In your opinion, what is better, 7.62x39 or 5.45x39?

EDIT

Criteria:
-Home/Self Defense
-Target Shooting
-SHTF
-Plinking

Better to do what?

Punching paper? IMO... 5.45x39mm because the ammo is cheaper
Plinking? IMO... 5.45x39mm because the ammo is cheaper
Hunting? IMO... 7.62x39mm because you can take larger sized game

And AKs can be had in more than just those two calibers, some of which are better suited for certain tasks than those two calibers.

7.62X39 = more power. But 545x39 sure is tempting and will be my next build. Im curious what other rounds do they come in besides the cute little 223? Lo

7.62 I suppose.
-Target Shooting
5.45 Shoots nice and straight, on par with an M16
-SHTF
7.62, better penetration, more powerful, far more plentiful
-Plinking
6 to one half dozen to the other

My opinion.

Cant really go wrong with a 7.62x39 AK, but the 5.45 is good too.

this is one thing I like about the AK crowd over the AR crowd, less dogmatic when it comes to caliber choice.

OMG, r u a noobz?!!!111 Dont you knows da SEELZ use teh 5.55 so if you want a different boolit you must be stupidz!!1111 LOLZ!

wtfroflcopterbbqsauce pwnage are you tak'n bout da SEELZ uz 5.45x39 to shoots OBL in da EYE!

lol all joking aside

1. home/self defense = personal preference based on type of ammo used.
2. Target shooting = personal preference, if you have no ammo restrictions at your range then the 5.45x39 gets extra points.
3. SHTF. IMO more people own SKS's than AK74 so the 7.62x39 gets points there.
4. Plinking = personal preference

for those of you keeping score it's a tie why not buy both :43::shrug:

Seriously! And handguns in the caliber can be had for less than $200!
Man I need to take my C&R to J&G and spend some money.

Do consider that while cheaper, most 5.45x39 is at least mildly corrosive and finding non-magnetic ammo can be tricky if you shoot at ranges that prohibit it.

I have both and my primary choice is the 5.45 it hardley has recoil, ammo is cheaper, longer range, and it's not called the poison bullet for nothing. Most ammo is corrosive but shouldn't be a problem if you clean you weapon the proper way.

5.45x39 mags also fit in pouches made for AR mags much better than trying to cram AK47 mags In them. I like both and luckly when I bought my 7.62x39 I wasent that familiar with the 5.45x39 so I didnt have to choose :o

Good luck you'll like them either way, One thing though non magnetic 5.45x39 If Im not mistakin Is around the same price as 7.62x39. Could be wrong but I think surplus on both are magnetic, and new production Is not? But new production both calibers cost around the same (Uly, Wolf, Silver Bear) It's a question more less I don't have to worry where I shoot whether It's magnetic or not but It would be nice to know.

I completely disregard the corrosive issue. its just not an issue.
Ive put thousands of rounds through the ol' 74, and to be honest I may have punched the bore twice. For that matter all the ammo i shoot is corrosive comblock stuff and I never really clean my AK pattern rifles. Still not a hint of rust on any of them after many thousands of rounds.

And cleaning after corrosive ammo is as easy as flushing with water. I'm a big fan of 5.45 for all the reasons mentioned thus far, but it's really personal preference. Though for home defense I would choose 5.45 hands down.

I like the 7.62X39 better. Here is an interesting test by the Russians. Cool vid but skip to 24:15 if you want to see only the test.

Well I was gonna' say 308!

But I guess it's a little spendy for plinking.

Or pick up one of those TGI ak54r from atlanticfirearms. You just have way more ammunition choices with 308 over 54r.

I'm on it.

Do tell. You know, I'd buy a headspaced 7.62x25 parts kit and mags... Mags are probably the main issue, unless you use some PPSh/PPS mags.
