View Full Version : Recommendations on a good/accurate and inexpensive AR barrel?

Hello Calgunners!
New to Calguns but loving it!
I'm in the process of building my first CA legal AR. I've got the lower pretty much all figured out, but the options on the upper are endless.

I'm leaning towards the Vltor MUR 1a upper receiver (looks cool and it seems that most people that have it are very pleased with it).

Can anyone recommend a good/inexpensive barrel to go with that receiver? I'd like the rifle to be accurate (not super long range, but good at a distance).

Any input would be appreciated as I'm still a newbie to all of this.

Thanks in advance!

www.midway.com Huge selection of barrels from White Oak, DPMS & Noveske. How much do you have to spend?

For a quality and accurate barrel at a good price check out Black Hole Weaponry. They can't be beat!

I may be wrong, but I'm guessing that with today's manufacturing techniques, pretty much any barrel will shoot better than most shooters. So how much accuracy do you need? Obviously a varmint gun is more critical than a paper puncher.

For precision accuracy, choose a quality stainless barrel. For combat accuracy, choose a chrome-lined barrel. Some of the better ones have already been mentioned (WOA, Rock River, DPMS). I prefer Noveske but you said inexpensive so that's out of the picture.

White Oak is the way to go. Also if your going to spend that money on the upper spend a little extra and get the right one the first time

I'd forgo the VLTOR upper receiver and get a milspec upper receiver. Spend the rest on the barrel or the trigger.

Someone jump in if I am wrong, but I believe that John Hollinger of WOA said that his "cheaper" barrels are also Wilson.

BCM and Wilson Combat barrels have worked great for me! I would highly recommend either. Also have had good luck with an RRA.

Ron builds my barrels. He's built me two 300 whisper barrels. they were $240 shipped. That was a SS beadblasted barrel with m4 feed ramps. If you just want a 5.56 cro-mo barrel might be cheaper. Pretty quick turn around. each barrel only took about 2-3 weeks.

stags 4h barrel is underated. i floated it and am getting 1/2 moa groups or better with topshelf ammo. it shoots just as good maybe a bit better than my bushmaster NM barrel. bushmaster is my second rec. for barrels. no need to spend 500 bucks on a silly barrel when your just trying to make good groups / drop some fur.

Where did you purchase the barrel, how long ago, and is it still going for $130.00 ? At that price I might have to check into that.

Thanks everyone! All the great feedback has given me several options in my price range. I'll be shopping around and picking up a barrel this week.
Thanks again for the great feedback!
