Anyone know where the best deals for ammo are in the Bay? I use City Arms a lot in Pacifica but they're supplies are small. Any other options? looking for handgun ammo mostly. thanks

I use Big 5 for a quick fix or I use mail order from any number of ammo suppliers.

Ugh, I don't like Big 5's prices.

I use City Arms and fill the gaps in inventory by buying online.

I bought all City Arms' stock of 7.62 Tokarev before Thanksgiving. Sorry. :D

Ammo Group buy ?

or has it been tried and failed ?

I would be in for 2-5 1K round cases of .308 and the same in .223.

Hmm, I am getting a bit low on 7.62x54R... Only about 500 rounds in the house!

Walmart in Mountain View and Milpitas carry ammo. The alternative would be the gun show in Cow Palace.

I checked out the Wally at Mt View and they have a 40 rd box of .223 for $15.

I forgot the brand but I think it was a Remmy.

The WalMart in Mountain View is fun. I went in there and said "I'd like 2 boxes of the .45 Winchester target ammo" and the clerk looked puzzled and asked me "Why?"

i'd love for a clerk to ask me why i needed ammo. I'd tell him because then my gun would be a nice mantel piece or good to look at. I cant see why the clerk would care that much but ur rite it sounds fun.

I was tempted to answer him with "I'd like to throw them at that rotting melon you keep perched on your shoulders" but resisted...

I just got back from the (Edited, sry tteng), (milpitas) Wallmart and they do have good prices for target ammo. I paid 11.67 for WWB .40 165 and 180. Not a bad deal considering other places are like 14.99 for the same box.

I just bought a pile of ammo at Walmart in Mtn View, and the prices are up a good bit from a year ago. Here's how it shook out compared to back then:

12/2006:
Winchester 9mm 100 round Value Pack - $12.88 ea, $13.97 after tax
Winchester .38 100 round Value Pak - $19.97 ea, $21.66 after tax
Winchester .45 ACP 100 round Value Pak - $22.27, $24.16 after tax
CCI MiniMag - 100 round box - about $7 each - I didn't buy any since I just got a bunch from Outdoor Marksman.

9/2005:
Winchester 9mm 100 Value Pack - $10.93 ea, $11.86 after tax
Winchester .38 100 round Value Pak - $16.76, $18.18 after tax
Winchester .45 ACP 100 round Value Pak - $19.97, $21.63 after tax
CCI Minimag - 100 round box - $5 each

I also got some shotgun shells and .22 bulk pack, but didn't have the costs from back then. The counter guy didn't blink at the small mountain of ammo (1500 rounds total); just rang it up and bagged it.

The other thing that's really shot up in price is .223. The stuff I bought a year ago from Outdoor Marksman tended to run about $100/500 rounds shipped, while the XM193 I just got from them was about $160/500 shipped.

The moral of this story is "Buy Lots of Ammo When It's Cheap!"

To paraphrase the Freak Brothers, "Ammo will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no ammo!"

Actually the Wal-mart in Milpitas even encouraged my dad and I to come back and more ammo rather than question what we were going to do with it. 11.99 per 100 rd. WWB if I recall correctly.

None of the Walmarts in Alameda county sell ammo any more. Lame.

For .45 ammo, I buy the Winchester 100rd brick at Wally World for $22. I buy my .223 at Traders in San Leandro. HSM 55gr 50rd box for $16. That's the best deal I've found.

Actually there's this older Asian gentleman at the Mtn. View Wally World's sports dept. who's really helpful. At least he knows exactly what I'm talking about when I ask for not only the caliber but also the grain of the ammunition I want. Usually at other Wally Worlds it'd involve further explanations. :p

I've had good luck at both Mtn. View and Milpitas Wal Marts, although every time I go in there I notice they keep the stock low on .45ACP. Usually can't buy more than 5 or 6 boxes of 50.

I just go back from the MCcarthy Ranch Wallmart and they have WWB .40 100 count for $19.95. Sorry didn't have time to check other calibers but for you .40 shooters it's not a bad price.

K-Mart in San Mateo carries ammo but prices vary. Just yesterday they had some Winchester 22LR Dynapoints for $16.99 per 500 rounds! I used to get the same stuff at Wal Mart for $10 a box but they haven't carried it for a year or so. Last year I purchased a 5 round box of Winchester 3" magnum OO Buckshot that was supposed to be $5.99 but it rang up at $2.97 so I bought their entire stock.

I have found that even at different Wal Marts prices may fluctuate.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I figure mail order works great for the Bay area too (I'm in Socal). Besides Cheaper Than Dirt and Cabela's, I don't know of any other reputable online stores that sell bulk ammo for cheap. Anybody have any suggestions?

I've had good luck with Sportsman's Guide, although some folks haven't. J&G Sales LTD, Midsouth Shooters, MidwayUSA, and Outdoor Marksman can have good deals. AIMSurplus, Southern Ammo, and Widerner's have been recommended by others but I haven't ordered from them yet.

Most are now requiring a signature from someone over 21 upon delivery, which is a pain.

Someday, when I'm utterly bored yet not completely disgusted with computers, I want to automate searching these (and other) sites and others for specific types and brands of ammo.

Too bad there's no group buy. I'm sure there wouldn't be a problem finding enough people to buy.

Just adding to this thread for archival purposes. The Tracy Wal-Mart also sells ammo. I went to the Milpitas Wal-Mart Sat before the range to check things out, got a 100rnd pack of Winchester 45acp for $26.99, not great, but not that bad either. 308 prices I forget exactly, but the same as gun stores ~$13-16 for 20rnds. Buckshot was cheap though, got two 15 round Remington "Express" packs for $7something each.

OK, who's the bastid that bought out all the .45 Blazer Brass at the MV Wal-Mart? Grrr...

Ended up buying some Win. Super-X Slugs and Buckshot. $2.62 for 5 slugs is OK by me.

Went back tonight to pick up some .45 and the Blazer has gone up $1 to $11.97. Shelf tag still says $10.97, so this must be recent.

*I wasn't going to argue the price, as there was a huge line at the register.

Add Vacaville to the list of walmarts in the bay Area (okay greater bay area) that sell ammo.
I bought over $500 bucks worth of 22lr, 32, 38s, 357, 308,30-06, and buckshot and the guy was helpful, patient and never said a word about my purchase except "have fun."
