Ok so ive been seeing alot of people talking about bullpup configured rifles today. Im not a law genus but i thought Cali outlawed bullpup rifles? I was.told this by LE so he could be wrong. Ive wanted a bullpup eversince i saw my first one years ago. How does the law work with them? Thanks guys.

Outlawed bulpup? Not at all. They DID ban (by name) the Styer AUG, perhaps the most well known and most movie featured bulpup back in 1989. However, as long as you make the 30"aol and other anti-AW measures like the bullet button etc., the configuration is fine. I love my MSAR which is a clone of the Styer AUG and completely CA legal.

Bullpup rifle configurations are not illegal at all. Period.

Certain configurations of Semi-automatic centerfire rifles can be considered AW's and would therefore be illegal, but that's completely unrelated to whether or not it's a bullpup.

The main reason some bullpup rifles get dinged is because of the minimum overall length rule.

Right! You have to get the MSAR with an 18" barrel (or a shorter one and weld on a long suppressor)

Only if they're semi-auto and centerfire, triggering AW status. But being a bullpup by itself is not a crime nor is it a controlled feature.

Of course as already mentioned, the configuration is not itself the problem. However, as also understood, most of the bulpup rifles tend to fall in the centerfire, semi-auto variety (as opposed to all the bolt action 20" foldin stock rimfire bulpups on the market right? - LOL)

Most definitely centerfire. Not an AW.

Nice pull!. I'm sure mot of us have that specialty rifle in mind when we think of bulpup designs. (as opposed to the Styer AUG (and its progeny), MSAR, Israeli Tavor, English SA-80 rifle, Belgian FnFas2000, French FAMAS, Bushmaster M17S, TelTec RFB, ) I mean rightafter these, I had Desert Tactical on my mind next)

I kid, but you know what I mean. The VAST MAJORITY of bulpup designs are ones which would ordinarily fit nicely into the AW box of CA law. (please don't ban me)!

Msar's are almost unobtainable especially the e4. There's a lot of grumbling about them going under on arf com. I just bought an e4 and did a ton of research. Any questions I'm happy to help.

I should qualify that the older stg 556 is carried in a few places still.

Really? I can't speak to the e4, but I simply called cold war shooters and ordered min. ( I got the one with the integrated 1.5x combat sight like the original Styer) This was, however, several years ago when they first came out.

On the other hand, I'm not surprised by this. I had to send my MSAR back to the factory for FTE issues, and I couldn't get ANYONE on the phone or get a return authorization. Even Chris at Rat Worx (their only supplier) said HE can't always get a hold of the company.

Yeah apparently they've been "moving" to a new facility in nc for two years. If you go to ratworx they don't even list any msar's any more and they're the main distributor. I'm not one to spread rumors but I intend to cal them soon and see what I can find out.

It doesn't have to be welded to meet the CA 30" minimum.

shoot ratworxusa an email or call them and ask them when they are expecting more in stock, they might be disappearing because last i heard MSAR was moving their factory to another location. they might be done with the move by now. thats why i think theres been a shortage anyways, but give em a call and im sure they will have a time frame for you.
