I just saw this is on tonight:

Mythbusters: "Firearms Folklore" The Mythbusters test three gun myths.

It appears to be an all new episode. Tonight (11/29) on the Discovery Channel at 9 pm.

They are usually pretty good with addressing firearms-related stuff. This should be some good entertainment.

This should be the episode of trying to shoot 5 rounds before a coin hits the ground from the back of the hand. The guy that does the quick draw lives in Livermore. He is the FFL I use. Heads up if this is the episode the myth gets busted at their range, but he told me that he actually confirmed it could be done the next day at Chabot.

This is the sniper v. sniper, musket ball fuse, do hammers explode, and bullet into a revolver chamber?

Everyone catch Mike from SJGE selling Jamie a bolt action rifle?

Well, they missed it on the Hathcock scope shot.
Comparing one of today's multi-lensed, coated optics scope to the scope on a Mosin-Nagant. Not gonna be the same guys.
The Nagant scope has far fewer lenses and is half the length.

Ah well, I expected something like this.

That is exactly what I was thinking!

We should bombard them with email and hopefully they'll do it again like they did with the truck. (Tailgate up vs Tailgate down)

Hahaha. Yeah....

Salesman: "This is a new gun that just came out. This is the actual, 100%, true copy of the Vietnam sniper rifle."

Jamie: "So... Is that a good rifle?"

Salesman: "Oh man [closes bolt]. You could hit a fly at 500 yards with this [pauses] if you are a good sniper.

Yeah, one thing that the show never addresses (or maybe gets edited out?) is the type of ammunition. They never illustrate how a lead slug might perform differently than an armor piercing round, or talk about bullet mass or construction. They sometimes mention "full metal jacket" or "hollow point," but they never explain the differences to the viewers.

Just a point of clarification - that was Mike the owner, not our own Xeno.

However, I do think Mike the owner logs on here as well.

Also note that the rifle they used in the testing wasn't the Remington USMC 40.

I didn't think it was too smart of that guy to pull the trigger on the rifle when they put the rifles pretty much point blank to each other in order to shoot the scope. You'd think they guy would at least be behind a barrier or something. It just takes one bad bullet deflection to ruin your day or shoot your eye out.

The bullet in the revolver would have been slightly differenet if the revolver had an empty case in it like the one in the story. That would have slowed the bullet dow some before it hit the recoil shield and it would have been more intact. Oh well.

For the Sniper story, the LEO firearms guy isn't much of a "ringer" with a PSS. A good rifle guy would have made 1 ragged hole at 100, not 3 separate holes.

The shooting rifle looked to be a Remington 700 in 308. Standard Sniper rifle for PD's and SWAT in this area. They had one just like for sale at Markley's.

During the shoot the revolver test:

I can't believe no one has said anything about Jamie's line...............

"the problem is that the 9mm bullet is larger than the 38 special chamber"

I was explaining how that was wrong to Wifezilla and she just looks at me and says "You're such a gun nerd"

Yeah, last time I checked a 38 special is .358 and 9mm is .355, that and the exit hole on the end of the cylinder is larger than both, the bullet is not suposed to touch the cylinder as it leaves.

It looked like an LTR... at least it had the triangular fluting, which some full lengths had.

On shooting the scope. Someone freeze frame their TIVO and see what kind of ammo they're shooting. I'd like to see if it's FMJ.

Also, did you notice that on the scope shots that they hit the front bell of the scope every time? Not once did it look like they hit the center of the front lens.

The MythBusters were using 308 match ammo with the 168gr SMK.. that is the reason why the bullet won't go through the scope.. the bullet has too thin a jacket to to that.. Carlos Hathcock was using a Win Model 64 and 30-06 173gr FMJ match ammo.... they MythBusters WILL be revisiting this myth soon... I'll be getting a heads up when they will be doing this and they will be trying to use the correct ammo, if not the correct rifle (if available) they will also be getting ahold of older scopes to try this one again.......

More than that though, it looks like it may have been worked on. The bolt handle looked like the ones that GAP puts on their rifles and which I had GAP put on mine. Last time I picked up a 700LTR it just had the plain ol' bolt that Remington ships on all the 700's. I'd guess at the very least it was probably trued, new bolt handle and prolly a 2~3 lbs trigger. Standard stuff for that type of rifle...

James R.

One of the off-screeners. A producer or what not IIRC. *supposedly* even hotter than Kari............

And no, no pics anyone could find last time when this subject came up; so I dunno if the rumor be true or not.

Somebody do a screen capture off thier vid card so we can see that one sec Xeno's mentioning!!!!!!
