crossroads gun show when it hit Del Mar last weekend for 9.95/box. I figure that should be good to burn through at the range for a while. :)

Very nice! How do you like that JAE stock? Worth the price?

Impressed with 25 yards? That gun will continue to impress at many, many times that distance!

Yes! If you want to use a scope on an M1a it's the best way to go, and icreases accuracy with internal aluminum skeleton.
Just got another one for my 18 inch gun!

Nice gun huh? You can call SA, give them your S/N and they'll give you all the info on the rifle when it left the factory and possibly who it went to...a shop or an individual. They will also send you a TM for it and the printed pamphlet on sight zeroing.
These are amazing weapons. I have messed up eyes and can hit a 4 inch target at 250 with iron sights.
