If you want shims try Brownells or PWS...

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=38890/Product/AR_15_M16_AR_STYLE__308_MUZZLE_DEVICE_ALIGNMENT_SH IMS

Randall has a full time job that involves travel and spends his free time shooting just like the rest of us. He does gunsmithing on the side.

Randall is pretty good about getting back to people. Give him a few days.

I contacted Randall very recently (2 weeks ago) about getting a new barrel. He said that he's only doing service at this point, no new barrel production.

Not to be a damper, but he's "well known" on AR15.com as well, but the connotation isn't what you're implying.

To the OP: He has a history of slow responses due to other life priorities, so just keep on him and you should get through.

Yes but the reason is irrelevant to his services or work reputation.

A little advise, the guy is top notch however you he has other priorities. So time can and most likely will be an issue with him. I would only get the work done by him if you can physically meet him. He usually does on-spot work, so ask him about it.

the bad reviews i have seen on other forums are mostly from people that cant understand that he has a day job and doesnt spend every wakinh second working on guns. he works out of his home shop on the side and does really top notch work for resonable prices. if you need work done its best to make an appointment and you can wait while he works.

he's done work for me in the past... top notch work and really a good guy to meet with and have your work done while you wait. he really knows his stuff and explains what he's doing at every step. i'd have no problems getting more stuff worked on by him.

that being said, i have read the arfcom threads about his turn around times which isn't a problem if you take the stuff there and have him do it while you wait.

I have driven to his house twice now , watched him do all the machining ...and the guy knows his ****...my 260 Remington he just chambered/installed new truck axle aka barrel on is a certified tackdriver.

Did I mention he lives 360 miles away from me :)

To let everyone know, Randall and the CAPRC guys are up north at the TBRC 2011 match so there will be a lag in getting ahold of them. But, you may get him at CAPRC.com in the evenings.

There are other sources for parts as mentioned above. Which I would explore if I were you. Randall's work is very, very good He did work for me also and I have nothing but respect for him, not to mention he is WEALTH of knowledge.

However, beware, it may take a while for your work to get done, and sometimes communcation isn't always timely. If your a person that isn't patient, and want's immediate communcation i would suggest:
http://www.adcofirearms.com/.

There is nothing but good feed back from ARF members and they have business hours. Usual turn around is a week.

FYI, it took me 9 weeks to get 2 uppers pinned, one needed a DD rail installed also. I'm a patient person, and in NO rush for anything.

Again, nothing against him. If was in socal, I would just set an appointment and drive to him and not even bother with anyone else, but I can't.

Randall "AR15barrels.com" will work on your needs while you wait, "30-60 minutes". My local smith will also work on my needs while I wait, "3-30 weeks". Randall is one of the best AR/R700 gun smith I ever knew, no worries.

randall does top notch work, have him cut my 18" bull barrel down to 16", thread it, index the compensator, remove a bit of material from the barrel to i could install the DD lite rail and do m4 feed ramps on my upper receiver. His shop is his little garage with some nice tools be patient hes a good smith at a reasonable price.

I had Randall cut & crown a pistol barrel for me, and I had it shipped out to him and back. He did an excellent job and it was done in a timely fashion.

I would work with him again in a heartbeat.

I miss Randall on CalGuns.

...and I didn't even know him. He just knows so much.

OP: from what I can tell he's good to go, but as others have mentioned I'm sure he's got a heck of a backlog and there's a reason: I hear he's very, very good.

He's a great guy, real helpful and knowledgeable. And not just AR stuff, I had him look at my M1 Carbine once. I met him at his friends house down here in the south bay and he checked out the problem for free.

I suppose we did play some phone tag, but whatever, it wasnt an issue for me.

Nope. You're mistaken. He's a surly ***** no matter what. That doesn't say anything to his effectiveness as a gunsmith, that's purely him as a person. Why do you think he was perma-banned? Just because he did you right with your gun, doesn't mean he's not a surly *****. ;)

If you're referring to me, then I gotta say nope. There is no pleasure in it. I'm simply informing someone who may send him an email with a perfectly logical, normal, basic request only to get a response that is short, dismissive and well, surly. Ask me how I know? Oh, and I'm good friends with a friend of his (which I mentioned in my email) and that didn't matter - still a *****. ;)

Shall we go on? I can do this all night... and day...

Randall is not perma banned.
He can come back here to CalGuns anytime he wants.
He is banned at arf but I note his technical posts there are stickies.
He has spent hours making up informative threads for this forum on how to get into reloading and target shooting and much more for the benefit of everyone.
These are very kind hearted things to do, so clearly there is more than one side to this coin.
I have always treated Randall with respect and have received the same back.

Hylander, Randall's schedule is erratic.
Sometimes he is gone for weeks at a time.
He does not sell spare parts anymore, he just does service and machining.
It's best to round up the parts you need elsewhere.
If you need help getting them together, Randall's the man.

Actually, yeah, that's correct. He could come back any time if he chose not to be a surly ***** and hold his tongue occasionally. Guess why he's not back? Rocket surgery. I know.

BTW - Even an idiot savant can be REALLY good at one thing. That doesn't make him someone you want to hang out with.

I'm sorry he didn't treat you like a king and prioritize your work since your a friend of a friend. The only people who don't like Randall are those who have never met him in rl and get butthurt when he makes them look foolish online by correcting their blatantly wrong statements.

I put it up, but then I took it down. The people that own the range got very upset about it apparently, and a friend asked me nicely to remove it.

Whoops, I am thinking of a different pic. I guess there are a few of them out there....

Didn't ask to be treated like a king and didn't want priority (that's a LOT of assuming you have going on there.) I simply mentioned the referral in my email to him and got a demeaning, disrespectful answer in return. He's a pedantic windbag that likes to try and make other people look small, because they don't know as much about guns as he does. Neat. Why would I want to meet someone in RL that's a douche-nozzle to me online? That doesn't make any sense to me. It only takes a modicum of composure to be civil to be people you have never met. Believe me, I have to remind myself that all the time on this site. ;)
