Very similar to the LR.

effective against what type of target?
What type of firearm?
What length of barrel?

With the shotshells typically the closer the better

Out of a POS 6" revolver they have enough deadly force at 7 yards to dent a soda can :D

That said they would just piss off a snake.
step up to a 38 or 9mm

I know the 22 mag has more power, so how far away would it kill a squirrel ?

They are not for squirrels, the shotshells are for snakes.

Two things are working against you, pellet size and rifled barrels. Each pellet is so small that there is very little energy to do much damage, and rifling causes centrifugal force that destroys the pattern.

Good luck finding a 22mag smooth bore. Heck 22lr smooth bores are out there you just don't see them everyday and they are not cheap nor new. If you want to shoot pesky buzz worms use a 12ga!

I shot a Copperhead while on horseback, with a .22 magnum derringer.

How'd the snake hang onto the derringer while on horseback?

I can see one or the other but you must have been dealing with some kind of circus snake there.

A 12g ruins too much meat. Hell, even a 2 1/2" .410 can make 2 feet of a snake disapprear. Ask me how I know. Anyway, I've never seen a .22mag smoothbore but, I have a Remington 121 Routledge from Gene Autry's estate. It has doubled in price since I bought it in 2005.

Step up to a .38? Why? I have .22lr shotshells with #10 shot and .38s that I've loaded with #10 shot. While the .38 has more shot, the size/weight of the shot is really what is going to determine it's lethal range. I'll have to crony both but, I bet the .22lr actually has a fast MV than the .38 does so, it would actually penetrate at greater distances. I've taken plenty of snakes with both and I just prefer carrying one of my snubnose .38s to one of my bigger .22lr handguns. BTW, who the hell is going to try to shoot a snake with handgun shotshells at 21 feet? Every one I've ever shot has been within 7 feet of the muzzle.
