Most of my handguns are 9mm. I've decided to add a .40 cal to the family. I'm thinking about a Glock or a XD. Something compact/subcompact though. Any ideas/feedback on which is good/best? Advantages vs Disadvantages on either? What are the good/bad features? Thanks in advance!

Glock all the way....

If you go Glock, get the 35 (longer sight radius, better recoil management). If you insist on .40S&W, think about an M&P w/ an APEX DCAEK (recoil management similar or better than G35).

I like the XD a lot but the higher bore axis is not that great for recoil management. If you decide on the XD, get the XD40 Tactical (longer sight radius, longer slide will offset muzzle flip from high bore axis). Also get a Springer Precision or Powder River Precision trigger.

I enjoy my Glock 23 Compact. Great pistol, extremely reliable. The M&P is also a very nice shooter in .40S&W, and with the APEX parts it's even better.

I'm a bit confused. I thought that you couldn't buy M&P's unless you were LEO? Or was I told wrong?

Glock 23 FTW.

Also consider the G35.

It would be cool if you could get a gen4 Glock 23.

Maybe a 1911 in .45ACP should be next instead.

Glock 20... Go big or Go home. Ok, Ok... Glock 29, since you wanted the compact. ;P

I have an XD .40 and am quite happy with it. It fit my hand better than the Glock does. I would say ignore all the advice above, not because it is bad... it isn't, but because it applies to those people and not you. Go into a shop that has a Glock, and XD, and an M&P. Pick it up, handle it, grip it, heft it. Does it feel good in your hand first off. Then see if you can rent one or borrow one from a friend and shoot it. Again, which one feels best. Then buy that one.
I like Glocks, they are well built guns. They just don't fell comfortable in my hands. I bought my XD before the M&Ps came out, so I havent bothered to pick one up and see how it feels. ;P

Don't forget to try out a CZ 75B! Sweetest ergonomics on that pistol all steel makes for a great range gun.

they're all great pistols, and i'm sure you'll do the smart thing and shoot all of them back to back at a range before you make your decision. Here is my quick $.02:

Have an XD, but I shoot glock better. Shot an M&P and it's pretty sweet also, but the XD felt slightly better in my hand (or maybe just more familiar, hence my preference). I would love to shoot an M&P with an apex trigger though. Can't go wrong with any of the three, pick the one that shoots best for you.

The CZ 75B is pretty sweet too. Haven't shot one but it's probably the most ergo pistol i've held.

This past weekend I did a comparison between my friend's ported G22 and my M&P40. I think the M&P is much more comfortable and I am able to get a much better grip to control recoil. The G22 had slightly better recoil control but I attribute that to the ports. I think the M&P would beat a non-ported G22. I really enjoyed shooting the M&P and think it's a better gun than the Glock.

Get the XD Tactical .40.

The XD handles recoil like a champ. Compared to my 23 the XD has barely any recoil. I'll even say the recoil management is better than my P229 a gun that is heavy and designed for the .40 S&W.

I don't know what your plans are but in .40 I think the choice is simple for me.... XD all the way.

People like to act like the XD has a super high bore axis it does not. It looks like it does because of the front dust cover but your hand rides relatively high and the slide is barely taller than a glock's. Do not get fooled.

I agree. From my experience, XDs have less felt recoil than their similarly sized glock counterparts.

I'm purchasing a p226r in .40 cal today. Shot it at the range and fell in love.

Maybe give the P226 a try? I've shot several things in .40, nothing seems as controlled or accurate as a Sig to me. Glock's are manageable, but extremely jumpy compared to the P226 IMHO. The HK USP is nice too, and accurate, but less stable than the P226. I like the CZ-75's I've shot, but I've only shot them in 9mm. The P229 is nice also, but isn't as controlled feeling as the P226.

Overall I find .40 harder to shoot than 9mm, .45 acp, and .357 magnum.

Are you a girl? if not then I am sure a 1911 will fit your hands (my gf handles one very well). It will definitely fit better than a full sized glock.

But to your OP: try out the sig 239 it is a great little gun and concealable.

I shoot the XD better than the glock... Go and rent them and try them out for yourself.

Owned a uspc .40/357 sig, ended up selling it. The .40 s&w is a round that has quite a bit of felt recoil if packed into a small frame. My usp 9 is sweet but a bit small in my hands, and my usp .45 fits me perfect.

As for a .45, u can get smaller framed guns like 1911 commander clones, had one and sold it too. Dont think i have "big" hands, but maybe bit bigger than most.

Best advice is try them out, see what fits u best. Cant go wrong w glock, hk, xd, etc.

+1. People will always say Glock...but its their opinion. Go find all three shoot them.

I had a Glock 22, sold it just because it doesnt fit my hand well. Shot great though! Got a XD40 in 2002, still have it today because its my fav gun out of all my guns. Had a M&P40 but it's snap is more then the glock, traded it.

Dont buy a XD because I said I like it, or buy a glock because someone else said its the BEST...they all shoot well and its up to you to be able to handle the gun or not.

Best of luck!

I shoot a Glock 30. I don't have big hands. I have shot 23/27 and 19/26 as well.

Had I not picked up the 30 on a good deal, I'd have a 19 for sure. I prefer .45 over .40, I found the .40 to be too 'snappy' and didn't less 'perceived' recoil than my .45.

9mm in a 19 was like a hot knife through butter though... that's going to be my next 'range' gun.

I've got really small hands also and the 1911 fits me just fine. You could also get thin grips if it is still too big.

Pick what trigger platform you want and start from there vs. What just feels nice. Ideally you'd train to "fit" your platform. GLOCKS are popular due to their low amount of parts, lower price, and great reset. Have you tried many at the range?

Check out the Sig Pro SP2022. It is available in .40 S&W. Turners has it on sale frequently for $435 with night sites. Is has a de-cocker and is DA/SA, with a polymer frame, stainless slide and a rail.

I already have a SP2022 in 9mm. I'm looking for "another" type of handgun in .40cal :D

I haven't tried any at the range yet but I plan to sometime next week because I have a camping trip this weekend to attend. :chris:
