I want to shorten my 1" stainless bull barrel from 24" down to 20" or mabe even 18" and have it re-crowned. Looking for a good gunsmith in S. LA/ N. OC area. This is a 24 free float upper mounted on a DPMS single shot lower. Do I need to have the barrel removed from the upper or can the gunsmith shorten it with the upper in tact. Any info would help.

May or may not be the area you're looking around in, BUT.....

I would recommend you get in touch with Randall at AR15Barrels.com and see what he can do for you.

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys.

If I have the barrel shortened from 24" - 20" inches would I need to have the gas port re located for reliable cycling.

Why don't you sell yours to the guy looking for a varmit upper. Then take the money from the sale and the money you would have spent and buy the one you want?
Just a thought

No. I chopped my 24" barrel down to 20" almost as soon as I unwrapped it. It works fine.

+1 for Randall for AR15barrels.com. Great guy and great turnaround. Usually if it's something like that it would take him an afternoon. Email him and ask him when would be the best time to meet him. He is in Santa Monica.
