View Full Version : how do you keep your pistol mint inside your 1-compartment range bag?

Here's my challenge:

I have a range bag that has 1 compartment. It's been perfect for rifle shooting. Now I have a pistol (in 9 days). I'm not going to toss a brand new shiny stainless pistol in there to rummage around with cleaning rods, knick knacks, ammo boxes, and the like.

I DO have a gun sock for it, but it's hard to find a zippered pouch (though I will if it's the best option.)

Seems like I have a couple options to keep the pistol in top shape:

-Find a zippered bag. forces me to re-arrange the bag contents frequently to fit the bag in place, unless I plop the bag right on top of everything (is this OK?)

-Use the gun sock and call it good enough. This one worries me.

-Use a large cleaning rag to divide the ammo and stuff on the bottom from the pistol on the sock on top. Provides padding, but everything needs to be arranged every time the bag is packed and unpacked. Seems cumbersome.

-Try to build in a divider to split the bag in two. Pistol gets a dedicated compartment. No oddball packing and unpacking, everything is good to go at all times. But the most complicated, and may cost the most money.

How many of you guys use a 1 compartment bag AND keep a pistol in there? what do YOU do?

Go get one of those $10 single pistol soft sided cases (shaped like a triangle w/ a zipper) and put the pistol in that before it goes into the range bag. Problem solved.

Mint? That means not used often enough. LOL I carry my firearms in a foam lined case and the ammo and other gun gear in my range bag/box.

I buy guns to shoot not to keep in "mint condition".

I say just get a new bag. If you don't want to do that get a cheap pistol case from Big-5 or Wally World.

I would suggest this bag. It is by far the best bag I have ever owned.

I use a 5.11 Range Bag and it has padded sleeve pockets that keep two handguns safe and prevent damage to each

That is exactly the same as the Midway bag but the Midway one is $30-$40 cheaper.

Edit maybe more. The 5.11 is $119.99 on there website. Midway bag is $39.99 and they are the same bag.

I do appreciate the continued responses guys, thank you and keep them coming.

Besides not overthinking it and the suggestion for using a soft zippered case (both great suggestions) does anyone actually use 1-compartment range bags as a 1-bag solution for the range?

I already totally get the idea of buying a new compartmentalized range bag or carrying multiple bags.

I went straight to the midway bag. You should too.
Why would you even WANT a one compartment range bag? Too many different things need to go in a range bag.

I'm in the process of getting that midway bag, but I'm using a mostly one compartment bag right now. I just keep each handgun in its own zippered "taco"

Dude... Big5 store. Allen sheepskin zippered gun rug. $15. Problem solved. They come in 3 sizes.

Go get a small plastic toolbox & a padlock. Satisfies the "locked container" requirement for transport.

Safes and display cases are better for keeping guns "mint". Once you shoot it, it loses "mint" status. I use gun socks and clean my guns....

this is also a nice bag. $8.00 too!!

If you want to keep it simple use an inexpensive netbook/tablet sleeve. Arrange bag for your convienence.

I just keep my pistol in the case it came in and carry it separately from my range bag. You do have two hands, anyhow.

Get this:

http://www.amazon.com/Allen-Company-Locking-Handgun-11-Inch/dp/B000TV66UI/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1304895760&sr=8-14

Has a built in locking mechanism with key which should satisfy California's law when transporting a handgun unloaded in a completely enclosed locked container.

I keep my pistols in their respective plastic cases. I carry those cases in an Ogio laptop bag if I'm shooting one pistol. If I'm going to shoot more than one pistol I carry them in a airline rolling carry on bag.

This is the bag I use. Not bad, good for carrying all I need, plus the extra gear for my son and wife..

My only main gripe is locking it. Wish it was easier to lock. I may have to go and buy a small pistol zipper bag to toss in so I can consider it "locked"

It does come with two pistol bags, but not exactly easy to lock.

Locked. Not a problem here.

Some google luck, I found this:

http://www.google.com/search?q=pelican+padded+dividers&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&startIndex=&startPage=1

Does anyone know of other manufacturers of similar equipment that can be found cheaper to be re-purposed to another bag? These are darn near perfect, but at $60 for twice as much as needed, I'm back to those who suggest I buy a new bag of the wrong configuration anyways.

Something that the Targets or Frys of the world might have or the like

a cheap solution would be to wrap the pistol up in a large towel, but it would still be somewhat susceptible to damage. a padded hard case would be a better solution

plain answer, unloaded in a locked container/bag/case.

complete answer.... i am sure some one will list up the P.C. or one of the many previous posts that contain the information.

how do you keep your pistol mint inside your 1-compartment range bag?

I keep my mints in this handy pistol candy dispenser:

I have the Midway bag that Bay Area Shooter has and love it. I carry my hand guns in one of my two lock boxes (one is a double) when in the car then put them in the sleves at the range. If you take your family shooting with you the Midway bag has the room you will need.

I just put my pistol(s) in a cut off sleeve from an old t-shirt and put it on top of all the other stuff I have inside my range bag. It's never gotten banged up or scratched so far.

If I really had to think into the situation more than that I'd probably pony up $20 to buy another bag so I didn't have to ponder the situation any further;)

I picked this up from home depot
http://www.homedepot.com/Husky/h_d1/N-5yc1vZrd/R-202018004/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

It has a divider, a bunch of pockets for mags and do-dads. I put my holster in one of the pockets and put the pistol in that. I put 2 pistols, a lula, ammo, ears and eyes with no problem, the zippers take a bag lock and for $30 if you hate it take it back or use it as a tool bag!!

Your trunk is also considered a locked container as long as you cannot access it through the rear seat.

I was wondering how people got around only having the two pistol cases in there. Anybody else do something different? I was also wondering if they sold those little zippered sleeves somewhere too...

Midway has the pistol sleeves here

Will the comp bag hold two of the tactical bags with the carry insert or without the carry insert?

+1 on the padded pistol cases, unzip all the way and use as a gun rug when you set the gun down during cease fire.

Markus

Hmm it's $12 for just the insert? And it's only in black.... Whereas I could get the pistol bag for $8 in black or green.... I think I know which one I want.

Get a new bag or maybe a sock. Or get a zipper pouch like you said. There is nothing wrong with wanting to keep your guns finish nice.

First of all, it's a mistake trying to keep a firearm "Mint" unless it's a museum piece or a safe queen you will never fire.

You must break in your guns properly. This video is titled for Rifles, but it applies equally well to handguns.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRRahHX9Zkg

And no, I've never thrown a naked gun into my range bag full of shooting crap. Get a rug or something to cover it. You'll end up with a ear plug or a .22 cartridge stuck in the barrel of your gun.
