View Full Version : Do you bring 10/30 mags to the range?

I have searched on the forum and cannot find anything regarding this...

Do you ever bring 10/30 mags on the range? If you do, do you get raised eyebrows from people around you? What would you do when you encounter someone that questions your 10/30 mag (especially if you encounter an LEO)? Thanks.

The range you go to tells you what mags you can use?

A Range master can ask you to leave based on the color of your tee-shirt.

Yes there is a Range in SoCal that has stated "no 10/XX magazines allowed"... If they still follow that rule or not isnt the case with this OP..the fact they can is.

I shoot on National Forest land, BLM lands and on Private Property. I will do some close range sighting and testing at an indoor range that doesn't have an issue with magazine. The fact they can means its not up to me if I can or not.

I always use my assault banana clips at the range :D! Never had a range master question or harrass me at several ranges I frequent. I've had a few uneducated shooters ask me if their legal than I explain the whole 10/30 and blocking the mags deal.

If an RO gave me **** about 10/30 mags I would not ever shoot there again. 10/30 is just easier to insert and remove with a bullet button installed, not to mention that it looks better and can give you a stable shooting platform in a pinch.

Wow glad my range doesnt do that. The one I go when Im not on BLM In the desert doesnt care what you have. They make sure people are not being unsafe or shooting rimfire In the wrong area but besides that nothing said.

I use my legal 30rd standard magazines(usgi converted to pmag) in both of my RAWs. On my others I have my 10/30 pmags. Only difference between the two is a thin strip of red electrical tape wrapped around the bottom of the standard pmags. Tells me which ones are which.

Never been questioned. Never had someone question legality, only questioned if they could shoot a few rounds.

I prefer shorter magazines for bench rest shooting as the longer magazines tend to act as monopods. I see many ?/30 round magazines at the range I go to; I don't know or care what their actual capacity is.

I usually use CPro 10rd or Magpul 10/20 mags, but I will bring a 10/30 PMAG for "stuffs" and giggles. Im not worried about it, but I do get looks from the other folks :)

Baconator
05-22-2011, 2:34 PM
I run mostly 10/20 PMAGs or 10 round USGI style steel mags and don't run into issues. That being said, I mostly shoot at a "super secret" location and don't usually see anyone else outside of my group. I've never shot my AR at a range where there is a range master, but would not hesitate to do so.

I bring them with me all the time and use them. I have never noticed anyone looking at me and never been asked to have them inspected.

IrishPirate
05-22-2011, 2:40 PM
no because i only have featureless rifles so my evil assault clips come with me un-neutered. But when i build my AR i'm planning on having some 10/20's. 10/30's just seem too big for only 10 rounds, and the 10/20's give you more to grab onto than the 10rd mags.

haven't had any issues at the ranges i've been to, but i would definitely not go back to some place that made me leave because i brought in legal magazines that just look scary, no matter how many rounds they hold.

+1

I don't like the 10/30s....too much wasted mag hanging out. Plus the 10/20s have better clearance when using a tripod or shooting off a rest.

Never had a problem at the range bringing 10/30s or 10/20s

Penguin4091

all I have for my AR are 2 10/30 mags (one pmag one usgi). The only problem I have ever had because of them was not from a range master, but was because I have to stack about 8 sandbags up to shoot it from a rest. So bought a couple of metal 10 rounders off of midway usa. One time someone asked me if they were hi caps and I explained that they were just pinned to hold 10 because they look cooler that way.

safewaysecurity

I mostly have 10/30s. I have 1 metal 10 round mag that is almost is almost impossible to load and I don't use it. and I have 1 10/20 mag. All the rest are 10/30. :D

Oceanbob

I run my 30 rounds mags; and normal capacity Glock mags (15 to 20 rounders) including my 32 round mags.

Never been asked and no comments have been made. As far as LEO asking you questions..that will never happen. It is not against the law to possess or own high capacity magazines.

Never let a conversation move to that level.

I have some but do not really use them at the range, I use 10 rd stubby's and some 10/20's. the 10/30's tend to be too long while on the bench nost of the time for me.

I do transport my weapons with 10 rnd mags fixed in place for fit in the case/bag and "compliance".

I heard, from a RO, that some guys at his range were shooting 10/30s and that another shooter at the range called the cops on him (it wasn't anyone working at the range). Cops came, told RO they got a call someone was using hi-cap mags, officer checked the mags, they were legal, everyone rolled their eyes, person who called the cops never came forward.

I guess the point of the story is, someone might see the mags and freak out and call the cops? idk this has to be a pretty localised occurrence. This was in Sac near the AFB.

Either the person who called was secretly an anti or the accused somehow pissed off the other guy.

I do not hope it's the third reason, which is, the person who called is clueless about the law and he lacks common courtesy.

Nope I bring my 10/20's instead :D

But on a serious note, no one should have anything to hide. If a range master has a problem with you having legal magazines, then make sure you get their name and the range's information and let everyone know.

Secondly don't go back until said range fixes their policies. Don't be afraid to vote with your dollar, and voice your opinion!

Never- don't see the point in owning them. I use 10/10's on my Grendel or the Bushmaster 10/20's with the plastic bottom since I do appreciate having the longer length to grab a hold of. But 10/30's don't have any added benefit to me and are to long for bench shooting.

Definitely, but I am going to have to call BS.

The RO probably started talking about how he had some friends die from getting hit in the face with the slide on the 92f, and how he saw a black helicopter chasing down assault clip smugglers right inside the CA border.

Never ever been asked by RO's or other shooters about my mags. The RO's were more concerned with making sure all the safety rules were being followed not so much checking to make sure I only fired 10 rounds before changing mags.

Funny story kinda. RO was clearing the range. I accidentally left a 10/30 clip in with the bore flag. The RO came over and tried to eject the clip and pushing on my Raddlock bullet button saying doesn't this thing work??? I had to tell him you have to use a bullet or some other kind of tool to eject the magazine. Dohh....

No other issues with 10/30 mags other than that.

All my 10/30's are converted back to 30 rd. mags when I bring my rifles to Vegas. Simple as drilling out the aluminum rivets on my base plates and pulling the mag blocks out. It literally takes a few minutes to convert all my mags. Before I head back to CA I just reinstall my mag blocks and rerivet the base plates with my cheap rivet gun from Harbor Freight.

I own one 10 round magazine. It sits at home in a bedside nightstand as a last ditch SHTF thing.

All of my other magazines for my AR15s, Mini-14, and M1A are 20 or 30 rounders. I've never had a problem or issue using them anywhere. :D

The below rant is not against you, but I got tired of questions like these. So don't take it personally =)

I know it's just a simple question but for unknown reason I got annoyed so sorry about that...

Because we can? I mean, we already have neutered guns here. Why can't we buy anything we want (in general)? I'm tired of people questioning why we buy this and that. It's basically the same as why people buy Porsches when they can drive a honda civic. Maybe it's more fun for others.

Please, sometimes it's pointless to question people's decision when one's not in their shoes

Seems like 10/30s are becoming more and more acceptable. Heck, Turners sells long body 10 rounders (10/30 Magpul pmags) now (check out page 2 of their current flyer (http://turners.com/engage/displayads.php)). In the description they do mention it IS a 10 round magazine.
