So lately I've been looking for a cheap .22 (under $200) i can take to the range and practice with occasionally...

I came across the phoenix arms hp22.

Does anyone here own one of these? How do you like it? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated...

It seems like what I'm looking for and Is pretty cheap @ around $130.

This is it right here:

i have one, i actually really like it. it seems to eat any .22 ammo except high velocity i put through it. the only annoying part are all the safeties on it. it also seems to be quite accurate so i cant complain.

i took thing thing apart once and almost lost the spring. i wouldn't recommend doing that

I like mine, but there are so many good reviews of them on the internet right now that no one should need to ask at this point. Google.

The best money you can spend on a small .22 auto
The magazine disconnect and magazine safety are easily disabled to make it a fun shooter. Mine has eaten every ammo I have tried including 60gr subsonics down to 32 gr Stingers.
I encourage everyone to buy one or five, its even made in California.

I've been thinking about trying out one of these but interested in the deluxe range kit which comes with a 3" and 5" bbl.

They also make a 25 ACP version. SOG has the 25 ACP for $99.95 Dealer cost but indicates sold out of the 22 LR though. BB

buy the delux range kit....it's worth the extra $25 bucks. It would cost you $60 to get all the stuff later on. great gun, wish i didn't have to sell mine. i'd buy it again.

Dont buy it! I've had to send mine back twice so far, the frames will crack eventually... I just drosed my new replacement and Its in Jail until next monday, I am most likely going to sell it since its still NIB unfired.

I bought one for the same price and put roughly 1400 rounds and no problems so far.
Right out the box, I cleaned her, lubed and racked the slide a few hundred times, cleaned and lubed again.
I do run her wet at the range meaning I make sure there's a bit of oil on the paper thin frame next to the slide lever.
I also received three free extra recoil springs from Phoenix Arms when I called.
The springs I received are a tad longer and more strength to it compared to the
spring that came with the pistol.
Also, DO NOT use high velocity ammo. I only use CCI Minimags and Remington Subsonics. Anything below 1200 fps is okay.

Its a cool little pistol. I had mine for over a year with about 600 rounds fired and no problems so far. All the safeties do get a little frustrating sometimes. Wish it could have more than 10 rounds. but overall good for the money. fun and cheap to shoot so thats always a plus

I've seen these at the gun stores. Always assumed it was crappy. I'm surprised to see so many positive reviews. I'll have to look at one closer.

My Aunt uses it has her backup CC weapon. Fired about 300 rounds through it the last time I was in AZ. Flawless up until we switched to Rem Gold. But that is most likely due to the bad ammo and not the firearms fault.

I'm trying to break mine with a steady diet of Stingers. No luck yet but I'm sure I can do it. I'm only around 5-600 rounds maybe a little more so far.

Aren't Stingers HV? I'd stay clear off those. HV ammo causes frame cracks.

i think i have been through at least 3 full boxes of federal 525 bulks , the spring wore out but i picked up 3 of those when i bought the longer barrel, magazine and case. For a real cheap plinker, it has been great.

I have the deluxe range master kit; Turners will special order it for you if you ask. I stick with standard velocity for mine.

I've been looking at this pistol for a plinker and new shooter introductory gun. Any of you that have it have any problems with accidental dry firing with it not locking the slide back after the last round?

I hate to say that I have done this a few times shooting my buddies PA....its hard to keep a round count when your just plinking away with this gun...

What was the round count? Still thinking about picking one up just because they are dirt cheap and guaranteed replaceable when they do break.

I have one and have put a thousand or so trouble-free rounds through it. Haven't had any problems with the Federal bulk packs either. For a small 22 I think it's dandy.

p.s check out my avatar.

I like the HP22 way better. Its the perfect size for a .22 imo. I spoke with them today and am sending it in and my nickel colored one I just ordered got shipped today :D

... guaranteed replaceable when they do break.

Just remember, we're only supposed to be shooting standard velocity rounds. It's in the manual and I understand that they ask you when you request warranty service. just fyi

High velocity is the standard

I bought one because I wanted to own a "Saturday night special" and support a "ring of fire" company. I wouldn't own it as my only .22, not to mention my only gun.

i did the mag disconnect and safety mod

i'd say i can trust this enough for HD, light carry and just some good ol range plinkin fun!!! $150 well spent :D

Mine should be arriving at my FFL any day now. Then I get 10 days to cool off, cause, you know, I'm a hothead gun lover and and all that good stuff.

I bought it for a cheap plinker at the range to give me variety. Would never CCW it.

where did u get the rubber grips to fit? or did u cut a regular sized one?

i find the grip a tad too small even for my small hands

i also am close to pickin up my 2nd hp22a and its gonna be NICKEL as well!

i keep mine loaded with STINGERS for HD/SD and use CCI Blazers for plinkin'

I think that's just a small Hogue grip; I have one too.

hefedehefe
07-06-2011, 11:05 AM
Yes. It is the hogue jr grip. I recently switch to standard velocity rounds after the slide cracked as u can see in my earlier post pics. It will shoot high velocity, but mine broke after about 5k rounds. I have my black one still out. Hopefilly get it back next week. So I am going to only use standard from now on. I also noticed some of the mags I have gotten had the feeders to high and will not allow the gun to shoot. I thought it was my new gun, but it looks like it was just the mag

what "standard" velocity ammo do u use?

I've had very good luck with Armscor Precision standard vel target in my HP22. Really can't tell any difference in power than bulk hi-speed.

Yep, I ran 1k of hivel thru mine then went to stdvel (Armscor $25/brick) BEFORE any cracks. The warning sign was the wavy appearance of the thin frame material. Thanks to those that posted for the headsup to inspect.
