View Full Version : The New And Improved MonsterMan Grip!!!

MonsterMan
11-27-2006, 11:03 AM
2059

Hello everyone. This is the prototype for the new and improved MMG. I have been working on it for that last couple of months. It is longer and wider for a better hold. It is hollow, so it will be lighter. It screws in the same place. It has a MMG logo on both sides. The angle of the grip is a bit more downward for the people who wanted it to protrude a bit more. It was made off of a CAD design for the AR receiver so it fits very well to the receiver. I have tried it on a Stag, CMMG, and Colt and it fits perfectly. I am very excited to release this product. As those who know about the grip already, it is very functional with a ambi-safety. It is easy to reach your mag-release button. It does not allow for a "pistol style grasp".

It will be injection molded so it will be very strong. Just like the A2 grip. I am going to use the money I made off the garage made grips to put into this project. This process is very expensive and I still have to fork over thousands of dollars on top of that.

This post is to kinda gauge whether or not people are still interested in buying them. I don't want to spend all the money and no one buys them. I will be happy if I break even. The whole reason I made these in the first place is to give the detachable mag folks a config to go with. That is why I sold them at a low cost.

I want to keep the cost down to make them affordable, so that means I have to sell more to get my money back. I want to keep them the same price as the garage made ones, $35.00.

Please post comments and interest.

Thanks
MonsterMan

ive been hesitant to purchase one, primarily because my lowers have remained unbuilt. but if those go into production, i'm down for 3!!

those look GREAT!! a huge improvement over the old design.

very professional with smooth lines.

i'm just wondering what the texture is like? are they rubbery? or hard? does the logo cause any interference or irritation?

The logo is set into the grip so it is not noticable while holding it. It will be very similar to the same material and feel as a standard A2 grip. Same texture.

only criticism i can offer is to darken up the color, and match the buttstock. can that be done?

This was the prototype. It is actually gray. I had to photoshop it darker so it kinda looked black for the pic. It should be as black as the standard ar grip.

More square sphincters at the DOJ as they must be s***ting bricks again. ;)

One question: Is that the final color, or will it be more color-matched to the black/darker grey of the AR?

You should make one that can work with a pinned M4 stock....

Like make one that works with an M4 stock in the middle position or something.

A lot of people have M4 stocks...Or better yet, make one that works with the A2 "entry" stock.

This color is not accurate to the final color. This was the prototype and it is actually gray. The final grip will be black like the standard A2 grip.

The process is VERY expensive. So for now, it is going to be this version which is for a A2 stock. The grip doesn't conform to the shape of the A2 stock anymore. It is now just a straight line from the receiver to the tip of the fin. A very little gap can be seen between the grip and stock. I felt it was better to make it just go straight rather than conform to the stock, so people with other stocks would have a better looking top fin. People can "alter" their grip to fit the stock of choice. Whatever stock they go with, it has to be a fixed stock. I wish I could come out with a whole line of grips for lots of rifles and stock types. But this is very expensive to do and I hope to just make my money back after investing in it.

Wow... Those are beautiful. Having not purchased your first version primarily because I didn't like the way they looked. These are much more aesthetically pleasing and look like a natural part of the rifle. It flows so well with the overall design of the AR. If these come into production put me down for one!

The process is VERY expensive.

Believe me, if anyone on here understands the costs of injection molding a new product, it be me :D

I'd be happy with a garage kydex version for an M4 or A2 entry stock...maybe I can modify one?

Anyway thanks for doing the "hard work" keep it up bro!

Coulda sworn this would be third-gen, considering that those smooth-sided ones came before the textured side ones... ;)

But anyway, I'll be buying at least one.

JP, c'mon, you know you can cut this thing down to fit an Entry stock. I did that exact thing on my girlfriend's entry stock.

Although, MM, one thing I would think about is setting up a jig of some sort so that the angled cut can be done consistently with a hacksaw to fit Entry stocks. Then if someone wants to pay you $5 extra to make a cut with a hacksaw to fit his entry stock, that's up to him and it won't take you long since the jig's in place already. I cut down my gf's MM grip for her entry stock, and she's real happy with it.

I didn't think about that...its not steel so I didn't think about cutting or welding it

But seriously...good idea.

Now I just need to find someone willing to trade a pinned CAR stock for an Entry stock ;)

Maybe he'll do a trade-in program for people with existing kydex garage grips???

Then maybe he could re-adopt those grips at a discount to people who want the old style and are cheap and would take a used one for cheap....

Is there any legal problem with making the frontstrap more vertical, like the standard A1 and A2 grips? I forget who it was, but a calguns member showed off pictures of his Kydex grip with built-in push-knife sheath, and the grip was based on the A2 grip.

As long as your thumb can't wrap around it, I don't see what the problem would be.

suggest making a new wooden ak monsterman grip..

That would actually be really easy and cost effective for someone with a CNC machine....

Not to cut into MM's sales but I agree, a wood AK grip would be key.

For now, I think its cool to fill in AK thumbhole w/sheetmetal or expanding hole filler.

Cool. I'm in for one. Have been debating U-15 or MMG but didn't like the looks of the original. N I already have an A2 stock so I'm in.

But speaking of color, my A2 buttstock is more grey than black. I vote for leaving the MMG grip grey so it's the same color as the A2 stock - it'll look more like a single piece then.

If it feels as nice as it looks, and I'm pretty sure it will, then you'd better get ready for a whole lot of business - including mine! I'm using the Sully stock www.SLR15.com with your current MM grip. It is a solid stock with the length of collapsible stock set at the first position for the proper NTCH stance. The bottom angle of the stock is a standard A1/A2 stock and would work absolutely perfectly with your new grip.

I talked to MonsterMan tonight and he is not going to be making anymore of the garage variety MonsterMan Grips that are for sale. I am all sold out of the AR15 MMGs so if you want some more you will have to find them at www.coldwarshooters.com or at Ammo Brothers. Other than that, until January sometime, the MonsterMan AR15 Grip is done.

If there is no list, we will see a new and improved MonsterMan. If there is a list, the MonsterMan Grip will probably be gone forever. Plan accordingly.

I will still probably come out with the grip even if there is a list. There will be new OLL's after 1-1-07 and I want to serve those customers. But Wes is correct that I am not making my garage grip anymore. I think people are going to want to wait for the new better version. The garage version served it's duty. While it's not the prettiest thing out there, it did function the way it's suppose to. I appreciate everyone who bought a MMG and I hope everyone enjoyed them.

I am still in the middle of getting this thing made and it will be most likely January when it is released. The companies I am dealing with are not as fast as I had hoped.

I will update from time to time on how it is going.

Thanks

Why would MM want the old one back when the new ones are going to be the sellers? Sell it in the classifieds to someone who really wants one right now.

Keep it as a momento as these were the first made. I have sold too many to do something like that. I wish I could. I am going to be in so much debt after getting these things made that I ask people to understand and support the bigger cause than worry about the $25 you lost on the first version. Also the new version will be $35. I could charge more but I wanted to keep it affordable.

In the end if I make my money back and the MMG is still going strong, there will be sales and stuff like that. But my main goal now is to pay off the credit cards and get rid of my debt.

I thank all the people who bought the first MMG's. I spent many hours in my garage making them. I even sold them at a low price so people could afford them. To compare, the 'tumor grip' was made out of the same material and it cost like $80 or somewhere around there when it was for sale. I am also allergic to the material that I use to make them out of and I will not miss working with that stuff again. I had many bad rashes on my face and hands after working with this stuff. It is bad stuff.

I am sure people will understand and still buy the new grip. It will be a very nice item to have at a great price. :)

Damnit! I just bought four of the originals! Now I gotta buy four more of these sweet new & improved ones. Oh well, that's how it goes; progress marches on. As a small business owner myself, I know how it is when you are trying to earn a living and provide a decent product at a competetive price, so I won't be a cheapskate and ask for a refund or a trade-in on the old ones. On the other hand, I will offer up the originals that I have at a reasonable price for the penny pinchers out there, as soon as the new ones are out. :)

I'm curious... what exactly would we need in order to have the "definitive MM grip collection"? I've got one or two smooth, non-textured grips and a number of textured ones. Were there any other color or shape variations?

I am also allergic to the material that I use to make them out of and I will not miss working with that stuff again. I had many bad rashes on my face and hands after working with this stuff. It is bad stuff.

Just curious, but when you say bad... is it just the allergy issue? Or is it carcinogenic / toxic if it gets too hot, or something? I'm not complaining, but I am wondering if there's any cases I need to be careful around.

Side note, to anyone trying to sell their MM grips - notice that CWS just posted a bit above that they're all sold out of the old ones. You might talk them into handling a "redistribution" program, but you probably wouldn't get anything compared to putting it in the classifieds.

Trying to hassle MM into actually buying back all his old grips, though... c'mon, guys, that's beyond low.

I have made Coyote Brown colors for people on special request orders. Maybe only 15 to 20 I would guess. I also just came out with grip (black) that was an inch longer. Wes sold out of his just recently and I think Ammo Bros has the last of them right now. So when those are gone, there done.

So a recap of the MMG's life.

1st- Smooth grip with finger grooves on side.

2nd- Smooth with no finger grooves.

3rd- Textured version of the previous smooth grip. (Made in Black and CB)

4th- Inch longer than previous version.

5th- Professional injection molded (not yet released).

The material is not a good material to work with. It is only dangerous when it is in it's liquid state. It's fumes are extremely bad to breath and I have developed an allergy to the material over time from working with it so much. If I get the smallest amount on my skin, a rash develops that makes poison ivy look like a minor skin irritation. It is painful and it lasts for about 2 weeks. I would advise anyone using this material to be very careful and wear the proper safety equipment. I also developed acute asthma from it. I never have had that before. But using this chemical has effected my body to where when I smell the chemical, I get an asthma attack. :( But again it is only bad in it's liquid state. So all the grips are safe. I have friend who use this stuff and mix it with their hands and never have had the allergy. On the other side though, I have had a lot of other friends with the same issues as I have with it. It is on the warning on the MSDS sheets and sure enough that is what I had happen.

So you can see why I don't want to keep making them in the garage. :)

At this point it probably doesn't matter. Get one while you can! If the U-15 is any indication, production hold ups might delay the new grips. I hope MonsterMan can get them out by January, but you never know. Plan accordingly.

There is no 'waiting list'. When they are available, it will be a first come first serve deal. I am getting about 500 made for my first order, so there should be enough for the first wave of buyers (hopefully). I will place my next order when those are almost gone. They will be available in black only for a while. Then I will look into the other colors.

Everyone should be able to get one easy enough. The only thing that you might have to wait on is if 10% or CWS or who ever sells them run out of stock, then you might have to wait for them to get more in from me. But that is it.

I can't wait.

Monster Man,

I was made aware of your grip at the Small Arms Review show in Phoenix on December 1-3.

I manufacture a rilfe which would be legal in California with your grip. Your grip will not make an AR15 Legal in CA but it will make my rifle legal.

I am one of the few who have got the DOJ to approve their rifles. My M96 was approved for sale in CA.

My new XCR should be for the same reasons.

Please contact me to discuss this. My email is alex@robarm.com

A monsterman grip will maybe any OLL legal in CA legal, not just yours. Just because you got a letter from the DOJ it doesn't hold any weight in court. When it boils down to it, it's their opinion and it will be up to the DA to determine. Which I'm am sure is in the letter that you have.

Monsterman, sounds like you're getting to be known. They're starting to here about you out of state now. Congrats!

Rambo6, I'd love to see the XCR available here in California. That said, what makes you think that the MonsterMan grip doesn't make the AR-15 style rifles legal here? The "AR-15 Series" terminology has been struck down in court, leaving only the listed-by-name rifles and the features list as the two mechanisms to define assault rifles in California.

Yep, if ROBAR when through the trouble to get his upper mated with the monster man grip for a letter from the DOJ, why didn't he also just drill a hole in the lower, put a blind pin to fix the mag in the lower and send it to DOJ for an approval letter too. It will be better than the fixed mag Vulcan crap. Someone please put them out of their misery, ROBAR you can do us Californians and the rest of the country a favor. And hell if you made a fixed mag lower for 6.8 SPC and got a letter of approval from DOJ I will buy it. Just something to stick it to Vulcan.

Thanks Monsterman!
Thanks CWS!
