We were showing this around my dept last week...

Now this begs the obvious; why was the news crew the first to get eyes on the weapon and why were they there for nearly the whole ordeal?

A very insightful RTO taught us to act and assume there were cameras and recorders on us at all times - this scene was NOT the purpose for his advise; however, it could not ring any truer than in this instance.

The media is the media and we, as cops, have no control of how they spin our actions and what they decide to actually release for public viewing.

Fortunately for our guys, this one ended in nothing other than someone's jacket getting a LOAD of paper.

I don't get it... if the news camera spotted it, and they didn't point it out... and let the person walk in a secured facility... and then tried to make the officer out as incompetent... forget it... why bother trying to make sense when the media is involved.

Our linguist specialist (Really cool janitor guy who speaks Spanish and has this weird thing for A-Rod:p) told us the camera crew's excuse... They apparently thought she was a UC cop and didn't want to blow her cover...

Okay... that makes tons of sense because her gun was sticking out there for the world to see....

Unbelievable. I'm reminded of that video of the man who shot himself in the head in a police interrogation room, apparently no one searched him.

...someone's jacket getting a LOAD of paper.

Pardon my ignorance in LEO lingo, but what does "jacket" mean? File?

Personnel file with all your records, commendations, as well as reprimands or other disciplinary records. Military uses the same term.

Wow! Bad situation not finding the gun.

Reminds me of that one video where they had one guy in for questioning, and the give him a bottle of water, walk out, and he takes a sip and then pulls out a 1911...

And all that time I thought she was happy to see me... :p

That interrogation video with the guy who concealed a full size 1911 is insane!

Because they were the only news crew at the scene. Fox, ABC news n etc...were too busy at the strawberry festival.

It's impossible they will not see that at first contact. Is it their (PO) procedure to call a female police office when there is a female suspect to do the body search? Right?

Some departments maybe... Ours, we are to use the backs of our hands in the sensitive areas. It is crazy to me that so many people missed that weapon.

I will say this though... I think it was liability. There is so much liability out there, that officer safety takes a back seat, AND OF COURSE IT SHOULD NOT!

That is one reason why I hate it when I see people post on CGN saying things like, "that cop is blood thirsty, he wanted to hurt that guy blah blah blah." If they are worried about liability from a search incident to arrest, how are they going to feel about things that carry more liability?
