I'm shopping for a big bore semi-auto rifle and my primary criterias are reliability, ease to strip/clean and accuracy. Of course looking cool is also good. I can't decide between a few choices.

M1 Garand (CMP price is awesome, but not as modern looking)
M1A (new ones are turners for $1300, but heard they have problems)
M1 SOCOM 16 (heard the finish on these rubs off and less durable)
FN FAL (Looks cool but I don't know jack about these)
Romak 3 (Love the look, but would hate to fill up the thumb hole and I don't know where to get one in CA)
H&K 911 (kind of way out of my price range, but looks AWSOME)

My budget is around 1k, but I can stretch it a lil bit. I REALLY like the Romak 3 due to it's price and scope and I also like the FN FAL. But I'm not too familiar with Romak 3's legality in CA or it's reliability and accuracy. I found some FN FAL for around $1500. HK looks cool but is too expensive and I heard they're a pain to clean. I'm open to all suggestions, I've shot a M1 Garand and liked it. But I would really like to get a more modern looking rifle in all black.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

why semi auto? what for? consider a m1 scout befor the socom 16

I have a bunch of big caliber bolt action and SKS. I would love to have a semi-auto big caliber rifle just for kicks. Or maybe bring it with me when I draw a bear tag. Which brings up another requirement, SP ammo must be abundant.

This one is on a DSA type 1 receiver some feel the type 1 is a little stronger than the type 2.

Did you consider the PTR-91? I picked mine up for $600. Shoots .308 and is semi-auto. They are pretty easy to find and parts are plentyfull.

You would have to get a 10 round mag from DSA or 10% if he is carrying them.

I got it off of gunbroker, had it broken down, shipped the lower to the FFL and the rest to me. There is a ton of them on gunbroker, you just need to find someone that is willing to break it down and ship 2 packages.

$410? Find a dealer that will let you use their FFL to get it for $325. Most FFLs don't sell them out of their own store anyways, so they rather make money on the commission.

lol, besides the astronomical price tag associated with the BAR, I thought it's also highly illegal in CA.

lol,

I guess my choice is down to either a FAL or a PTR-91, if I can find them for a reasonable price.

FAL because the stripper clips are easier. Then build the Cetme. :)

I'd go with either a FAL as it still can be loaded quickly and fairly easily even with a fixed mag or the CMP option.

Either buying a DSA rifle or building your own with a DSA or IMBEL receiver + parts kit and you basically have a military rifle minus the select fire option. Good, solid rifle.

A CMP Garand is also a great option. At $425 a field grade is probably the best deal going for a rifle. For the price of some items on that list you could get two Garands and enough ammo for a great deal of fun:) .

These CMP Garands aren't going to be around forever and when they're gone they won't be selling for anything close to $425. Also, the fact that it doesn't look modern or evil can also be beneficial in that it attracts less attention.

The only big bore semi autos that I've seen for sale are the 50BMGs and you can't buy them in Cali anymore.

As an alternative to the Garand, consider the FN-49, a.k.a. SAFN. Unlike its vulgarized successor, the FN FAL, it can be had in its original configuration.

In a handier format, consider also the HK SL-7.

If you like the HK-911, why not consider the PTR-91:
http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/programming/expand.asp?Prodid=249

Price is less than the Socom 16 and quality is comparable to HK. Maglock kits for it even meet the proposed regulation. Not sure if Atlantic will ship to CA, but you could use Steve at spread firearms and pay an extra ~70 for the neutering service:

+1 for the HK/PTR type rifle.

I even know where you can get some 10 rounders and magazine locks for it.:)

Sailormilan2

I am not too sure the Browning military BAR is illegal in CA. None of the evil features, save an unslotted tube, which some call a "flash hider" which also holds the bi pod. However, the evil hi cap mags might be something else again.

rorschach
12-07-2006, 4:50 PM
They are not, provided you can get one without the flash hider. OOW will sell them to California, no flash hider and 10 round mag.
