Couple of guys had the guns shipped from out of state. Gunbroker has one now for $2,600 with bullet button. FFL is in Illinois and will ship to California. I prepaid over one year ago and am waiting for mine. The guns have been allocated by H&K and are slowly trickling out. I emphasize slowly. The serial numbers started at 100 and I have seen 833, so there are at least 733 guns out there. Be patient and you will likely get a better price.

Good luck in your quest.

Look, I just typed gunbroker.com and put MR556 in SEARCH and up came a large number of MR556s including this one. I do not know the seller.

I gave you guys a link. In the ad, it says specifically "H&K MR556 NEW in the BOX California Legal". Seller has +593 rating, which is a good sign. On his website, FFL says "H&K MR556 Shipment just came in at old price. Can ship to California."

FFL will be out on Friday and Monday, but is open Saturday. I always personally call out of state FFLs to ensure that they will ship to California. All evidence appears to show that this out of state FFL will ship to California.

So is the MR556 the civilian version of the famed HK 416.

Yes, for the USA.

The H&K MR-556 is the civilian legal semi-auto only version of the HK-416 intended for the US market.

The H&K MR-223 is the civilian legal semi-auto only version of the H&K-416 intended for the EU market.

There are several differences between the MR-556 and MR-223.

From what I have read, there are two major differences b/w the MR556 and the HK416. The civi version can go full auto and the material from which the barrel is made. I forgot the specifics but the author said it was no big deal and explained it with reasonable logic to convince me that it was no big deal.

If you find one for cheap, just send it to Quentin Laser in Arizona. They'll do the transfer for $15, install a bullet button for $30, disassemble the mag, and ship to you for $30. $75 out the door. That's what I did for mine.
