Ok so I recently purchased my first Ca. legal ar-15 and now Im itching for something with a little more kick. Im thinking 7.62 because it would be a more common round. Not sure which one of the 7.62 is more common, 39, 41, 54R. So I want to hear some suggestion peoples. I like the Ar-10 but who makes a OLL? HELP!! Forgot to mention Im in the Long Beach area.

7.62x39 is what the SKS and AK-47 shoot.

AK in 7.62x39.

You can have two for the price of one AR-10. Even thought the AR-10 is badass...

You mean 7.62x51 not x41 right?

Big5 has Mosin 91/30s on sale for 99.99. Add tax and DROS and it's just under $134, assuming you have a lock for one otherwise they make you buy one. Pretty fun to shoot and 7.62x54R can be had for pretty reasonable prices. 20 for $8, even less if you go surplus instead of commercial.

Mega has an OLL AR-10. Comes with a matching upper. I think riflegear sells them, they are near you.

Two more possibilities: VZ 58 and PSL.

Rule .308

In 7.62x51 you have:
M1A
FN FAL
HK91/G3/PTR variants
AR 10

7.62x54R:
PSL
Mosin Nagant bolt guns like the 91, 91/30, 38, 44, etc

7.62x39:
All of the AK's
VZ58
Ruger Mini-30
AR 15
PTR even makes a x39 variant these days.

Myself, I like the FN FAL. I do not own an AR10 but do own examples of most of the stuff I have listed. One thing I would surely do is pick up a nice example of the mosin nagant M91, at $100.00 you cannot go wrong and it is still one of the cheapest center fire rifle cartridges out there.

I would go with 7.62x51(308win), it is a very common round.
You should also consider the M14 (M1A) as the rifle for this round.

.308 is a very common round and can be not too expensive.
BUT
Definitely get yourself a Mosin Nagant and a spam can of 7.62x54R for the best kick/$. Keep your AR for precision work and shots per minute and break out the c-note 91/30 for the big bangs and the ear to ear smiles. It makes great work on produce.

If you go with 7.62x39 an upper receiver will slap on to your ar-15 OLL. I have heard that just about every mag has some feeding issues, but don't quote me on that. But, for the cost of the upper, you could probably get a Saiga or something and have a dedicated 5.56 tack driver and a dedicated 7.62 jack hammer.

What's your budget?

On one end you could get an LWRC REPR for three grand. On the other end you get a Mosin M91/30 on sale for less than $100.

I have AKs, I have mosins, and I have a 308 AR. They're all fun to shoot, but without a budget of some kind we can't give you any advice.

Lets throw in another wrench....

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2011/05/wilson-combats-new-7-62x40-wt-cartridge-for-ar-platform/

To be serious though, you cannot really beat an AK or Mosin for the prices that they go for given they are .30 caliber rifles.

If you want an out of the box Cali legal solution check out a Saiga in either 7.62x39 or 308. great rifles and the cheapest semi-auto 308 you can get. Accuracy is on par with a standard M1A and I'd say more reliable.

My .308 AR assembly cost $2700 all said and done plus optics
My FPK/PSL cost 1k all said and done including an aftermarket scope/mount.
My AK was around 600 out the door and the price of a quality 7.62x39 is about the same.

So what it comes down to is how much money you are willing not to spend on ammo and range fee's. If you hardly ever go to the range and just want a mean looking paper weight get that .308 AR, if you want something that goes to the range more often than not get a PSL. If you want to shoot every weeked get 7.62x39 either an AK or an upper. The only thing cheaper to shoot than 5.45/7.62x39 is probably .22lr. Get the upper use all the money you would be saving and get a nice set of irons/scope and a range membership and shoot as much as you want.

My budget is about $2000. I am leaning more towards the AR but I like the Mini 30 as well. Anybody have any experience withe the Mini 30? Stopped by Ammo Bros today and the 308 lowers were $450+! Oh and I will be stopping by Big 5 on my way to work tomorrow to pay for the Mosin....can't resist at that price.

I'm kinda in the same boat, but pretty set on an AR 308 platform....and the more I shop around, the more I keep coming back to the LWRC REPR....

I, too, am in the same .308/7.62 shopping mode. I like the off-the-rack LRT Stealth/Predatars, LMT308MWS, and LWRC REPR....sexy stuff indeed!

But...if I could roll my own (great for learning about all things with the AR-platform), what lower/upper are easier to locate parts for? Costs are of some consideration on a "responsible budget", but as someone once said, "Buy once, cry once." How true! LOL

I was thinking of matched lower/upper (MEGA MA-TEN or JD Machine or Aero Precision or ??????), matched bolt to 18"~20" precision barrel, flash hider/muzzle break, free-float forend, precision trigger group, buis, acs/ubr/prs (not sure yet), MIAD or ergo grip. (Scope/optics will be determined later)

Depending on operator talent, I want it to perform sub-moa like the three I mentioned above....and roll it for appreciably less cash outlay if possible. And Calif compliant, of course!

What do I need and where do I buy? Is it possible for a DIYer to assemble a. 308/7.62 in an AR platform that will not cost more and will shoot as well as the complete store-bought rifle?

Rekrab

DPMS complete upper, TM 308 lower, DPMS parts kit, DPMS stock, and you're done for around 1k. Add back up irons or an optic of your choice and you're done. I just saw a DPMS 24" upper in the FS section for $600.

When looking at precision barrels (stand alone or complete upper) what should I look for if I want a true precision barrel that I can have precision fun with when sending rounds out past 600yds on steels and paper?

Checked out the LMT MWS 308....NICE! Ok Im stcking with the AR platform...now which one. Lots of good suggestions I think I'll head out to Rifle Gear on my next day off. Thanks everybody.

Go with the real "AR10". The DPMS and LR308 are not AR10. AR10 is a trademark of Armalite. I went with an Armalite 16 inch carbine complete upper on a Aero precision lower with Armalite trigger and other lower parts. It looks like a standard AR15 on steroids and shoots like it too. Bad Azz! I put a Armalite qaud rail, Eotech 517, VTAC sling, Midwest ind. BUIS, and a BCM charging handle. Thats how I roll!
