The WASP is unproven but all accounts from science and overseas firearms manufactures put it above chrome lining...a lot ahead of it in fact. , fine with all the other stuff like the twist and blah blah blah..

not fine with the gas piston part...not fine at all. unless and until replacements parts are a dime a dozen in every gun store I walk into I will never own a firearm system that chains me to a vendor.

better choice I SAY, just my 2 pennies (http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=120046)

after an exhaustive search and research my buddy bought this. Its sitting here waiting for his lower to get outta jail. I opened the package to inspect the upper only. BCG has good solid staking (I am not a guy who cares about that, but I know others do), the upper is fee from scratches, blemishes and any item other than who would expect from a test fired upper. The surface is black.. and I mean BLACK. You don't see this kind of deep coloring on inexpensive uppers. The M4 Fatty handguards are single shielded from what I can tell. I will NOT take anything part or mount this unless the owner is present. The handguards do wobble a bit. My buddy WILL want that fixed and we will do that when we assemble the lower. I feel the handguards are of lower quality and would not keep them on a rifle I was using. I like a solid feel, and these do not give me that feeling. DPMS Glacier Guards or real LMT/Colt M4 Fatty handguards are best. We may look into the Mako 3 rail fatty HGs since Mako has made an effort to post on these forums and clear the air between Mako, FAB and the china made stuff ruining their name.

I have that complete CMMG DI upper on my AR as well, it has given me absolutely no problems at all.

I've had a few different uppers from CMMG and they've performed 100%. I'm not sold on the piston concept. I prefer the proven DI system. They make nice stuff overall.

I have a CMMG AR-22 with a DI WASP barrel and haven't had any issues yet. You're good to go with CMMG.

I have a whole rifle from CMMG. I got the WASP M4 pattern one and it shoots great. Mine is the DI version however. Also WASP is a form of salt bath nitriding and is pretty much the same stuff as Melonite from what I hear, and since Melonite is basically the same stuff as Tenifer that glock uses it should be pretty good stuff.

close and good enough...LOL

just finished researching the heck out of this for a friend. CMMG WASP is the way to go. There is no doubt in my mind. We need other US manufactures doing this. The process will improve as more and more do it.

Chrome lining needs to go away.... its the "fixed carry handle" of the barrel community.

The WASP finish sure does leave the barrel VERY shiny, which makes it looks nice IMO. Also, CMMG has a very nice finish on their rifles, kinda like a glossy black, which is also nice.

I have a CMMG 11.5" Piston upper I was sent for testing. So far it has performed well. Better than usual accuracy, smooth running, so far no evidence of carrier tilt, and the piston does leave the bolt pretty darn clean.

Some changes have been made in the CMMG piston set up. A 1 piece gas plug is on them now which is much easier to remove. It is knurled, has a hole through the side for a rod to remove it and also has a slot for a flat head screw driver in the front.

I also tested the old piston system which had copper rings sealing the gas plug.
I ran it suppressed which I'm sure created more back pressure combined with it being a 7.5" 5.56.
After 300 rounds the copper rings broke up and went into the piston tube, galling it and causing the piston to drag. I'm sure it was also loosing pressure.
Result was short stroking.

I like the piston but as stated, parts are much easier to find for a DI.

the only reason I can see why it shines is due to the shipping oils on it. As soon as that is wiped off it will be matte black...deep black.

look at the pics I posted. the "shiny" spots is shipping oil.

Not that this has anything to do with the topic but....
Fixed carry handles are sweet! Old school baby. It get's so boring hitting the target so easily with uber scopes, red dots and such. Sometimes, not all the time, I enjoy the difficulty of using iron sights, especially the fixed carry handle, somthing nostalgic about it. My .02 anyway. Good info by the way on the wasp, thanks.
