Is it better to own a Metric or Standard FAL recever. Also how do you tell the difference in the magazines and recivers. And last but not least is DSarms metric or standard.

I would say metric is more universal. http://www.falfiles.com

DSA and Entreprise make both. Type 1 and 3 are metric, L1A1 are inch.

As for mags, there is a notch on the back of the mag. If the notch is rounded like a "U", it is metric. I believe the inch mags have a squared off notch.

There are a lot more parts available for metric. Brit, Canadian, Aussie and Kiwi inch parts kits command a premium. I just got myself a DSA type 1 for this very reason.

Well i'm not sure what you mean by standard as they come in two flavors.

Metric are the ones that both come from the FN Factory in Belgium and licensed versions of the metric and DSA makes 2 versions of the metric receiver.

and then there is the inch pattern and this is a licensed version that the English and other manufacturers have produced.

also there are the commonwealth versions but i'm not too up on those so put those out of your head for now.

Metric IMHO are the most common and also in my opinion the best FAL to own are the FAL'S made by FN.

FALFILES.COM is a great resource as is the BOOK by the Blake Stevens called the FAL

I currently own 2 Metric Pattern and 2 Inch type FAL rifles.

There are many different variations/configuations in both types, i.e. Hbar, Carbine, Standard Battle Rifle etc.

As far as selecting one, It all depends on who builds your FAL and if they use good quality/condition surplus parts.

I own 2 FAL's built by ARS (Arizona Response), 1 by VOW (Volunteer Ordnance Works) and 1 by DSA and they all are beautiful rifles that I just love to shoot.

If you are going to build one, make sure you pick up a really good surplus parts kit and use a DSA or Imbel receiver IMHO or if you are going to buy one already built, DSA is always a safe bet and they have exceptional quality. Good Surplus parts kit range depending on what you want to build. There are Imbel (Brazilian), there are some STG58 sets still out there, Israeli Hbar, Australian HBar, English L1a1 rifle sets etc.

A couple of my fals:

1) STG58 FAL built by ARS using Surplus Austrian parts and an Imbel Metric Receiver. Very Accurate like a M1A.

2) L2A1 Australian HBAR built by ARS using Surplus Australian parts on an Imbel Inch cut typeIII receiver. Fun to shoot and gets allot of attention at the range.
