Im taking the plunge into building an AR. Im not interested in the rails and fancy bells and whistles im planning on making a plane-jane M16 look-a-like for as cheap as possible. Whats the best place to buy parts inexpensively?

You could get a Delton kit for a low cost. Also check out Palmetto State Armory.

Get a lower from some place local, gunshow or look at the marketplace here. Delton, BCM and DSM make some good uppers for a reasonable price. Can get cheapy handguard anywhere but Magpul makes some good ones for a low price. Lower parts kit...see first sentence or Parallax. Same for rest of build. Good luck, killa.

Your not going to get much cheaper price then this...but if you want to build it yourself then that's cool.

Get a lower locally. Cruise Gunbroker for used M16 uppers. You can pick them up for under $300 usually. Add a BCG and charging handle for $120-150, and you have as close as you can get to an M16 here in California. I think I put mine together with a BCM BCG for under $600.

I too, am working on a AR 15 build. I order a lower trigger kit from Palmetto State Armory. They have great prices and I heard alot of good things on the AR15.com (http://www.ar15.com/index.html) forum. Here's what's coming http://palmettostatearmory.com/1361.php This is my first (probably won't be the last) order with them.
Good luck with your build! :D

Is JSE Surplus a legit dealer? They have good prices but I didnt see any anti-hacker stickers or security credentials on the site. Anyone have experience with them?

I have ordered quite a few parts from them multiple time and they have always treated me right. great customer service and fast shipping. I have recommended them to a few people that have also had great experience with them. I would recommend and still use them when I can. That's just me.

After compiling pretty much of all the parts that I need for the build, Im at about $600. Is this typical, or has anyone built one for cheaper??

You can't get any less expensive than this right here. The only thing I have seen less is at a gunshow a guy was selling complete ARs with a Plumcrazy lower for $499. $525 for a complete AR is a great deal!

Just looked at a PlumCrazy lower, that will knock off about $50. Does anybody have any experience with them?

I have one and it suits me just fine for my KISS/budget build. I actually prefer the trigger over some of the other (RRA) lower setups,
And RE: JSE Surplus, they are legit, my upper is from them as well.

So awesome.... Oh ya, it's Colt.

Coupled with an $80 lower purchased locally, this Colt kit is really the best value in M16 lookalikes. You can't get much more authentic in CA.

I have a PCL and its great, trigger feels great, and it is really tight with my upper. I would recommend them, i have a dedicated .22lr upper on it with 1k rounds through it and it feels great.

Spend the $50 and get a regular lower with a metal FCG.

That's without BCG and charging handle. That puts it up in the $400-$425 range.

I was into this for about $850, after DROS, tax, and Misc shipping........ but now it was a M5 RAS rail system, so I'm into it more. It's all CMMG stuff.

if "cheap" is the goal, just buy one built. building one is likely going to cost more and I have seen some selling ARs here - in market place - pretty cheap IIRC.

Also, if CHEAP is your mission, make sure you are going to be satisfied having bottom of the barrel stuff....... because if you start upgrading because you get so into this, spend the exta $200-$300 now in order to save MORE later. There is nothing worse than buying certain pieces TWICE because you made a CHEAP descision the first time around.

If I were you I would wait for the 4th of July Armalite sale. They have their uppers on sale starting at 399.99. And they will be way better quality uppers than anything you will find in that price range. I picked one up last year... going on about 3k rounds with no problems whatsoever.

Excellent input guys, thanks!

This may sound like a silly question but does one really need an ejection port cover? If not I could shave $10 off.

Delton kit and an Areo lower would be about the cheapest way to go. Unless you have time to wait and pick up some good used parts on here and build it yourself, thats what I would do

Agreed, I think that these kits are awesome! Everyone on here seems to think highly of Colt Ar's, and the price is right, but whenever I bring up these kits nobody says anything. I can't seem to get anyone to pick one up, maybe I will.... Nothing more "mil-spec" than a real Colt M-16, WTF?!

If you can't afford a $10 dust cover then you probably can't afford ammo to shoot it anyway. ARs are not cheap but woth every penny. I'd rather have ammo than beer anyway!

^i agree I did my first build and did not skimp per se. I still did a budget build for $801 but used quality materials. i.e. Bcm upper, bcg. The other items I used good fiscal sense, but on those items I saved a little more then did my build and I'm very satisfied. Get the good stuff. There are reasons why the other stuff is cheap. Good luck.

Well, for one thing I believe it's a different barrel. But yeah I agree.

If you're going to build it yourself I would do flattop+free float handguards and a decent barrel so that when you scope it later on you aren't disappointed. If you just want a blaster then just buy a cheap rifle.

How much were you guys able to get your lowers for?

Even with the complete PlumCrazy lower with bullet button installed ($150) gun stores still want $80 or so for the transfer.
