View Full Version : would you build/buy a rifle just because you have hi caps for it?

Here is the scenario.

My buddy has a PPsh parts kit that he picked up back in 95 or so. He hasnt bothered to do anything with it. It included 1 drum mag, and some stick mags (dont recall the capacity, but Im sure they are over 10rds) and Ive been on him to put it together as a featureless rifle (not hard on this one) so he can use the mags as is.

Problem is, he doesn't want to go with an extended barrel and is thinking about hacking the thing up to build as a "pistol"

which then got him egging me on the pick up or build a MP5 type because Ive got a bunch of old MP5 hi caps sitting around.

What do you guys think?

DO IT! That's why I went out and got an AR was because I already had a Pelican rifle case but no rifle to go in it. Also had all the mags for it, grips, bipods, Grip Pods, slings, Surefire, ect..... Sound like a good enough reason to me.

Lots of people bought mags they didn't have a firearm for, to either hang onto for cash(depending on how they guessed the laws would work out, and they didn't work that way for us) or to buy the firearm later on when they could afford it/life permitted/got old enough/etc.

I have extra AK FCG pins. In time they will have their homes in rifles or pistols.

HELL YES!!!! I have a box full of preban AR 30 rounders and I'm going to do a new featureless build just for them !!

That's what started my AR build.

I wanted but wasn't quite ready to buy yet and my buddy gave me 2 AR mags and I ordered my upper a week later. I couldn't help it that dam mag stared at me all month. And that was that.

It's funny because after that he just said your welcome. He knew it would make me finally jump and do it.

And if it's your buddies high caps doesn't that make them transfer over to you which is illegal?? Not going to call the cops or anything lol just want to be sure I'm clear on that.
And I got lost from you talking about your friend having high caps then to you having the high caps. I'm just curious I always thought giving your legal high caps to some one was a transfer and then made u giving and him receiving them making them illegal mags now..

Yes.
I horded all kinds of mags "pre-ban" when I saw the writing on the wall years ago.
Example - never owned an AK clone. Have the mags though.
Bought WASR 10/63's so I could shoot them featureless w/standard cap mags.

When it comes to buying guns, any excuse is a good excuse.

I have a high (standard) cap mag. I need to buy a gun for it.
I somehow acquired a box of ammo. I need to buy a gun for it.
There's an empty spot in my safe. I need to buy a gun for it.

The possibilities are endless but they all point to one thing:

I need to buy a gun for it.

In a freakin heartbeat. I bought an AR a number of years ago because I had a whole ton of Hi-Caps from back in the day that were given to me by a relative pre-ban. Absolutely buy and shoot the crap out of it.

Yes.

There have been AKs made to take PPSH drums, Saiga FCGs and Saiga sporter stocks. Put them all together and that's what I want to build to use my drums.

I'm just not experienced with AK building and have plenty of easier projects lined up ahead of me.

Some day I hope to do it.

Hell I traded an SKS for a pistol just because I had ammo for the pistol. I Traded an SKS for a Russian IZ-70 Mak in .380, had an old box of .380 kicking out in my garage from when I had a Hi-Point .380 dang near 6 years ago when I lived in oklahoma. Got given a Yugo SKS from a buddy, already had one so I traded it with a nother calgunner on here. Best thing I did too, that mak is a sweet shooter and seriouslty making me consider applying for a CCW permit.

Yes, couple of times ......

I definitely bought the 1918 BAR because I had the magazines - I wanted the gun long before I got the mags though. I just bought a Benelli MR1 because I have AR +10 round magazines laying a round for the Volquartsen.

Crap, well I might have to get an Uzi too then.
Or maybe a 9mm AR.

At least I think they are uzi mags... def 9mm though

20-30 rounders, if I didn't particularly care for the gun style? Nahh.

A drum? Is the ammo cheap to shoot?
Hell yes!

But the MP5? You'd have to do the build as a featureless carbine since the pistol variant would have to have a maglock.

Personally, I'd find a way to build a featureless Uzi/Mac clone that accepted the MP5 mags!

Yes, but a Ppsh41 is not an easy build (which is why I don't have one)...

I bought a Camp 9 because I had LCMs for it. Sold it, kept the LCMs, and bought a S&W 910 for them.

LOL on that one! I have ammo that has been given to me over the years by folks that know I have firearms. Most of which I dont even own the gun that fires them....I have a hard time saying no to ammo!

Yes, but a Ppsh41 is not an easy build (which is why I don't have one)...

a none issue, my buddy is pretty talented has access to tons of machinery, and if it comes down to it, he has the right network to help him out.

On my end, yeah a featureless MP5 carbine would kinda suck,,,

I think I only have 3 or 5 of them, and one is def in need of a rebuild.

Definately, I have a whole extra large tupperware box full of high cap mags for guns that I don't own yet (AK, Uzi, MP5, etc.).

Having a whole 30 round mags was the whole reason I built my AR featureless. It was cheaper than buying new mags.

Ya, and bump-firing a 10 rounder is so lame.

OTOH, a Beta-C in a featureless gets expensive really fast if you like to bump-fire :D
