Tragic news coming out of L.A.

A terrible, terrible accident earlier today during the funeral procession for a Manhattan Beach police officer led to the death of Hawthorne Police Officer Andrew Garton. He was 44 years old and leaves a grieving widow and two sons, ages 12 and 7.

The motorcycle accident occurred about 12:30 p.m. as Garton and another motor officer, El Segundo Police Sgt. Rex Fowler, were "leapfrogging" traffic -- blocking intersections to let the procession through and then catching up to the front of the procession to block the forthcoming intersection -- along southbound Hawthorne Blvd. in Torrance. Their bikes collided and the impact threw Garton from his bike and into the path of a northbound sedan.

Both officers were taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where Officer Garton succumbed to his injuries. Sgt. Fowler has non-life-threatening injuries, including a left lower leg broken in more than one place. The driver of the sedan was uninjured.

This is a terrible loss for the south bay and for his family. Andrew was a excellent officer, good friend and a great father and husband. We will deply miss him. What a horrable day. Laying to rest an Officer, and another Officer is taken from us it just isn't fair.
