Well I decided that today I'm gonna buy a remy 700 But I'm lost between a sps tactical 308 or a 300 win mag....this will be my first bolt action
I just don't know... I like the 308 cause it's a shorter barrel and I have plenty of 308 ammo cause I own a Socom 2 ..... At the same time I wanna bigger cartridge and I heard a 300 win mag bullet flys straighter than 308.... Never shot a 300 win mag.... But it seems like a 308 but in a magnum version.... Can't quite afford a 338 or
anything bigger but really want to get one in the future but this is a start.... I think I can't go wrong with any but just wanted to kno some calgunners opinion.... This is where I go to get all my answers

What do you want to do with it?

I shoot my .308 almost every weekend. I could prob not afford that if it was 300WM.

Probably just a range gun to shoot at some paper.....But it's nice to know a 300 win mag can take out most of the game out there.... I use to go hunting for boar back in Hawaii but here in oc don't kno where to hunt.. Don't kno anyone who hunts and don't even own a truck.... So I guess ur rite 308 is probably more affordable for a range gun

i wouldn't call 300 winmag an "exotic" round... to me exotic rounds denote extremely limited availability (ultimately leading to reloading or spending buttloads of money on factory ammo when/if available). but that's just me... :)

while the 300 winmag round is expensive you can find it on the shelves at most any gun/sporting goods store.

At what distances do you plan to shoot? .308 is a better round in your situation since ammo costs less, much less recoil, and it'll do well under 1K yards. I'd price out good quality .300 winmag and see if you still want to consider it. Federal GMM 190 SMK is around $50/20rds last time I checked. :D

Yeah, there's a price disparity there. Using Midway's prices as a base. Federal GMM rounds =
308 - $1.75 per round
300WM - $2.60 per round

$.85 difference everytime you squeeze the trigger. but of course like most match ammo, you can reload for much cheaper than that in either caliber.

I'd go with the .308 for the ammo availability and cost.

It really depends on what you're planning on doing with the rifle. If you just want a range gun: go with the .308. With the .308 you can still hunt decent sized game if you choose, and being a NATO caliber, ammo is very plentiful and relatively inexpensive.

308.

The barrel life is a lot longer with a 308 than a 300 win mag.. And the cost is greater..

If your really looking for the better ballistics and are a serious long range shooter go with a 338 or something in that area. Other wise just stick with the 308.

Congrats! Great choice going with the .308, .300winmag is fun but learning on the .308 was the smart move.

300WM is not exotic.

308 for the win, also... most ranges wont let you shoot their metal targets with a 300 win mag. And banging metal @ 500 meters is sooo fun with a 308 :)
